Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

TL:DR -- Apple covered mine without charge. Only because I cited this thread for backup, took photos from start to progressive damage, and was politely insistent. The Apple store staff is probably not your friend. Call in first, and request a Senior Advisor to handle your claim.

If this happens to you, being armed with photos and this thread is your best shot at having it covered.

I opened my MacBook Pro one morning and saw a small spidery line inside the LCD on the lower right near the hinge. I had not dropped it, hadn't moved it from the table in days. Then it spread. Then it got worse. Then a second line began. My speculation: it's a fragile LCD and there was something amiss with the assembly at the hinge putting pressure on the LCD. No physical signs on the outside of the screen.
FWIW, mine is one of the "popping" 2016 MLH42LL/A laptops, right out of the box. Popping Sound, MBP 2016

After seeing this thread, I called Apple to get a case number. The rep said it would be covered, and if the store genius gave me a hard time to ask for a manager. The Apple store experience was the dispiriting time suck I expected: they told me $680 for the repair and told me I had dropped it; then admitted they couldn't find any point of impact; then when pressed to give me their hypothetical scenario, finally speculated that I must have closed it with -- please clutch your pearls here -- a grain of rice I didn't notice. Come on, guys.

Know when you are dealing with unreasonable people. I returned home, called in again, had a long talk with a sympathetic rep who escalated it to a senior advisor. I sent photos while we were on the phone. The SA said they look for a point of impact, and a spiderweb, and there was none. He said he was entering notes in the case to be covered at no charge, but to be aware that the techs might disagree upon exam. Apple overnighted me a box, I overnighted it back, and they replaced the screen and overnighted it back. No charge.

Flawless top notch CS... once you get to the right person.

So -- be informed, be reasonable, be firm, and know to walk away and talk to someone else. I believe that Apple will eventually send out a quality report about the LCDs. They know about this, but they are going to stonewall when they can.

The other thing to note is that early adopters of the MBP touchbar are under the older AppleCare Protection Plan. Apple rolled out AppleCare Protection Plus in June of 2017, which includes 2 incidents of accidental damage. There are no plans to grandfather the earlier MBPs, nor to offer the Plus for a upcharge (which I would happily pay) to bring all of this model under consistent coverage. It's frustrating to be effectively punished for being an early adopter of the new models, where all of the design flaws are showing up with use.

I bought my MacBook Pro 3mths ago hasn’t left the house always careful with it, crack appeared on left hand side near hinge the more we open & close the screen it has become a hole now, took it to apple and declared manufacturing fault was told we must of closed it with something in it and it’s not covered under warranty and cost $700 to fix which I refuse to pay since it cost me $3000. Was told best way to get it fixed was to claim it on our house & contents insurance wow thanks apple so much for customer service not happy

I have the same devastating experience. My MacBook 2018 is brand new, it has this cool Touch Bar, and today, I noticed a stain on the bottom corner, but when I rubbed my finger to wipe it, tiny specks of glass came off! I had to use a scotch tape to take some of these small glass off my finger. BE CAREFUL not to touch it if you notice anything unusual on the MacBook Pro Screen.

Same problem here with a 2017 Macbook Pro 15" from a client. He only cleaned it with a soft cloth, when this small crack appeared. He opted to leave it, but 4 months later his display started to show strange colours. It was sent in for repair but now the repaircenter claims it is because of this crack, that the screen is broken. Replacement will cost €1100 !! while the machine is still under warranty!

I hope Apple takes notice of this already 20 page long topic with numerous examples of way to fragile displays on a very premium product. It would be nice if they could start a special waranty replacement program of some sort, but I'm guessing this won't happen anytime soon.

Let's see what happens. I have pointed the repaircenter to this thread, hoping they can take notice and talk to Apple directly about this serious flaw.

"He only cleaned it with a soft cloth, when this small crack appeared."

Unless you actually witnessed this happening I think your client may have cracked his/her screen another way without his/her knowledge. I have visited multiple retail stores checking out that bar below the screen. I've pressed with force and was unable to get it to crack. It's certainly not as vulnerable as cleaning the screen with a cloth. Usually something like a small pebble gets lodged between the screen and the body and closing the screen causes the crack. It takes a great deal of force. If I wasn't able to crack it then cleaning it with a cloth certainly wouldn't do it.

I had the same thing happen today was using my MacBook before closing the screen and going off to do some things around the house I come back 30 minutes later to find the crack it looked like impact damage but I know it wasn’t there when I closed the laptop nor was anything there to cause it. But there was the tiny crack with bits of the logo panel on the keyboard which makes me to go straight to it’s not something I did if the pieces were still there.

Have been in in contact with support and have an appointment so they can “inspect” the issue. But I brought up that this seems to have happened to many people and got it may possibly be covered under warrenty.

will update with what I get told.

The part that looks broken is an extra decorative bezel. The original part is made of glass. There are some reports of replaced screens featuring a strip of metal instead. That piece is not available separately at this writing.

There are anecdotes of Service Providers covering that area with a thin film of black Vinyl. Users have been unable to decide whether that is any different in form or function from one strip of Electrical Tape.

Figured I'd share my experience as well. I was cleaning my laptop with an electronic wipe and had the same problem. Very gentle pressure and still I hear a crack. A year or so ago I had the corner of the display crack and I didn't even notice when it happened. Another time I had spiderwebs appear on the screen randomly and had to have it fixed. Can't stress enough that I treat my laptop very carefully. Two of times I didn't even see how the damage happened, it just appeared. Very unhappy with how fragile it is. Wish they would help their customers out with this issue.

You're not alone. Had this happen to my 2018 15" MBP w/ Touch Bar yesterday. Opened my backpack, took it out of the case and immediately noticed a tiny crack near the camera, which slowly enlarged diagonally throughout the day. It's only visible when the MacBook is on, and only very faintly visible near the camera when it's off (see pictures below). I have never been more careful with a product than I have with this MacBook. It didn't look like it had any significant point of impact, therefore it was assumed that "particles of dust or dirt must have slid in between the lids", causing this to happen. I bought this for portability reasons. If this can happen at anytime, despite having it in a case inside my backpack, why go through the trouble of paying for the repair? It's disappointing that this can happen so easily to the most expensive laptop money can buy. I called again and asked if there any way I could get a discount on the $680 quoted, being under warranty still and pretty sure this has to be some kind of Manufacturing Defect on their end, but got quickly denied. I hope this issue creates enough attention to reach higher-tier Apple employees that can do something to resolve this problem. It was frustrating having to repeat myself over and over again at the genius bar and then with Advisors and Customer Relations over the phone. I've also never experienced Genius Bar employees getting agitated at customers so quickly, which leads me to believe that this is not an uncommon thing. We're all truly seeking a fair and adequate resolution to this issue. I had my old r MBP 2013 for 5 years and treated it much more roughly and never had anything like this happen. I finally took it for repair 9 months ago after a little liquid damage and even paid extra to repair the Stain Gate issue (it was past the free repair window at the time). I love Apple products, but it's going to be hard to continue using their notebooks if I'm going to get an Anxiety disorder thinking this might happen again at anytime with any type of mild provocation to the unit. Had I dropped it or caused any type of significant impact, I would take responsibility and pay for the repair in a heartbeat. Apple really needs to reach out to their Quality Control team and have this problem looked at a little closer.

Apple has made major changes to the way they do screen repairs. if you had bought a new one in the last few years, you would have been offered AppleCare PLUS.

AppleCare PLUS provides up to two "incidents" with more modest deductibles -- If memory serves me it is something like US$99 for screen break and US$250 for liquid spills or other major trauma.

I have a 3 month old Macbook Pro that I paid €5000 for, it spends 99% of it's life closed, in a Henge Dock. It's had may 50 hours outside of the dock in that time. I have the same crack, right by the MacBook Pro logo. The machine has never been dropped, or knocked. I suppose you're going to say I inflicted that damage are you?

This is clearly an issue with the display design, but in typical Apple fashion, they won't admit it until there is a class action law suit against them for it.

Perhaps you would like to tell us all that the butterfly keyboard problems are also user inflicted?

"I am trying to argue that the screen itself just cracked by itself which can be due to the material being too fragile."

Well that's a non-factual conclusion on your part. You'd have to prove that. So unless it was cracked right out of the box (at that point you'd have to bring to the Apple genius for inspection ASAP) when you present a cracked screen or any physical damage to Apple the repair will be at the financial responsibility of the owner, unless you had AppleCare Plus which covers the repair less the deductible.

" I am willing to pay for the repairs if I dropped it and it is my fault, but I take care of my devices and this crack was caused by normal handling!! "

Since you said it was caused by "normal handling" then the screen did not crack itself like you said earlier. At this point if you're not willing to pay for the repair you could place a piece of electrical tape across the crack to prevent it from spreading.

The screen doesn’t break so easily that all you have you to is touch it. You’re greatly exaggerating. I clean my screens weekly with light to medium pressure with a lightly moistened microfiber cloth which is normal and I have never experienced a crack. At this point ranting here is not going to help. You’ll have to deal with Apple’s cost or repair the screen yourself.

That sounds exactly like my story. I worked on my Macbook Pro (not even 6 months old) during the day, mind you at my desk, without moving it from one place to another. In the evening I closed it and went out to eat. When I came home about 2 hours later to finish my work, I opened it and, as always, carefully in the front indentation, which is intended to be opened. I noticed a small hairline crack in the lower left corner. When I opened it further, the crack pulled into the middle of the monitor. Note the crack inside the monitor. No defect is visible when the device is switched off. The Macbook did not fall down, nor did I hit it, nor did I drop a heavy object on it. I have purchased 3 MacBooks from Apple in the past 10 years and have never had such problems with the monitors. So I was also very surprised when I saw that. I was in the Apple Store, today I made the third call to the Apple Distribution International Service and they showed my photos to a "technician" and he only said "I dropped it or hit it with something". No insight from Apple or at least a specialist who may disassemble the computer to see if tension cracks are really the reason for this problem. Here in the Apple Forum alone, several people have already reported this problem, which I also told the support several times. Answer from support: Yes, I cannot see these cases now. I just said, "You only need 5 minutes to google, just like me. Then you will find several such cases, also in other forums." I am just very sad and disappointed. A computer worth 3,000 euros and it breaks after less than 6 months and nobody really wants to deal with the problem. And the buyer remains at the expense. Real **** and embarrassing for such a big company! I can understand that there are probably a lot of people who try to put forward other reasons, since it is also their own fault for some people. Therefore, I also suggested that the computer be sent directly to the Apple headquarters in order to rule out any production errors. But I hoped in vain, no insight. Customer service looks different in my eyes. And I have already left 20,000 euros as a private person in the company in 10 years. In the Apple Store in Berlin, 2 people looked at the monitor for 30 seconds and told me it was broken. Yes, my grandma can answer that too. I am the cause, for no reason. Only I can have caused the error. I am a producer and DJ and can only say if I had stood on stage with the device and suddenly the monitor jumps and the computer switches off, it would have been a disaster. It is a pity a pity that the Apple Store, Apple Support and Apple Distribution International Service leave me completely in the rain and come up with flimsy arguments. "The computer fell on the right side and therefore has a tear on the left inside of the monitor." And the joke is that the right side of the monitor is completely intact. But anyway, I'm not giving up and will keep complaining ...

Best regards from a "longstanding customer" ... :-(
