...that card is notorious for having the wrong markings on its on-board switch (EFI, non-EFI). In recent macOS, it is likely to run in either mode.

On this nearby thread, Johnb-one flipped his switch to the other position and tried again, and the firmware update went right through.

Thanks to some great work from other forum users, I’ve been able to successfully update my Mac Pro 5,1 to High Sierra. I swapped my RX 580 GPU for the stock Radeon HD 5870. After the firmware update (went from MP51.007F.B03 to MP51.0084.B00) the installed ran perfectly.

The funny part about this was that I was in contact with Apple support and they acknowledged that there was a problem but had no idea what it was. I am still waiting to hear back from engineering… I also asked several times what the update firmware version was and never received an answer.

Yep, and I'd loan you mine if you were nearby -- just did the same for a friend here. I am definitely keeping that old card now! (it has saved me more than once, when I had to get into Startup Manager on boot). The good news is that there are sometimes cheap cards out there to be had, hope you can find one! If you don't want to go ATI, the Apple edition of the Nvidia GT120 should also work.

There is a company here that will do an EFI-flash of non-EFI cards, but it's not cheap (and it's in the States) -- you have to mail your card to them, they flash it and send it back: http://www.macvidcards.com

At this writing, only non-Mac-EFI-firmware display card has been proven to be an issue that precludes the firmware update required. No one has implicated memory of other Hardware, then proved/disproved it precludes the firmware update.

When you need a known-good Hardware Item, but your friends don't seem to have one, I always recommend the Genius Bar of your Apple Store, if available.

The potential "problem" is that these Macs are no longer supported, so they may not have any Mac-EFI-firmware cards in stock or "in the back" for testing any more.

Got the ATI 5770 today, installed and turned on High Sierra update.

So far it run thru the update, and now up and running.

Also it's on a OWC 1 TB Mercury Electra 6 SSD.

Many thanks to all for their input, information and help getting this Mac Pro 5,1 Mid 2010 off to High Sierra.

It is supposed to work, the compatibility list states Mac Pro (Mid 2010 or newer) which means 5,1 and 6,1 only but I am having issues installing it. When I downloaded High Sierra on my Mac Pro 5,1 (same EFI and SMC as you) I get a message stating that I must update the firmware first. I've gone through the update procedure multiple times and it always reboots and asks me to update the firmware again.

I've also checked to see if there is a more recent firmware for my Mac Pro from Apple and nothing is posted (MP51.007F.B03 is shown as current). Is anyone else having the same problem, and have you found a way to successfully install High Sierra on a Mac Pro 5,1?

My wife too ! Took too many hours to trail and error (yes error) to get High Sierra on to this machine.

Because the firmware would only take an Apple approved graphics card ?

Then a new Cuda and drivers for the Evga GTX 780 FTW , swapped after update finished.

Another (completely wild-@ss guess) is the your firmware has been hacked and is failing the initial test -- of which this Utility is a part:

I guess I should or might look for Apple Spec card !

For some reason I have now cared for ATI electronics for some years.

Just feel a bit weird about that company !

Then Apple drops the we are now only ATI compatible ?

There is a company Create Pro in the UK that helps older Mac Pro machines get more oomph out.

Got a wire harness kit from them for the GTX 780 I replaced a GTX 680, both from a PC tower.

Waste not, want not.

I went to Montana back in 1982 for 6 months, loved it but the jobs were scarce and few between not enough to keep us though.. DID Meet a lot of really great people, made us feel like we had lived there our whole life.

I was moving after selling our double wide, then moved into a over 55 community ( small townhouse). So I got to recycle a lot of real old SCSI cables and other hardware. Including my 5770 as I thought I'll not need it.

I'm having a issue with the Cuda 9.0.197 update. Keep getting the Update Required window.

This is after I swapped out the ATI 5770, back to my GTX 780 FTW.

Removed the old Cuda, updated Drivers from Nvida then the Cuda 9 update.

Rebooted and still get the error.

The trade press are saying "anything that runs Sierra will run High Sierra when it becomes available."

The Mac Pro 5,1 with 4GB or more is on that list.

You are running 64GB of RAM. Where did you get your DIMMs, and what are their specifications?

I have the same issue. I cannot upgrade to High Sierra. I have tried the firmware update process multiple times and it didn't help.

Not sure what is the next step.
