Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016), macOS Sierra (10.12.5), null

I just opened my MacBook pro 13in with TouchBar and noticed a small crack on the side of the bar under the display that says "MacBook Pro".. Nothing I did could have caused. It seemed to have just come out of nowhere..

That was a brand new keyboard redesign. That has nothing to do with the screens. Apple has not come out with any new screen design and there's been no known flaws in their screens. ALL companies have flaws in some of their products but you can't equate the keyboard debacle with people cracking their screens here. Like I said earlier unless the screen was damaged right out of the box then it's the customer's responsibility to pay for the repair. These screen cracks are from accidental damage.

My only only question to apple is these internal cracks seems to be common in 2016 2017 models. Others seems to be fine. There seems to be something in it. In my Mac not even a scratch from outside. But there in an internal crack. How could this be possible. My son got a Surface Pro. He has dropped it and his screen is like a spider web, however that unit still works perfectly fine. Mine with a delicate internal crack, where you cannot see a thing from outside. My screen has completely died. These seems to be huge quality difference between the two. If Surface supports Mac OS, I will jump in straight away!!!

Pressure can produce cracks in glass without any direct impact. For example, placing the MacBook in a snug sleeve. Please don't reply saying you didn't put it in a sleeve. I'm only stating an example to address your question...or your rhetoric.

Your answer proves my point. Front glass of MacBook does not serve its purpose. However front glass of the surface pro. Does. Which means MacBook is so fragile to its $4,000 price tag compared to your competition. This is sad. This has been a fantastic product. Looks like it has now gone down the drain!!!

Your response helped me to make my decision. With a heavy heart I have to say goodbye to Mac world. If this is so fragile, I would not spend another $4000 on a MacBook Pro this year

Oops.. I responded and my comment got removed !!! @DPJ you are using a prohibited word in the forum.. I believe.. 🙁

Nevertheless, though I still don’t know how my MacBook got an internal crack. I will stop this discussion here since it is not going anywhere. From this forum I found out that I am not alone. Which means my frustration is reasonable.

thanks for your time DPJ

Well, I would agree with you if this issue would be really rear, but it is not. It is actually doesn't really matters if it's apple or bunch of users fault. It is not a war machine, but I think that every device should be checked for construction reliability. Especially if it is a portable device.

And where was it said that Apple doesn't check their products for construction reliability? By you saying that you're precisely stating that this is Apple's fault.

My 2019 16" MacBook Pro has been nothing but problems. I've been an all Apple product person for 25 years and have never had such a sensitive, problematic machine, from cracked screen, to replaced motherboard, to fan replacement and more. It is 6 months old and has been repaired THREE times. I have babied this device, it has never traveled or been dropped. It is absurd that a "PORTABLE" device should be so fragile. Meanwhile, my husband's 2014 Macbook works like a champ, no problems ever. No question in my mind that both quality and durability have seriously declined.

Well the good thing is you have a warranty for the other issues. Your cracked is your responsibility to be repaired. Unless you have concrete proof that Apple is responsible for your screen damage they will replace your Macbook's screen for the standard repair cost. And I disagree about it being so fragile. I have a 16" MBP since February (and I had a 2018 MBP before that with the same type screen) and I don't have to "lightly touch" the screen to clean it. I clean it normally with the same amount of pressure just like all the other MacBooks, Powerbooks, iMacs and iBooks that I've owned. Never cracked a screen and I've been a Mac user exclusively for the past 25 years as well. Best of luck to you but this is your responsibility.

Not sure why you felt the need to rant towards me? I was posting towards a different member.

DPJ--

In my opinion, you are coming down a bit too strong, and being VERY quick to condemn Users who have cracked displays and similar problems.

A softer, gentler touch would be appropriate. Try to be a bit more empathetic. Some of these folks have suffered what seems to them to be a disaster, and need to talk about it without you (or anyone) immediately condemning them.

Once they can vent and talk about this issue a little, they have a chance to know they are not alone, and an opportunity to not feel so bad. A technical discussion of the options, such as using an external display, may be helpful to some.

"Who is at fault" does not figure strongly into this equation. Whether Apple will fix their display for free or for a fee is a separable issue.

You're right, but there are people here who are posting towards me ranting when I wasn't posting towards them in the first place. I'm not going sit back and allow members to rant in my face without replying. Nobody has a right to rant in someone's face here. If I say something to a member and they reply with frustration that's different. But notice how someone just directly insulted me? Do you see me hurling insults? No.

P.S. and please allow me some credit. I help people here every single day solve their issues. My rep goes up constantly.

May 26, 2020 9:32 AM in response to DPJ

My criticism was deliberately very narrow. If I thought you were doing anything but a great job in general, I would have said so. Your reputation is increasing every day, and you are becoming more and more of an "authority". With that "authority" comes an increasing responsibility to guide users who need not just technical help, but a little general support when they may feel really LOST as well.

You seem to be more outspoken than almost anyone on this cracked-screen issue on a number of different threads. One reason users may be coming back at you hard (in what feels like a rant) is because they are CRUSHED when their beautiful display is in ruins.

I was simply asking for a liitle more empathy on this specific item.

If the crack affects ONLY the bezel, you can:

• pay Apple to replace the entire display

• buy an aftermarket blank bezel on eBay and replace the bezel, or have an independent computer shop do this for you. **

**may impact your WARRANTY, use caution.

• place a strip of Vinyl tape over the bezel area to prevent stray glass from causing more problems as well as "clean up" the look of the bezel. Black Electrical tape would serve this purpose.
