Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016), macOS Sierra (10.12.5), null

I just opened my MacBook pro 13in with TouchBar and noticed a small crack on the side of the bar under the display that says "MacBook Pro".. Nothing I did could have caused. It seemed to have just come out of nowhere..

Same here. VERY gentle use and last night when I closed my MacBook Pro I heard a crunching sound. I investigated and much to my chagrin there was an actual hole at the bottom of the screen. I found the broken pieces and they are super thin slivers of glass? I cannot imagine what caused this as my laptop was on a smooth surface and I couldn't find anything that could have caused this. VERY disappointed in what I have long since dubbed a Massively Expensive Paperweight! I really hate this MacBook Pro compared to my last one. From the missing DVD slot to the misplaced Siri button and ending with the ridiculous and massive mouse pad. Never once have I been successful in actually zooming in on purpose but several times a day it will spontaneously zoom and I will have to click on view to return to actual size. I hate it so much compared to my other MacBook. It's design flaws are too numerous to list, but putting the Siri button immediately above the delete button is seriously stupid, it's far too easy to touch as I type rapidly by touch. Now I have a screen with a hole in it and lovely electrical tape covering the hole. I would not spend one dime to repair this fragile, cheaply made piece of cr*p. I'm having the same kind of problems with my Pro Max Sadly the days of Apple superiority are GONE. The only thing left that truly is superior is Apple's attitude toward it's dwindling once avid and loyal Apple consumers. There is no way I am paying to repair this inferior piece o' crap.

My screen got cracked and I have no idea how. I simply closed it last night and heard a crunching sound. I opened it and there was broken glass and an actual hole in the bottom of the screen. There is NO WAY this newest MacBook Pro is comparable to my old one. It is extremely fragile and replete with design flaws. Since my previous post was whisked away to Neverland I will not put any more effort into explaining it's many design flaws. I will say that there is no way I will pay to have it repaired. I have covered the hole with electrical tape for now and will be leaving the apple family after 20 + years. I am extremely disappointed that I waited for the new MacBook Pro and have had nothing but problems with it. Compared to my 2012 MacBook Pro, this one is a fragile, flawed and cheaply made joke. From the moment I took it out of the box I have had problems. It was lightweight until I saw how easily it could be scratched and installed a protective shell. Goodbye light weight! So yes I commiserate with other users and the cracked screen issue. I did nothing wrong, of that I am sure, and I resent any poster saying it is user error. Especially since I still can't figure out how my VERY GENTLY used MacBook could have sustained such devastating damage. I have the pieces of glass that fell off and they are beyond micro thin. Sadly no more Apple products for me. I have a very expensive paper weight on my hands now and zero incentive to ever buy another Apple product. If I am ever tempted all I will have to do is look at the electrical tape for a reminder that the product is not worth the hype and heartache.

My sentiments exactly!!! So sad, all my devices are Apple, all linked up and I'm fed up. My 16" super-charged Macbook Pro has never once even left my house (portable, yeah right!!!) and has been nothing but problems. In these days of being completely dependent on this machine for my work, it has added another serious layer of stress. My husband's Macbook (8 years old) works like a charm without a single issue. 6 months new, my pro has been in repair 3 times.

Same here! I have the 2012 MacBook Pro, a new iPad (I use on planes and for travel) a mini iPad, an iPhone Pro Max and an iPhone 7 Plus. They are all linked up and the MacBook Pro with the cracked screen and a myriad of problems is nearly useless. I can't afford to have what is essentially a lemon, repaired. What would be the point? It is so cheaply made I just keep wondering what next? All I did was close it in preparation for bed when I heard that sickening crunch. A HOLE in the screen should be very difficult to create. I did nothing. I searched all around for anything that could have been the culprit but there was literally nothing. The tiny shards of extremely delicate glass or plastic are shockingly fragile. I wish I could attach a photo. Shame on Apple for ignoring loyal customers and passing this newest MacBook Pro off as new and improved. My old 2012 was amazing except for power cord issues. I wanted the new one mainly for the larger screen and less weight. This one? Apple should apologize AND replace with a less flawed version at no cost. IMO.

Hi there, MacBook Pro with Touch Bar 2019 user.

I am an avid Mac user, but that's not to say I'm an Apple sheep, my phone is a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and I'm always the first to criticise Apple when it's needed.

However when it comes to the MBP TB I am here in their defence, it's a lovely device to use, the 2019 version has come with so many repairs, they keyboard (though at first was hard to get used to with the shorter keyboard travel) has with use become a very enjoyable experience, I upgraded from a 2014 iMac HHD to a baseline SSD MBP 2019 and I've found the experience seamless, I have never had the laggy experience I had with my hard drive iMac and despite my laptop being baseline I've always experienced great performance while using Logic Pro X and Final Cut Pro X.

After using the MBP for the last 3 months I've came to a few conclusions, yes it feels pretty fragile at times, dirt can get caught in the hinge and cause the laptop to be creaky when opening it, yes the screen feels pretty fragile and when my brother touched it I cringed.... however I've came to the realisation that this is a £1,500 laptop, meant for professional use, the main use for a MacBook Pro is in the creative sector, so using it as an everyday use laptop is asking for trouble, the laptop is designed to bring a slim and portable form factor to professional users like myself who use this machine for software that simply isn't available on Windows.

For that reason, despite the fact that I would like the laptop to be more durable, I can understand it's drawbacks, especially since I've found performance and portability to be the devices main strengths.

Forgive me but you are meandering off the main reason I posted. Performance is not the issue here. The extremely fragile shell and screen is wholly unacceptable ESPECIALLY at this price point. If a potato chip crumb (don't know what actually caused the hole) can decimate the screen rendering it unusable Apple has built an inferior product. Period.

I used a dust cloth and had a screen protector and an outside cover with a microfiber case for good mesure! I definitely agree that this quality is not worth the cost. My old surface was a tank😂. Since it should luckily be covered under my limited warranty it shouldn’t be too big an issue but I didn’t have any resistance or even hear a crack it must’ve gone through like butter! Best of wishes to you though.

I have treated this MacBook very gingerly from day one when I realized that the actual housing scratched so easily. I used a soft flannel cloth and eyeglass cleaner to clean the screen. I don't know what went wrong or how merely closing it could cause such devastating damage. The hole at the bottom of my screen is 3/4 of an inch at least and exposes some sort of tiny hinge. I covered it with electrical tape as I could think of no other remedy. It is not covered by warranty that I know of. I bought it in 2019 when the new MacBook Pro was released. I cannot take it into an Apple store because of the Pandemic so I fear it is a total loss. My 2012 is pristine! There is not a scratch on it and far superior workmanship. I still miss my glowing Apple! No doubt about it this is a poorly constructed laptop and that includes design flaws as well. I type by touch rapidly and really hate that the delete button is right below the Siri button. Call me very unhappy with this version.

Jun 29, 2020 3:51 PM in response to drtimothy

I know this is an old post, but there seems to way too many people with a very similar issue; it's not accidental damage or "pilot error."

A MAJORITY of these cracks happen near one of the screen hinges. The same hinges that lock at about 45 degrees. While every Apple employee is trained to tell you it's your fault. It's a safe bet it's surface pressure caused by the hinge flexing the screen to a tolerance it can't withstand. And that tolerance isn't much.

Without any sufficient warning that this may occur, IT IS A DESIGN FLAW.

Jun 30, 2020 1:39 AM in response to MFMauceri

Yes, it is mostly definitely a design flaw. Since my original post I've had an addition hole open up on my screen. This one is right over a tiny hinge. I actually saw a bread crumb in the spot where the new hole opened. And before someone criticizes me for having a BREAD CRUMB near my MacBook Pro I have to say I am 90% bedridden due to a heart condition. So yes I saw a bread crumb in the space where the laptop is closed and it caused a second hole. I use a soft makeup brush to clean this area before powering off. Always! But the flaw is responsible and not the user! The glass they used when building this MacBook is much thinner than than the electrical tape I've had to use to keep dust etc. out of the holes. I am so upset about it, it literally brings me to tears. The other glaring flaw in keyboard function is them placing the Siri key right above the delete key. I type rapidly and by touch and accidentally hit the Siri key many times a day. Then I have to stop trying and either close Siri or shout at her to go away! As for Apple standing behind their product, It is outrageous. There is no Apple store in the small town where I live. A military town at that so taking it in isn't even an option. This abomination needs to be replaced. Period. And since it has design flaws I should not have to pay for a replacement. Also I might add the giant mouse pad has a zoom function but no matter how I've tried using internet instructions, not once have I been able to zoom on purpose! Plenty of times I have been typing along and it sudden zooms but never, ever can I get it to intentionally zoom. This MacBook Pro was 3K + and the absolute WORST Apple product I have. My new Pro Max 11 phone is much better. With it I can get the zoom to work ON PURPOSE by swiping upwards on the screen with 2 fingers. This MacBook should be replaced by Apple. I should not be limping by with electrical tape now covering two holes in the screen, both over hinges so fragile I don't have anything to compare it to. Thinner than plastic wrap? Certainly 10X more fragile!

To the "Apple Macintosh Community:"

I'm looking for some informed thoughts on if it's possible that the MacBook Pro (Touch Bar, 2016 - 2019 units) design, can stress the screen's surface in such a way that causes (or accelerates) non direct-impact cracks? Could these screens be "mysteriously" popping and cracking cracking after such a stress? Like, say, the next time the unit powers up or is restarted?

Or is this completely ridiculous and the only way a MBP Touch Bar unit can pop or crack is if something physically strikes or makes contact against the screen?

Jul 1, 2020 12:04 PM in response to drtimothy

No, we as users did nothing wrong. In the case of my device both holes in the extremely fragile glass are directly behind the hinges. This is a definite design flaw, but short of a Class Action Suit, I don't see Apple paying up voluntarily. They are fully aware of this flaw and I am sure they know exactly what is causing the screen to have sudden holes behind the tiny hinges. Unfortunately at this time the electrical tape is my only partial solution. It can't cover the holes and seal them properly so I'm holding my breath not knowing what other problems can befall an unsealed screen.

Jul 1, 2020 12:16 PM in response to Ryanmorrison101

Just because your's remains intact doesn't invalidate the rest of us with identical issues. Cracked screens immediately behind the hinges. In my case I did nothing wrong. It never creaked or showed any signs of stress until that night when I closed it and heard the crunching sound. Now I have identical holes on both sides. Both directly behind the tiny little hinges. Glad your experience has been different but I am wondering why you are on this forum at all? I ended up here by Googling MacBook Pro 2019 cracked screen. I find it a bit odd that you are dismissive of this particular design flaw just because it didn't happen to you?
