iPhone 7, 3rd party lightning-to-headphone adapter stops working with iOS 10.3

I updated the iOS on my iPhone 7 from 10.2.1 to 10.3 this morning. Since that time, the 3rd party Lightning-to-headphone jack adapter I have - which worked just fine before the update - now eventually stops working with a message that "This accessory is not supported by this iPhone." I might get 5-10 minutes of listening before this happens, and I can only recover by restarting the phone. I suspect that there are tighter controls built into the new iOS that limits which accessories can be used (it would be in Apple's financial benefit to do so, so why not?). Just wanted to see if anyone else has run into this and/or if anyone knows of any workarounds. I have an iPad mini running 10.2.1, and I can use this same adapter without issue indefinitely. So, the iOS update definitely has something to do with this change. Thanks all in advance for your help and attention.

I think I need to buy something else than an iPhone next time! That will solve my problem!

You should certainly buy whichever phone you feel best meets your needs.

Otherwise, options for resolving the issue include:

Buy an MFi-certified adapter for your iPhone.

Use Bluetooth headphones instead of wired headphones.

Hi

When using electronic accessories with your iPhone, Apple advises ensuring that they are either genuine Apple products or that they have been certified as Made for iPhone under the MFi program.

Certified items come with the "Made for iPhone" logo on them and/or on their packaging.

Hmmm, I checked the order from Amazon, and the cable manufacturer claims compatibility with many versions of the iPhone. But I'm not seeing the MFi-specific certification or logo. Guess that would explain it, ultimately. It worked without issue before, just surprised me that it would suddenly stop. But completely understandable. Thanks!!

This move from Apple is not well thought out and will ultimately hurt Apple in my opinion. Do they not realize how many people bought third party Lightning accessories that provide a function that many times Apple doesn't even offer OEM, nor those with MFi certified accessories even provide?

Seems pretty dumb to **** off a bunch of loyal Apple users by deactivating what otherwise worked fine and provided flexibility in functionality.

I used a third-party Lightning to aux analog audio with charging capability in my commute car that worked flawlessly. Now I'm stuck to spend $40 for a Belkin dongle that hardly has stellar reviews, have to use an additional Lightning to analog adapter, and burns another hole in my pocket.

Yep I was very happy using my SMSL m6 dac to listen to music at my office. I was using an inexpensive lightning otg cable. Now after a few seconds I get the device not supported error. This seems like a pretty bad way to treat loyal customers, if ios updates are going to break things we have no choice but not to update our devices leaving them with unpatched security issues.

I have the exact problem. The only difference is I never had the chance to try it in previous versions of iOS. I just received my 3rd party aux-to-lightning. Same problem, listening for a short period, and then the error happens.

In other words, your post helped me identify if it was a hardware problem or software. It's clear now. So what do we do?

I know that Apple will remove this post, but I still have to lodge my protest. Making third party headphone to lighting cable adapters obsolete, penalizes early adopters and loyal customers. The adapters are small and easy to lose. I teach spin classes, so I bought a few to have on hand. Then the 10.3 update made them all obsolete & caused me to have to delay a class. I find it interesting that charging cables still work. This really is a cheap shot from a multi billion dollar company.

The problem here is that it is difficult to find or confirm that it is MFi. I have searched for that specifically and it comes back with many options but very few confirm that they are MFi. The other problem is that often, products are inferior. It seems arbitrary to do this to only lightning to headphone jacks. Why not charging cables, headphones, Bluetooth devices...the list goes on.
