Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

I came upon this thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7995345?page=1) after I too experienced crushing and cracking damage of the logo baffle from something which dropped, unseen, into the “jaws” of the screen-hinging area of my new, 13-inch, 2018 MacBook Air.

Clearly, this is a defect in “materials and workmanship” which subject the MBs to easy accidental damage and, therefore should be covered by the warranty.

  • The material in question is the fragile, glass-like logo baffle which can easily crack and shatter given enough local pressure. Materials with such characteristics should never be used in areas subject to vice-like pressures or, for that matter, normal pressures encountered in screen cleaning. Future designs should mitigate such vice-like mechanics in cover/screen hinging.

  • The workmanship in question is the design of the screen/body hinging, where the space between the screen (and logo baffle ) diminishes as the screen/cover is closed, trapping and crushing anything which has fallen, unnoticed, into the dark, yawning gap, damaging the logo baffle and, possibly, the display screen, too.

As with defective airbags, the manufacturer, i.e., Apple, should be responsible for:

  • Issuing a product warning to all owners of relevant MacBook models regarding this accidental damage vulnerability and measures to take to mitigate such damage*;
  • Developing and offering free replacement of the defective part, one which would not be easily subjected to such damage; and
  • Repairing, at no charge, damaged logo baffles and display screens which have already occurred.

___

*I believe most of us would never have experienced damage if Apple had alerted us to the possibilities of such. We would then have attended to and avoided debris which might easily or otherwise, fall between the cracks with such costly consequences.

I have had my new MacBook Pro for only a couple months and it has more damage to it than my previous Macbook that I had for 5 years! I'm not sure how the bottom of my screen cracked because I am very cautious with my computer. But, I ended up paying $680 to replace my screen. These new MacBook computers are very delicate! As a student lugging a computer in my backpack everyday, I have learned it is too fragile for this. I would not recommend this computer for students.

I am sure it is a engineering issue and not anything you did. I wasn’t sure the first time because I let my grown son watch a movie, he denied doing anything to it. The second time, 5 days after my repair, I knew it wasn’t something left on the keyboard. Apple needs to step up and admit the computer extremely fragile and pay for the repairs. I hope they fix the issues as I will not purchase another Apple laptop until it is proven it is worth the cost.

I had Apple care that was close to $300 and then had to pay $99 for repair. You are only allowed 2 so if I have this second crack repaired, my warranty will no longer be effective.

I wrote you a long response but Apple removed it and they just emailed me telling me so. haha. They didn't like me telling the truth, I'll try again in a more condense and straight foward anwer

Good news: So, after several hours on the phone with Apple and practically speaking to everyone at Apple except for Tim Cook, they agreed to make a ONE-TIME exception and pay for the screen but I'd have to pay for labor. Apple said I could ship them my Macbook Pro and they'd fix it and I'd just pay $99 for labor before tax. The other option was that I could have MacMedics fix it and Apple would ship them the screen and I'd pay for labor (whatever MacMedics charged). I had MacMedics fix mine, I thought the process would be faster but it a little bit over a week to get back to me (It was over December 2017 Xmas holiday, so maybe that's why). What took the most time was Apple shipping them the screen, I paid $199 for labor since the store was 5 minutes from my house (hindsight I’d have shipped it to apple and only pay $99.

Bad news: as I mentioned in my post, my screen is cracked again and it's been less than a month. My biggest issue was that I wish that someone at Apple OR the MacMedics store would say, "hey, let's find out why your computer cracked, what could have caused it?" Had anyone instructed me to not place ANYTHING in there with the computer close - I'd not be in the same boat. I'd not have been an idiot and stick a piece of paper in there that had ONE staple in it. As mentioned, I've done this to all my windows laptops for YEARS, so I never expected that was the cause. Had I had known I’d not done it. Also, my girlfriend has MacBook from 4 years ago, she sticks entire folders in hers, her laptop takes a beaten but she has never had any crack screens or anything. She laughs at how protective I am of my electronics/computers yes, mine broke by a simple staple and hers has no issues. I’ve seen hers fell off the bed, counter, and survived.

ADVISE: If you were like me and bought AppleCare (because they didn’t sell AppleCare+ at the time) then call Apple Support until you talk to someone about getting it fixed. You should by no means pay out of pocket for the screen for the first repair. It stinks that we didn’t have the opportunity to buy it (if you bought your computer before June 2017). Good luck, take great care of it, don’t stick ANYTHING in between your screen and fight Apple until they pay for your first screen repair.

Same issue, during cleaning with soft paper, the screen cracked at bottom left corner in the macbook pro screen part. And that after 1 week use !!

Tomorrow I will contact Apple, lets see. But it seems the fragility problem will not be solved with a new screen only 😟 😟

I had a macbook pro before this one for more than two years without any issues !

Hey,

I took partial blame. Being a lifelong student, I've done that with my windows computers and never had an issue. Windows computers have a protective/bulkier edge around the screen which prevents anything being stuck between the keyboard and LCD from breaking the screen. They might need to put those warnings on, so idiots like me don't do it. It took me 2 tries to narrow down the problem. As you can see, there are a lot of other people who are experiencing this crack screen issue.

Another crack that is in the same location, that looks exactly like those in pictures posted on this thread and that is completely unexplainable, happened yesterday to my MB Pro 13" no touch bar that i bought 2 months and a half ago.

I've been a Mac owner since 2008 and never had a complaint. I live in Spain so i spoke with Apple care spanish phone service today, got an appointment with an authorised technical service near my place where i've been told very kindly that they couldn't help with warranty because it "looks like an inflicted damage". So i spoke again with Apple care and got scheduled an appointment with technical service at an Apple store next week.

I'll keep you posted about how it evolves.

It would be really shameful if Apple doesn't accept to fix it. I probably wouldn't buy this computer again nor fix it (for 680 euro) knowing that it may happen again as you people are saying in your posts.

I paid 539 euro at the Brussels Apple Store for changing the screen... there should not be such a price difference... Make sure they don't overcharge you

I am thouroughly disgusted... never had such a problem on one of my computers and -seeing all these testimonies- i am shocked that they had the guts to tell me it was not a systemic problem - and that i was pathetic for complaining...

Good luck !

Hello,

Thank you so much for your response. V helpful. Sorry to hear yours has broken again!! I can't believe how fragile it is.

I am going into see them on Monday. I didn't have anything in between the screen, so I'm completely confused as to how it happened. My screen is not affected, it is more the plastic beside the Mac book pro sign.

Its a nuisance, because they will probably say its accidental damage, when there was nothing there for it to be an accident. I don't want to waste my time or theres if there just going to say this. Going to have to fight my corner

I have had the same issue with my daughters computer that she bought in August 2017. Screen cracked by hinges and we took it to the Best Buy where we had purchased. Geek Squad determined it was caused by user negligence, which we argued that it wasn't. They said there was no warranty from Apple and that replacement would cost $1016.30. We approved the repair as it wasn't any good without it. So now the cost for this computer is at $3364. 4 weeks later, the same cracks appear. Called Apple support and after a 45 minute call, they agreed to send a box to ship and they would look into it. 3 days after I shipped it, they returned it to me fixed for no charge. I contacted Best Buy questioning why I paid for it the first time and if there was anyway to prevent this from happening again.

This is the 3rd MacBook our family has owned and I didn't have a single issue with the first two. I am disappointed with this computer so far and I have learned my lesson about Best Buy.

This was the response from the local Geek Squad from Best Buy:

I am sorry to hear about your concern with our repair at Geek Squad. I have taken the liberty to leverage my relationship with apple and have determined why this was covered by apple under no cost to you, for the second repair. When looking into both your service repair from Geek Squad and Apple, Apple classified it as a "repeat service" for their coverage type, which allowed you to not have any cost passed on to you. On 11/9/2017 is when Diagnostics and parts were ordered for your repair through Apple (Geek Squad ordered the parts through Apple based on their diagnostics and VMI). This ad hearse to there Standard Operating Procedures, and all parts were ordered and charges assessed to you based on their Visual Mechanical Inspection. On 12/13/2017, your second repair with apple was covered due to the initial repair by Geek Squad. This was placed in "repeat service" by Apple, so no further charges were passed on to you as the customer. If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach back out to me. Have a great day.
