Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016), macOS Sierra (10.12.5), null

I came upon this thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7995345?page=1) after I too experienced crushing and cracking damage of the logo baffle from something which dropped, unseen, into the “jaws” of the screen-hinging area of my new, 13-inch, 2018 MacBook Air.

Clearly, this is a defect in “materials and workmanship” which subject the MBs to easy accidental damage and, therefore should be covered by the warranty.

  • The material in question is the fragile, glass-like logo baffle which can easily crack and shatter given enough local pressure. Materials with such characteristics should never be used in areas subject to vice-like pressures or, for that matter, normal pressures encountered in screen cleaning. Future designs should mitigate such vice-like mechanics in cover/screen hinging.

  • The workmanship in question is the design of the screen/body hinging, where the space between the screen (and logo baffle ) diminishes as the screen/cover is closed, trapping and crushing anything which has fallen, unnoticed, into the dark, yawning gap, damaging the logo baffle and, possibly, the display screen, too.

As with defective airbags, the manufacturer, i.e., Apple, should be responsible for:

  • Issuing a product warning to all owners of relevant MacBook models regarding this accidental damage vulnerability and measures to take to mitigate such damage*;
  • Developing and offering free replacement of the defective part, one which would not be easily subjected to such damage; and
  • Repairing, at no charge, damaged logo baffles and display screens which have already occurred.

___

*I believe most of us would never have experienced damage if Apple had alerted us to the possibilities of such. We would then have attended to and avoided debris which might easily or otherwise, fall between the cracks with such costly consequences.

Well I don't know what to say, I too have an issue with the screen without any damage I only used it for 3 days and been very gentle to it. However the next morning it was like this. And nothing got in between screen and kbd and no force has been applied to.

I will take it to the apple shop. Let's see what they will charge me for 17 Mac book Pro touch LCD.

I have two Macbook pros and it happened to both of them on the same spot! One is a 13 inch no touchbar and the other is a 15 inch with touchbar! The Gennie was very rude and tried to blame me, he said that I probably placed something inside and broke it. I told him that it was impossible because Im extra careful and it happened to both of my macbook pros and he was very rude saying that it could be a possibility and that he wasn’t gonna keep on going back and forth with me. The only good thing that I can say is that he managed to replaced both screens for free. It is still my worst Apple experience because i know it was quality control and he tried to blame me.

My daughter has just discovered the inside of her Macbook 2015 version is cracked and the pixels destroyed. She says she literally did nothing, just opened it and it was damaged. Being cynical, we assumed she dropped something on it, but you can clearly see the damage is not to the glass, but inside the screen. We’ve ordered her a new one at £1549, plus we’ve taken out Apple Care with accidental damage cover. I’ve just found these posts and realise that she is telling the truth. There are too many instances of the same thing happening for it to be a coincidence. This has left me fearful that the same thing will happen. We’ve bought ours through John Lewis in the UK who have extremely good aftercare, so trust they will do the right thing should this cracking occur. I will also leave feedback on the Apple site. The more people that do, the sooner they will be forced to act. I say ‘forced’ as they never seem willing to do the right thing. But why would they when they can charge extortionate prices for repairs whilst claiming things aren’t covered under guarantee?

That's surprising and sad on the 2015. If I look at my old 2015 given to my spouse next to the 2016, the display appears held together much better from 2015. I just submitted to Apple Feedback that I've had to trade in their product, instead of live in fear, for a 2015. I'm referencing 15" MacBook Pro's in both years. The 2016 was decked out and I'm going to the base model. So sad.

I am so aggravated by this issue. I literally put two pieces of paper stapled together inside my MacBook Pro and when I opened it back up a couple hours later there was a very small hairline crack in the bottom of the MacBook screen. However, this tiny crack has caused the right side of my screen to flicker with different colored vertical lines. The quality and durability of this new MacBook Pro are absolutely terrible. Apple has used extremely cheap and flimsy material with the new MacBook pros. This is a 1400 dollar laptop how can the rim of the screen crack from the pressure of a small staple. Ridiculous. I am never buying an apple product again. I had the old 2012 MacBook pro for almost 5 years and there was not a single crack or dent on that computer. I will not pay 680 dollars for a new screen and I demand that Apple fixes this issue for everyone who experiences this. There is obviously a manufacturing defect (extremely cheap material being used) with these MacBooks. Apple has to cover a small hairline crack under my warranty. I have literally had my laptop for 4 months. I am a broke *** college student I cannot afford to pay 680 dollars everytime this flimsy material decides to crack and ruin my life.

Yes, the display is extremely fragile as a thin (1/8" thick) pad of paper broke my display. I did not see the pad, it was barely inserted in the path of closure (1/4") and the second I felt resistance the screen broke. There was no time to react and I did not close the unit forcefully.

I was actually able to continue using the display for about a month (minus a half inch of the display starting from the lower right corner in both the horizontal and vertical) before the screen simply stopped working altogether.

It's a beautiful, extremely fragile and impractical machine. I bought a new upper for the unit as it's nowhere near time to scrap the system.

having the exact same issue as everyone else. i'm pretty sure either a bobby pin or an envelope is what caused my screen to crack. i'm so careful with this computer and same deal -- i thought perhaps there was a bit of dust on my screen and then realized it was cracked. ugh. this laptop is brand new. i don't even understand how it could break so easily, nor is it clear what could have caused the screen to fracture .. a bobby pin? really?! i can't believe that so many others have experienced this exact same issue. very disappointing. so are these new macbooks just cheap or what? they have to offer a repair program soon, this is a joke.

Hello BobTheFisherman.

If I placed two pieces of paper attached with a staple (my computer science midterm) inside my MacBook Pro and it caused very small hairline crack causing flickering colored vertical lines on the right side of my display, do you think it is worth fighting Apple customer service for a free display replacement? They cannot possibly say this was accidental damage since I had the old Macbook Pro (2012) and I used to put my paper exams in there all the time.

Mar 18, 2018 1:39 AM in response to drtimothy

Ive had the exactly same thing. Small crack at the bottom right hand side, which then creates a small hairline crack 1/3 of the screen. The screen is now totally useless - resulting in my new laptop being useless too. I had my laptop for no more than 2 months brought in Jan 2018. I didn't have AppleCare ( I have buy own insurance) and I was quoted $2100 to replace it from a Mac Store!! Absolutely ridiculous - the quality of this machine was terrible for the investment.

So update on my repair,

I took it to the shop and explained that the was to phisical damage to it or any scratches to indicate any accidental damage. I didn't put anything in between the screen and kbd. They took it in and replaced it for free.

I probably got lucky with it. But I'm afraid to use the laptop. If it cracked for no reason.

If this thread gets more people in then they might start paying attention. But for all of us who donated money for faulty screens is unacceptable.

I wish you ask good luck..

I called customer support a bunch of times and finally, they made an exception and waived repair the crack if I paid $99 for labor, which I did. So, call them, be nice and if someone is not giving you the answer you want then get transfered to someone else. It's what I did and I got a resolution.

Then it happened again to me the crack issue, so now, I'm selling it with a broken display and buying a refurbished one from Apple WITH applecare+. these new ones are so fragile my last macbook pro from 2011 is still going strong and that one I'm not even as careful with. Call them and get them to fix your first one for free.

Also, you next solution: use an external display it's what I did for awhile. Connected it to My tv then it's pretty much a desktop.

call the apple support, be nice and ask to talk to someone else if that person isn't helping you. they replaced my first crack for free (I paid labor, $99). I recomemnd get them to repair it for free (don't back down and call their support till you get that solution). once you get it back sell it to someone else with the fixed screen, then get a refurbished one from Apple AND get AppleCare+

p.s. most credit cards cover your computer/electronics against theft or accidental damages for 120 days after you buy it, that's another option.
