Why does the system use more than a half of my storage?

My apps use around 7gb, photos are in iCloud storage, only a few of them are on the phone. And the rest of my storage uses system 8.3 gb. How can it be? Why did I buy the phone with 16gb and got only 8gb of storage for usage?

I also have this problem. I have done everything recommended to optimize space. I have removed most photos. It's the System files that are eating half the space. Somewhere it was recommended to try a backup and restore via iTunes, but I'm unable to complete the restore because it says I don't have enough space on my MacBook. Similarly, on the MacBook, the System files are eating almost 340 gig of my 500. I've cleaned up everything I can think of... Something is not right here. The problem on the MacBook side is bigger and creating more roadblocks to production, but really they seem like the same thing on a different scale. What's up with this, Apple?

You are lucky my phone says it is using 200+gb on system! spoke to apple support they told me to wipe the phone and restore from Itunes back up. Did this wasted 1 day doing it and restored downloaded on apps and data and the phone was fine for 5-6hrs showing 5gb system then over the space of 2hrs the system became 200gb again. Apple support are looking into this but have no idea whats happening they escalated to senior engineers to look at it.

VERY ANNOYING.

They asked me to wipe lots of photos and videos to free up space but clearly this is not a soution as i bought a 256gb iphone x not a 15gb one!! They are looking into this.

Right now Apple is having the biggest crisis of the companies' career. A mysterious virus has made its way onto a staggering number of idevices and is tearing them up like a shark. I have a source high up at Apple who has informed me that the new virus made its way onto iPads and iPhones and iPhones through a two-pronged attack where it was sent through ads and then whoever's phone picked it up would send it to all their contacts immediately. It's spread like a zombie virus. Now every time you delete an app or photographs from your iPhone, iPad, iPod etcetera, the new mysterious "storage" gobbles up the space right away and continues to grow every time you do so, so that you can't download the new update which would correct problem. This will effectively make all Apple products, sold from the mid-2000s up until the virus is eradicated, that have contracted the virus, well only able to use apps that are already on the device. Because once you delete an app hoping to make room for another one, "storage" will eat the space up as it is deleted from the app you no longer wanted. Only Apple products that still have enough space for the new update and do so promptly will update and do so friendly will continue to function normally. There will be a major backlash from this and Apple is not planning on any refunds or rebates.

I have been dealing with this problem for about 7months. I’ve deleted many videos and pictures all unused apps per apple instruction. I have moved everything to apple cloud which has over 40 Gb is storage available my phone is bare bones nothing but mystery data taking up all my storage. I’ve done a hard reset and update through I tunes and that allowed my phone to work normally for a couple days (I was able to check my mail and take a picture with my phone for the first time in months). Woke up looked at my phone and wow I have no storage again, why?

I’m not typically inclined to believe stories like this, but right now it’s seeming fairly accurate. It would explain why over 600 people have this very same problem and Apple has done absolutely nothing to answer questions, almost as if they’re trying to hide something.

I have some very precious work on my iPad. I wish they would at least be honest with us so that we could plan around the immanent crashing of our devices if that’s the case, or just let us know it’s a scheme to make us buy new products.

I’m going to screenshot this comment in case Apple takes it down.

Let’s face it, this is all designed failure installed on our phones through Apple updates. Our storage disappears, our batteries won’t last a day, we can’t delete things off our phones because they mysteriously reappear to name a few. We are supposed to run out and get the newest IPhone to fix it all and the reality is it will be done to us again in another 2 years. This is my last IPhone, I’ll take my chances with someone else, hopefully with more scruples.

Any luck? I’m in the same boat. Never been an iPhone user but my android broke so I tried to join the hype. At this point I hate it!! I have restored and reset my phone about 10 times as per apple support! My phone is using 14.7 for software smh I have even deleted factory apps and no luck!! I can’t even take pics of my kids for safe keeping. Absolutely ridiculous that no one knows why these phones are doing this!!! And not one person from apple has commented. Please help up!

This is clearly the same as The Slowing down 'BY SOFTWARE' of older handsets essentially forcing us to buy new ones. Apple have admitted slowing machines down. If they add some code to make the system unacceptably slow or malfunctioning saying Not Enough Space to download the new OS then people tend to go buy new! We apple, screw you, start being right with people!

I'm currently clearing my iPhone 6 for my dad to use as a secondary device to his iPhone 6s Plus. I've basically logged out of everything and deleted all my data. Did a reinstall in apps I thought he may use to clear data and as I check the storage, I was surprised to see that 'other' has taken almost triple the storage of everything else. I'm currently sitting on 9.2GB used with "System" taking up 6.93GB. That's ridiculous, I'm glad that I chose to upgrade to the Galaxy S9 over a newer iPhone.

Always been an advocate for the iPhone over Android simply because I think when it comes to smartphones, simplicity is key where as where laptops and desktops, more control with Windows is necessary. But I've been ignorant, Apple is playing it customers by giving them so little control. Can't believe all these years I backed them up by using the fact its more 'secure' as an excuse.

I just need the solve this issue to fully be out of the Apple eco-system. Would anyone know if doing a hard reset would clear up anything?

Hello,

I've been having the same problem for a while. I have a 16G iphone 5s and I'm on the 11.4 ios. My "SYSTEM" is using almost half of my storage - 7.5G!

I did what you recommended above (plugging it into itunes and checking the storage) and it shows me the same thing except it doesn't show system files there.

So here is my question - I can't update any of my apps due to not having enough space. I'm NOT paying Apple more money to buy icloud storage when I'm only using 8G of my 16G phone! Can I do a factory reset to get this storage back? I know the operating system has to use some space but 7.5G (1/2) is ridiculous!

Or if the 11.4ios is too heavy for my old 5s, can I revert back to a simpler, less GB ios? And please don't tell me to upgrade my phone.

I’ve seen you’ve sent a response to the problem but I don’t think it’s any bit of a a solution , first things first , iTunes is showing something totally different from what the iPhone is showing . iTunes sometimes shows me that the device is more than 2 gig free even when the iPhone is saying my storage is full. Now let’s get to the “others” file where it’s showing me on the “iPhone” that I have more than half the full storage copacity of the device being used up in . Look guys I don’t care about the name of this file I just need to know what are these “others” files so I can delete them manually from the iPhone , if your saying that they are catched data and that the iPhone automatically deletes them, then it’s not making sense because we wouldn’t have had this problem from the inception if the iPhone was really deleting the cached data , so let’s clear that up and I’ll say from my perspective i don’t really think that this “others” file is any bit of cached data . Because I normally see the device in action when it’s cleaning catched data .e.g you would normally see the apps on the screen getting dark and name of the apps changed to the word “cleaning” so yes I believe that the device does indeed cleans cached data however I don’t think that had ANYTHING to do with this “others” storage file . I feel like its a vírus limiting the phone’s storage capacity . . So far all I can say from my studies of this file is that . When I download an app or when I upgrade to the lates iOS I notice that it always goes up . And when I delete a few apps I see that it goes down slightly . So I’m thinking it’s probably some info about these apps are being stored there or some amount of data from each IOS upgrades in the past are being stored there .. like I said I don’t care about the name of the file I just wanna know what’s inside and where can I manually delete these data because it’s redicous to have a 16gb iPhone that is only giving free access to half its storage capacity , and the worst part is you can’t even store your apps in iCloud and retrieve them in offline mode . To me that’s a big rip off . I really like Apple products and I don’t intend to switch to Android but it seems to me like im running out of options . Please just tell us the solution or tell us what’s the real problem . Because it’s evident that there is a common problem with these devices that you guys don’t know how to resolve but you don’t wanna say it , just be straight with me . Don’t waste my time talking to me like a robot programmed to answer a particular question , and all I get is useless tutorials.

Why does the system use more than a half of my storage?
