iPhone alarm is silent randomly

Hi everyone,

Since a few weeks it happens that my alarm clock doesn't come on with sound every time. When I wake up and set it just for checking, it rings again. It happened about 5 times, one time I woke up while it was alerting, but only the screen showed the alarm.

I really depend on this alarm clock but I can not trust it anymore :-( what to do?

I've actually watched the alarm go off but it did not vibrate NOR sound. The thing is, I have set like 5 alarms for the AM. It is weird considering that some alarms actually do sound, but one or two do not.

I've read the suggestions:

Confirmed: Do Not Disturb is NOT on

Confirmed: Not connected to any bluetooth device

Confirmed: Each alarms is set to sound

I think Apple is aware of this issue but because it happens so randomly and has a lot of different occurrences it's pretty hard to troubleshoot.

I think you've summarized it well. I encourage anyone who has this problem to contact Apple Support. The more data they have, the more likely they are to be able to figure it out.

Best of luck.

I have a question for everyone reading this thread. Has anyone actually tried to "Factory Reset" their iPhone ? And if so, did that actually fix this problem? When I contacted Apple Support about the silent alarm bug, that was their final recommended solution to me, but I never did try it out myself. (I use a physical alarm clock, and have been satisfied with that for now.) I think they recommended backing up photos, mail, contacts, etc., before doing the reset, but it was not something that I wanted to deal with at the time I was talking to them.

You can certainly read back through the thread to find out.

Keep in mind that restoring a device to factory state is a diagnostic tool, not necessarily a fix in and of itself. If you restore something to factory state and it works, that's a good indicator that it's something that has been added to the phone that is causing the problem. Then, the task is to figure out what. If it doesn't resolve the problem, it indicates that there may be a hardware issue or that the may be a bug in the operating system.

As far as I know, this bug only affects the X, XR, XS and XS Max models.

Most people in this thread, including the OP, did not mention what phone they had. As the original post dates from before the release of the iPhone X, it's safe to say the OP didn't have one. Of the posts that did mention a model, 15 mentioned the iPhone X, 4 the XS and 1 the XS Max. Twenty-one people, on the other hand mentioned other models, including iPads. Not surprisingly, the number of X family phones increased as the thread got older.

The truth is (as several people noted in this thread) that there have been reports of alarm problems for years. However, as they appear to affect only a very small percentage of phone users, it's challenging to figure out what the causes are. And yes, there is more than one cause.

Ah ok yes. But that when this bug occurs the whole iPhone doesn't make any noise (absotlut still, nothing comes out of the speakers anymore, no sound when playing music or making a call etc.; the whole "soundssystem" is crashed) and has to be restarted only concerns the iPhone X and newer, right? The iPhone 8 has almost the same hardware as the iPhone X.

Hi,

The bug is still not fixed. I’ve had the same issue already 3 times this year so far. It just happened again to me a few minutes ago.

Last time I got late to work because of this. I decided not to trust on iPhone’s default alarm app (clock) anymore, so I downloaded a 3rd party app (Alarmy) expecting that this one wouldn’t fail.

Sadly, for my surprise, today was the first time I had the same issue but on the ‘new’ alarm app I downloaded (already been using this last one for a couple of months)...

Not sure on how to proceed because of this issue anymore...

It’s not the alarm clock that affects it. Iv has this issue a few times and the whole sound goes and you can hear music or make a phone call. You’ll be able to hear some sort of buzzing sound and once you turn your phone off and on it’s back to normal. It’s coming to a year I bought my iPhone XS Max and never had this issue with my iPhone 7 Plus.

People have described multiple problems in this thread. And, as this thread was started before the release of the iPhone X, it's really not about it at all. If you want to discuss what you think is a problem that is unique to the iPhone X, I would suggest you start your own thread. It will make it much more clear what's going on.

This just happened to me with my new iPhone XS max, and happened with my previous iPhone, an iPhone 6 multiple times.

I never could figure out the exact cause, although I did observe it happen and the cause of it on my old phone. My alarm was going off, and before I could reach for the phone to turn it off, a text message came in, and the notification of the text message silenced the alarm although it remained on screen. I assumed it was only if you receive a text or a phone call that would cause this bug, but since that didn’t happen this time, I’m thinking it could be any notification, like the notifications I get that I have a new email.

Edit:

I just performed a test and was able to replicate a scenario where the alarm goes off but is silent yet remains shown on the screen. I set up an alarm to go off on my phone. Immediately once the alarm began sounding on my phone, I called my phone with my wife’s phone, and her call muted my alarm but the alarm remains on screen. I repeated this test multiple times and got the same result. I did some more testing, and found that putting the phone into “do not disturb” mode will not interrupt my alarm. Hopefully this works when receiving texts or other notifications as well.
