Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

TL:DR -- Apple covered mine without charge. Only because I cited this thread for backup, took photos from start to progressive damage, and was politely insistent. The Apple store staff is probably not your friend. Call in first, and request a Senior Advisor to handle your claim.

If this happens to you, being armed with photos and this thread is your best shot at having it covered.

I opened my MacBook Pro one morning and saw a small spidery line inside the LCD on the lower right near the hinge. I had not dropped it, hadn't moved it from the table in days. Then it spread. Then it got worse. Then a second line began. My speculation: it's a fragile LCD and there was something amiss with the assembly at the hinge putting pressure on the LCD. No physical signs on the outside of the screen.
FWIW, mine is one of the "popping" 2016 MLH42LL/A laptops, right out of the box. Popping Sound, MBP 2016

After seeing this thread, I called Apple to get a case number. The rep said it would be covered, and if the store genius gave me a hard time to ask for a manager. The Apple store experience was the dispiriting time suck I expected: they told me $680 for the repair and told me I had dropped it; then admitted they couldn't find any point of impact; then when pressed to give me their hypothetical scenario, finally speculated that I must have closed it with -- please clutch your pearls here -- a grain of rice I didn't notice. Come on, guys.

Know when you are dealing with unreasonable people. I returned home, called in again, had a long talk with a sympathetic rep who escalated it to a senior advisor. I sent photos while we were on the phone. The SA said they look for a point of impact, and a spiderweb, and there was none. He said he was entering notes in the case to be covered at no charge, but to be aware that the techs might disagree upon exam. Apple overnighted me a box, I overnighted it back, and they replaced the screen and overnighted it back. No charge.

Flawless top notch CS... once you get to the right person.

So -- be informed, be reasonable, be firm, and know to walk away and talk to someone else. I believe that Apple will eventually send out a quality report about the LCDs. They know about this, but they are going to stonewall when they can.

The other thing to note is that early adopters of the MBP touchbar are under the older AppleCare Protection Plan. Apple rolled out AppleCare Protection Plus in June of 2017, which includes 2 incidents of accidental damage. There are no plans to grandfather the earlier MBPs, nor to offer the Plus for a upcharge (which I would happily pay) to bring all of this model under consistent coverage. It's frustrating to be effectively punished for being an early adopter of the new models, where all of the design flaws are showing up with use.

I think this is an interesting question because it could explore whether this is a product fault or accidental damage. However, it depends on when the replacement parts were made and if they were identical to the original parts. Given the number of replacements, I would assume that the replacement part has been improved since the launch of the MBP model.

This would explain the reduced number of faults post replacement. In either case, there are situations (anomalies) where it is impossible to determine a future product fault. I think these cases are most likely a product fault, a weakness in a particular section of the screen probably a combination of factors and a difficult combination to test given Apple's rapid cycling of new hardware.

However, despite this likelihood, Apple is unlikely to admit to unknown causation but just may find a clever economic and creative way to satisfy the needs of their loyal consumer base by doing the honest thing?

Wow! I can’t believe this issue seems to have been present since 2017 and Apple are still comfortable charging customers £500-700 for a display assembly repair when it is quite obvious a fault. I have had an M1 MacBook Pro since January 2021, and as I’m working and studying from home, it’s lived on my desk in my home office. I’m extremely careful and meticulous when it comes to my Apple devices as they’re often purchased with years worth of savings. But this downright made me cry. I was sat at my desk completing an assignment, I left the room (just me at my home) and when I came back a few minutes later, the display had cracked internally and vertical lines had appeared. There is simply no explanation as to how this happened but the Genius Bar instantly told me it’s accidental damage and that I probably applied too much pressure when cleaning the screen. I’ve never heard such nonsense. These are devices that are meant to travel and be used in all sorts of scenarios and if cleaning the screen with a soft cloth can smash it, that’s a huge concern. They have quoted near £600 to repair the display. Has anyone had success getting this repaired by Apple or without having to pay out such a high price?

i bought my macbook pro 13” M1 on january 2021. on the 26th april 2021, my screen suddenly have internal cracks (i bet lcd broken), but nothing on the physical screen. the fact that it is brand new, never dropped, no scratches and not a single part of the device dented. all good.

sent it to the mac city and they said the warranty does not covering this! anyone experienced anything like this? saw in reddit few cases like mine.

i swear i took a very good care of my macbook. i don’t believe it is caused by any physical damage because it was in a very good care for the past four months!

can someone advise me how can i get it repaired under warranty?

Me too, cracked screen at the hinge. New Macbook pro with touchbar purchased December 2020. 1st call to Apple support yielded me an appointment with a certified Apple repair facility where I was was quoted $975.00 for a fix. 2nd call to Apple support was directed straight to a senior support technician who was very well versed in rejecting any liability and it was "accidental damage" that caused the crack. A quick google search led me here. Is there a group on a different forum that is working together, because this one person got nowhere.

have the same issue, 3 months old MacBook pro 16'' never dropped or got hit, I carefully used it for 3 months when I discovered an internal crack in the top of the screen near the camera, all screen went black, Apple lab demands 1000$ to replace the screen. this is my third MacBook Pro and it's far behind the first two, the materials are low quality and unfortunately, the Apple products are not as good as they used to be. have the same screen issue with a brand new iPad as well, cracked screed without any physical damage.

Sadly moving to win... don't see any future for a company that does not care about its customers...

The same thing happened to me. A paper clip somehow got in the space between the screen and the keyboard and it cracked the screen. A freaking paper clip! My laptop was literally brand new it was still under warranty and they wouldn’t cover the repair. I am absolutely disgusted! I only had the computer a month i had a protective case and a carrying case and it was destroyed by a freaking paper clip and it wasn’t even a big paper clip 😤

Did you call the manager at the branch or the online store? I could not even get them to take the MAC from me with out agreeing to pay the 700$ charge. The funny thing is they act like these units don't break, but they also try push the Apple extended care like it is going out of fashion, and they claim to know it is a crack screen just by looking at it (which is amazin since they supposedly don't have issues with them cracking).

My macbook pro M1 13inch 2020 is only 2 months old when the bezel cracked on the right side. I am also very careful with my computers, this being my 6th macbook laptop, and the first time I have had any kind of damage, so I am really upset. It hasn't, so far, effected the screen image but I read that it could over time. I took it to the local dealer and they suggested to just tape over it to stop it from cracking more, unless I want to pay for a whole new screen! They didn't want to change the bezel for it is too dangerous to do so. I have been going over and over how it could have happened. Like most people I closed it at night and when I opened in the morning I saw the damage. I keep my laptop as clean as possible. I am now so afraid everytime I open in the morning that I will find more damage. I am keeping it on the desk and not moving it which is really stupid since I buy laptops so I can travel with them and have in the past without any problems. Nothing to do but complain on social media hoping apple will fix this bad design so that others don't face the same situation.

I had this same issue happen to me too. I had just purchased a brand new macbook air 2 months prior and went to open my laptop and found the screen cracked, right underneath the finder icon. Not sure why this is happening, but since so many users are experiencing this issue, I hope apple finds a way to address it. My 2014 macbook pro lasted 7 years. I even dropped it once leading to a dent in the frame, but the screen remained untouched. The old macs were truly a great investment. These new ones seem to not be built as well. Apple says these cracks are being caused by debris. These are $1000 laptops -- a piece of microscopic debris should not be able to crack the screen...

The worst part is that Apple tends to shun loyal customers and make excuses for their products failing. People who can afford to buy these high end computers are being told it’s our fault the screen broke, when we are already extremely cautious using such pricy equipment. They made something so fragile that basic use would cause the machine to be rendered useless, then blame users who have decades of experience with their products! It’s insulting and disrespectful, and customer loyalty will eventually shift to something better. I’ve been defending Apple for years but now I clearly see what people have been warning me about.

We can only hope that enough people will come forward with this issue so that Apple takes notice and decides to step up and sort the situation out.

My "crack" is less than 4 mm long, but was sufficient to kill the whole screen. It took the repair shop forever to figure out the problem because it is invisible. You only see it if you put pressure on the screen. I guess it hasn't spread because of the matte film I use to keep reflection down.

Happened to me twice! The usb c hub I have to use because there are no ports has a firmer cable that the charging cable so when I unplug it it sticks back out rather than laying limp to the side. Didn’t even close the laptop all the way - just barely felt the pressure and lifted to find the tiny crack in the bottom corner which wrecked the display. Too sensitive - horrible design. Never had this problem in 15 years of using MacBooks.
