Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

I just opened my MacBook pro 13in with TouchBar and noticed a small crack on the side of the bar under the display that says "MacBook Pro".. Nothing I did could have caused. It seemed to have just come out of nowhere..

I didn’t realize until I took my MBP 15.4 with a broken screen to Genius Bar a few days ago that I have only AppleCare protection plan (not AppleCarePlus). AppleCare+ was not available before June 2017 but I bought my computer in Dec 2016 so no Apple Care Plus was available at the time. The Technician informed me that the cost for a screen replacement would be $860 Instead of only $99 had I have an AppleCare plus protection.

This almost $4000 laptop is is now a complete crap with myriads of other problems including short battery life, stuck keyboard, malfunctioning charge port and loud noise ( although these problems can be covered until the AppleCare protection free of charge). I am quite upset because a crack developed on the edge of the screen when I tried to clean dirt on the screen and I know I took very good care of when cleaning it but this less than an inch hairline crack got extended to the entire screen overtime within a day or two. I visited two Apple centers spread over a few days to contest free replacement of the screen based on product fault of their fragile product to no avail. I later contacted AppleCare support phone line (which was recommended by the Genius Bar guys if I want to still explore the possibility of free replacement under warranty) and having spoken to a senior advisor to see if I could upgrade AppleCare to AppleCare Plus through retrograde upgrade it was denied which was an utter disappointment.

I own three iPhones, three iPads, two iWatches, and one MBP, and Apple has just lost their two decade long loyal customer because of this crappy experience with the crappy laptop I ended up buying without realizing it (I believe Samsung makes a far better laptop (which I had before I owned the current MBP))…

Do not buy this product without any means of insurance or accidental damage protection for screen damage, because Apple will not cover it without making you to pay an arm and a leg, but purchase one from another reliable brands like Samsung...

Apple seems not to care about this situation since they have not bothered to reply to any comment in this related to this issue and its been over a month. They need to be held responsible for their bad new MacBook Pro that's every one are having a problem with its fragile screen.

Keep ignoring and will keep posting and venting our frustration on social media until you find a proper solution to protect our investment and loss. You are loosing customers if you take no action and decide to ignore.

This internal glass crack happed with my MBP 13" touchbar too. It's an eggshell glass, and Apple management has decided that since the incidence level is so low (compared to keyboard or battery issues) they better look the other way. What the management does not realize is that every such incidence will lead to one less happy customer, who would be more eager to look at the competition now.

Apple QC is somehow allowing macbook and macbook pro displays with internal cracks to be sent out as final products to the customers. Soon the crack starts growing and after some open/close cycles of the cover, the display fails internally.

We can try our best to make youtube videos, send twitter posts, etc to call the attention of apple management and / or the journos to this problem.

Here is my video depicting this issue.

I also sent a feedback to apple through https://www.apple.com/feedback/

Never received a reply though.

I‘ve found the solution !!

For those of you who cannot seem to get the display replaced without paying $650 to apple, a friend of mine was able to fix it using $30 including fixing charges.

You can find the bottom display glass for less than $20 on eBay and ask someone to replace it for you for around 10 bucks which is miles better than paying $650.

This crack screen also happen to my sister's MacBook Pro 13 inch 2017. At first she tough it caused by accidentlly hit hard object during closing the LCD. The crack spoil the LCD and it must replace.

Apple would not replace the LCD under warranty and she paid $ 600 for new LCD.

I have plan to purchase MacBook Pro 2018 but worry would this issue also happen to this new MacBook Pro.

It happened to MacBook Pro with genuine Touch Bar that I bought in April 2017, However, I received many similar cases from people who bought the same notebook in 2018. Customers who replaced the cracked screen and purchased a new one got a better quality one, proving that apple is confirming that what they have is a fragile and a manufacturing defect

Regardless, this should not be accidental when the screen is $600 worth. I paid $2800 for this one, double the old one, It should be worth the money. They have promoted MacBooks in movies that you can cary it with you everywhere reflecting that is a solid machine. No doubt it is very fragile. What it it slipped from my hand as it happens to most people, then what!

Jul 30, 2018 11:44 PM in response to btarhini

You purposefully placed papers into a place that isn't meant to hold papers (especially with papers). It broke accidentally because you didn't know you weren't supposed to do that. That's epitome of accidental damage. Yeah, you can carry it around everywhere, but nothing anywhere promotes using a MacBook like a manilla folder. If it slips from you hand, that's called accidental damage as well.

This is not purposely because I did not completely closed it.

Since I'm one of many cases that happened to this new MacBook with touch bar, means something is wrong with the quality of the screen. I'm not that ignorant and again I barely closed it. it was more than 5 mm open and I'm just guessing and justifying that it was the staple but who knows. Other people had their screen cracked from just closing it. It could be the keyboard keys that might have cracked it, or it could be just the process of closing it might have cracked the screen. May be they didn't do enough trial on the machine before sending it. Being one of many who faced the same issue with this model means something is wrong with the screen quality.

When I said, it could slip, I referred to the fact that sometimes notebooks slip, specially when you take it back and forth to work, or your backpack might fall, but in most cases, notebooks should not be as fragile to break completely from any small hit, otherwise, it's not worth the investment. I don't; mind spending $800 on a notebook and it breaks. But when you spend a fortune then it should be solid. This notebook is too fragile to be mobile. Apple would have warned people of its condition. I've had my old since 2011 and its still in good condition. This new one was used couple of weeks at home and it broke.

Jul 31, 2018 12:10 AM in response to btarhini

Of course, it's nice when something physically breaks and you can blame it on the build quality, not the person putting stuff into it or dropping it lol. C'mon people, do you all know that this is glass we're talking about? Glass breaks if you drop it, or tap it with something hard, or put pressure on it. This is a normal thing of life the people should realize. It isn't indestructible lol. Take responsibility for breaking your stuff-- its not the computer's fault that you started to close the screen upon something that wasn't supposed to be closed on. It's like the iPhones and Samsung phones crack when people drop them, saying, "They should've made it stronger." --maybe you shouldn't have dropped it, or in this case, you shouldn't have put things into it.

Same with MacBooks. So you drop your computer that comprises of bendable metal and glass-- something that isn't made to be dropped-- yeah, it's probably going to break. Or you can spend the same fortune on a Panasonic Toughbook, something that is military spec and made to be dropped. Chances are that you'll pick the MacBook over the Toughbook because you don't want to be carrying around a large cement brick.Apple does offer AppleCare+ which people should get if they're worried about dropping their laptops. If you didn't get it, it's not that's not their fault. Showing 1000 units out of 4 million units produced doesn't indicate that there's a problem with the laptop, but rather more of a different story.
