Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016), macOS Sierra (10.12.5), null

I just opened my MacBook pro 13in with TouchBar and noticed a small crack on the side of the bar under the display that says "MacBook Pro".. Nothing I did could have caused. It seemed to have just come out of nowhere..

Its not just you. I didn't drop it, didn't put anything on it, literally just had it on my desk and opened it up to find cracking.

It seems to be a thing with the 2017- onwards bezels. If its just this section and your screen isn't affected, you could hold it with tape and hope it doesn't put glass into the underlying cables (sadly, mine did). If not willing to risk it, you can actually replace just the bezel, there's some good guides online on ifixit and youtube. Or pay the megabucks and replace whole thing :-(

Apple has made major changes to the way they do screen repairs. if you had bought a new one in the last few years, you would have been offered AppleCare PLUS.

AppleCare PLUS provides up to two "incidents" with more modest deductibles -- If memory serves me it is something like US$99 for screen break and US$250 for liquid spills or other major trauma.

Idk man. There’s 24 pages here of people with the same problem. This happened twice with my own laptop and to this day I have no clue how it happened. It’s extremely frustrating for people who spent money on what’s meant to be the most competitive laptop on the market and later find cracks and dents with absolutely no explanation and are told “it’s your fault”. This is by far the most fragile laptop Apple has put out. For the cost it feels a bit slimy.

I'll happily listen to you explain to me how the screen cracked itself if it wasn't your fault. It certainly wasn't cracked out of the box.

" It sounds ridiculous because it is absolutely ridiculous that a screen would crack this easily without any obvious forceful impact."

No, not at all. That's not what sounds ridiculous. What's ridiculous is the people here who refuse to take any responsibility about the situation in order to get a free repair and saying the screen cracked on it's own, which makes absolutely no sense at all. And that picture above clearly shows the metal was scraped underneath the MacBook Pro name. That's abuse. That's not a result of a screen cracking itself.

So it doesn't sound ridiculous that a screen would crack with no obvious inciting event whatsoever, but it's ridiculous to ask for a free repair without taking responsibility for a situation like that? That's even more ridiculous. Like I said, I wish I could sincerely assume responsibility, but I'm more worried about its fragility being a portable computer and having something similar happen again. I assumed my part of the responsibility and offered to pay half, I just want Apple to assume their part as well.

That's exactly opposite of what I said. You're choosing your own words. I said it's ridiculous that a screen would crack itself and the owner assumes no responsibility, but rather calls it an Apple design flaw in order to get a free repair. And yes, I find it so interesting that people can come here with a crack across the entire screen or a crack at the bottom of the MacBook Pro logo and say they did absolutely nothing to make that happen. I had a 2017 MBP that got replaced by Apple with a 2018 since it was damaged in service for the keyboard repair. I had the 2017 for 18 months and I've had my 2018 since February of this year. I use my MacBooks to run my business so they are in use every single day. Neither one have experienced any screen cracks. If I had I certainly wouldn't pretend I didn't do anything to crack it in order to get a free repair. SMH.

Apple is not 50% at fault for the customer cracking their screen. You are 100% at fault.

Over the years I have purchased 3 MacBook Pro for grandchildren graduating, This recent one, MacBook Pro 2017 just purchased June, has something that looked like fireworks behind the screen. Apple or Apple Care would not cover claiming we put something on top of computer—not true. It cost about $500 to repair. Will never buy another Apple laptop again. They are making crap and won’t take responsibility for it. Appears Apple product is going downstream

" Accidental is when you physically throw or drop or put pressure on the product. In this scenario, the product defectively caused the display to crack. "

Well when you can prove what you're saying as fact, then come back and share it with us, otherwise this is just your guesstimated opinion and nothing more.

Also your cracked picture is showing the metal body damaged too. That's not a result of what this thread is about. Only below the screen has been getting cracked. Your picture is purely physical damage on the fault of the user.
