Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

I just opened my MacBook pro 13in with TouchBar and noticed a small crack on the side of the bar under the display that says "MacBook Pro".. Nothing I did could have caused. It seemed to have just come out of nowhere..

yes! I have read an article by technicians who believe that the damage in the lower area of the display appears to be caused by severe stress in the lower area; probably the hinges of the display, during the opening or closing phase of the screen, generate an abnormal pressure in this area which over time risks cracking disastrously.

I think that is it exactly. The hinges are behind both of the holes in my screen. First one popped, for lack of a better word, and then the other on the opposite side. I have blocked both holes carefully with black electrical tape and doubled the tape over the actual holes. I am hoping this will prevent further cracks in my screen. It is most certainly a design flaw. My 2012 MacBook Pro has a much sturdier design and is defect free after 8 years of use. Not a scratch on it.

I have the same MacBook Pro 2019. As I have said before I have two holes in my screen, both in front of the hinges. Teeny tiny hinges. I repaired mine with black electrical tape and reinforced the 2 holes with an extra layer of tape. However that entire bezel with the "MacBook Pro" on it is replaceable. I watched a video where a man was showing how he replaced the bezel. It seems simple to me. The part itself? The Bezel? I have not been able to find anywhere. The closest was a 2017 and I don't know if that will be the right fit. I wish it would fit because I would apply it in a heartbeat. I will keep looking.

I am in a similar situation. I have the 2019 16" Pro. Just the other day I picked it up out of my computer backpack, with my hand grasped in the area where you lift to open it. I heard a slight snap sound. I thought, "wow, thats weird." I opened it to see an internal crack just to the left of the camera at the top. It caused a black line down the middle of the computer, and seconds after, the screen went black. Won't come back now. I called apple, and of course, it's not their fault they made a paper thin screen that cracks by simply picking it up. Nope, thats my fault, becauseI was the idiot that bought the computer. It's $746 to fix (without Applecare). I'm honestly scared to get it fixed because....it will just keep happening. I can't afford to dump $746 out over and over because their screens flex too much. Very disappointed in Apple over this and very disappointed in their warranty. They take no responsibility for their product malfunctions.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. I almost feel lucky that my screen was damaged behind the hinges. I can at least still use it even though my electrical tape is ugly, my screen is still clear.

The most vulnerability seems to be near the bezel and since mine cracked simply by closing it that is where the damage occurred, right behind the hinges. Now each night before closing it I use a cosmetic brush to brush that area to make sure there is nothing, not even a speck of dust, in the bezel area. I wonder when and if Apple is going to make this right for it's users and customers?

This just happened to my laptop too, same spot. Been working from home for the past several months and laptop doesn't move around and didn't fall. Just opened it one morning and little black pieces of the screen to the left of the 'MacBook Pro' fell off. Hasn't affected use of the laptop but it makes me nervous seeing the insides exposed...

Anyone had any luck getting this resolved by apple for less than the $600 noted by other users?

Be professional and businesslike. Your repair should result in a computer that works.

They provided the packaging and they designated the Shipper. If the computer was not right, from the moment you opened the box, they need to make it right or help you make it right. If they blame the shipper, they need to help you file a claim with the shipper.

Your condescending attitude is not helpful. There are literally thousands of us who paid for a new MacBook Pro which has a fatal flaw in the screen. You're not one of them so stop entering the conversation. My MacBook Pro 16 inch screen circa 2019 developed holes in the screen without my doing anything wrong. This story is consistent with so many others. It is a design flaw. Period. We shouldn't have to pay for a new screen that we don't know won't crack again.

If you purchased AppleCare+ for the unit, the replacement fee will be $99. If not, it will be $690+. Apple will tell you it's your fault. It's not... Which is why this thread has 44 pages of similar complaints and 2K+ people have indicated they "have this problem too."

Some Apple boy scouts (they get merit badges!) here reinforce Apple's "policy" in comments that it could not have possibly happened on its own. But it does.

If there is a crack you might want to carefully reinforce it with black electrical tape. I did this because the two holes in my screen were not being protected from other particles getting through to the screen. I have the exact same MBP down to the year. I have had the tape there for going on a year or more. It's working so far. It hasn't gotten worse.
