Safari iOS 10.3.1 not clearing Safari cache

Hello,

Firstly, I would like to apologize for my very long absence from these forums. I was a regular and often visited to offer help when I could. My father was very ill then passed away a little over a year ago so I have had a lot to deal with and am still dealing with.

That being said, the reason I am here today is that I have noticed that after the last iOS update (10.3.1) that my Safari cache does not clear completely. I have tried deleting it through settings and through Safari. This is happening on both of my iPads and my iPhone. Is anyone else having this issue? I will report it but wanted to know if this was widespread or something going on with only my devices?

I have tried resetting the devices, turning iCloud off for Safari, setting the date forward, etc, and nothing helps. Not all websites visited remain in my cache, just a select few. I cannot figure out why some clear and some don't.

If someone has a solution they have found please let me know.

Thanks!

Anyway, I hope you all are well!

If you haven't tried it like this, give it a go; it just worked for me three times. Before clearing history within Safari open a new tab; close the "surfed with" tab; then clear Safari history from the "not surfed with" tab.

Clearing from a "surfed with" tab frequently/mostly leaves a Website Data entry for me, even if only for 0 KB from a domain(s).

Hi Bob,

I tried turning off Safari in iCloud for each of my devices. It had no effect. This one has truly got me stumped. I ran Malwarebytes on my iMac (I had great confidence in this program when I was a Windows guru). It found nothing. I have no other issues on my iMac or any of my devices....just that these very few items will not clear from my Safari cache. It is a mystery for sure. Hopefully I can figure it out before it drives my batty lol

I have tried individually deleting the website data entries but they reappear.

My iPad Pro & iPhone only have one entry that refuses to delete 'bell.net' which is a website that I can login to my email with my service provider (Bell Canada). My iPad Pro shows the entry as 68 kb and my iPhone 6S Plus as 64 kb. My iPad Air 2 has 6 entries that will not delete but they all show as 0 kb. They are:

ccn.net (this one I have no idea what it is), denon.com (I was searching for a new Home Theatre earlier in the week), broilkingbbq.com , walmart.ca, costco.ca and bell.net.

My iMac has 3 entries: bell.net, eBay.ca, and initial-website.com (this one I believe is related to a domain that I purchased a year ago through 1 and 1 ).

The only common thread is the bell.net. They are all showing as databases on my iMac.

As I stated, I have no redirects (at least none that are visible) and am not experiencing any performance issues. I make a habit of clearing my browser cache regularly so I noticed this over the past 2 days when it would not clear. I have had issues in the past where I had to delete the entries individually to get them to clear but this time they are not clearing from the list..

When I look at Safari History within the browser (either on my iMac or my other devices) it doesn't show anything so these entries are only visible when viewing through System settings either by selecting Safari->Preferences->Privacy->Manage Website date on my Mac or by selecting Settings->Safari->Advanced->Website Data->Remove All Website Data or slide to the left to delete.

I'm stumped.

I wouldn't worry about it, a lot stumps me.

I wouldn't worry much about the websites not deleting either, but that's just me.

There is a perfectly rational reason for the behavior, darn if we know what it is.

Have you tried making both iTunes and iCloud backups, erasing your iPad , then setting it up as new ? If not don't, too much work.

As much as I hate doing it I'm going to delete my website data. I'll be back.

Do you have those websites listed as "Favorites" anywhere ?

Bob,

Your answer made me smile which says a lot these days lol. Nope, none of the websites are in my favourites.

Back in my Windows days, I would have been on this for as long as it took to figure it out, but alas, I'm old and honestly, there are more important things to worry about.

Ugh, the whole 'setting up as new' is a lot of work. I guess if I start experiencing any real problems I will definitely look at doing that but only as a last resort.

I truly appreciate your help and if you or anyone else finds a solution, please let me know.

I will come back when I can....I miss this place.

THANK YOU!!!!

AAlready tried that. I was alarmed enough about discovering CloudFront on my iPhone that I did a complete reset, and restored it from an older backup. Had to run updates, etc. It didn't change a thing. Still have CloudFront the minute I use Safari and the cache has the half a dozen undeletable items, none of them zero sized. And, I DO notice several performance hits and problems, from Safari locking up entirely, to missing passwords. I am still getting the ten or so phishing emails from "FedEx", etc. No idea if these are related, but I havent experienced this level of problems with Apple ever. It needs mentioning, too, that I just was contacted by CITIBank that my Costco VISA card was used for a charge of just under $800 in California. I don't use that for anything but Costco and Amazon purchases, have limited it to that for years. How would hackers get my credit card number, expiration date? I cannot think of another manner. Something is very wrong and Apple needs to be looking into it.

Experienced/experiencing similar Safari issues in both iOS and macOS, and turned to the ASC discussions for help. Tried a few suggestions for my MacBook Pro, including Empty Caches from Safari's Develop menu, but the web site "databases" persisted. Finally bit the bullet and followed a suggestion to send ALL the contents within ~/Library/Safari/Databases to the Trash Bin yesterday. That immediately cleared those database entries from the MBP, with seemingly no ill effect, after which I emptied the Trash. Within the ASC discussion "Why can't I delete website data in iOS 10.3?", member Drocmirage provided a somewhat convoluted multi-step procedure for deleting persistent website data. That procedure eliminated one of the two entries from my iPad Pro 9.7, but I couldn't get it to work for the other site (microsoftstore.com), so am hoping Apple comes through with a fix in their next iOS, and macOS, updates. Should mention that the persistent data on the Mac vs. iPad were from different web sites (none in common on both machines), even though I share browsing history via iCloud. Also, I had indeed browsed all of those sites within the last several weeks. Other than experiencing the same Safari cache quirkiness a great many of us have, there has been no evidence of mischief on any of our family's five Mac/iOS devices, nor any of our accounts thus far.

I did the same thing with my iPhone - a complete reset, "Erase all content and settings"; the Non-delectable items, CloudFront, all of it, was back within a day. My concern is that my credit card information was stolen and used. I have no idea if this was the cause of i, but since I don't use it for anything but Costco gas and groceries, and Amazon and iTunes store, I'm VERY suspicious And concerned. I filed this as a bug with Apple, and no one has contacted me about it, either.

Apple was working on a hack proof phone, along the lines of the Turing phone and Boeing Black. I want one. I'm sick of hackers.

It's a real pain and my iPhone has the same problem.

If it really bothers you then do what I did, restore the phone back to factory settings and start again. Fortunately I have mac book too so restoring wasn't too much of a problem. At least you'll have a clean machine until the next time you try to clear the cache and find another batch of immovables

Hello,

I'm having the same problem on my iPhone 6 plus (iOS 10.3.1). Safari web data will not delete. Tried the same processes mentioned in this thread but no success. I tried Reset - Reset All Settings, and Reset - Erase All Content and Settings and neither worked. Next was restoring the phone via iTunes and used backup data to restore it. That didn't work either. Costco.com, weather.com, congress.gov are a few that won't delete. Some data won't delete but will reduce to 0 bytes, while others will not delete and they continue to take up space. I've seen a few other threads talking about the same issue. I submitted a feedback form to Apple detailing the problem. Hope they fix it soon. Thanks.
