Loose USB c port on MacBook Pro 2017

A few days ago I noticed that the two usb c ports on the left side of my MacBook had gotten noticeably looser than the ports on the other side. I don't really plug things into them more than I plug into the other side so I don't think its from overuse. When the MacBook came all four ports were nice and stiff, they all clicked in and felt like they would stay put. But now the two both just kind of slide into the computer and they don't feel like they will stay in securely. Has anybody else had a problem like this with any of their MacBooks or is it possible I got two defective ports on one side of the computer

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, 4 TBT3), macOS Sierra (10.12.6)

This seems to be very common problem. The usb type c connectors in MBP will become loose with time. If you look at connector closer you'll see that the central part ( it has side notches that interact with the latches of external connector) is made of textolite (printed circuit board material) which is too soft to be used this way and it just wears out with time. Ironically, this part in power adapter connector is reinforced with metal on the edges, so it will last much longer. Come on Apple, is it a PRO grade product? In fact, it's being made of materials of a disposable cheapo thing with the "Pro" price. By the way, Macbook 12 which is cheaper and not a "Pro" uses better reinforced connector.

This is very discouraging to read. I just got mine back from Apple TX and they replaced the logic board and IO ports which meant a full restore was needed (on my 2016 model at least) which was easy except some things still don't work like shifting the display to the external monitor. It was under Applecare. So now I have to watch it like a hawk before my Applecare expires. I would be furious to have to pay for this repair! This is ridiculous!

DO NOT "wait for Apple to provide a fix". Unless and until a large number of users present their issues through standard problem-reporting channels, Apple does not know there is a problem, and is NOT working on a fix. Being selfish is the best policy, getting yours fixed helps everyone.

If advice supplied here does not provide resolution, You must take additional steps to resolve your issues. Contact Apple support directly through one of these methods:

• contact telephone support (free for 90 days with a new Mac, of for three years with AppleCare purchase)

• make an appointment at the genius bar at an Apple-owned store for hardware evaluation and advice (free anytime, but after five years parts may no longer be available).

• initiate an Online chat

• Visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider (there may be an "evaluation fee", but if they perform any service for a fee, ask for a rebate of the evaluation fee).

The madness of Apple is that for them the problem does not exist, that component is designed properly, it would be enough to take the same specifications as the charger, which is well done.

Keep in mind, that for the complexity with which this Mac has cost, they change half computer when they open it, I have replaced the logic board (with a wrong ..) and the top case with battery keyboard and touch ID included.

I am very much confused with this. One port (which is usually used for charging) in my Macbook pro is loose compared to the others, however they are still usable. If they are going to replace my port with the same design, I am sure that this will happen after few months. I wish we could inform apple about this and get this fixed in a proper way.

unfortunately it is the same thing that they said to me too, but I pretended that I would change the ports, first thing because on a mac of 3,500 euros, a thing like that does not have to happen, second because I often failed the backup, or I found the mac discharge the next morning, despite having been attacked in recharge.

and as long as I get the Apple care, if it comes back, I'll change it.

Apple, I think, is aware of the problem, but why has not there been a recall campaign yet?

It happens to virtually everyone after 6 months of use, obviously it does not happen to those who do not use the ports, but it is practically impossible, given that every single accessory is connected to those ports.

Just got mine back. The 2016 model had to replace the logi board and ports. Super pain! 3 days later I had 30 ejection improperly messages on the La Cie external when I woke up. Nothing moved all night! My Lightroom catalog was apparently correupted in Time Machine also and now my Lightroom is all messed up. This is more than incovenient! I can’t trust any drive or the MBP!

I have a 2016 MacBook pro 15" with touch bar and I have the same issue. I don't have an apple store anywhere close to me and they didn't have the part at the 5th ave NYC(Went there for a work trip) store and wanted to send it off. This is my primary and only computer for work and home and they have no way of helping me. If they put good ports in the first place this wouldn't be an issue. They need to start replacing peoples laptops or something. My ports disconnect when I barely move the Mac.

My 15" MBP 2017 ports are also coming loose - I got one repaired already now another one is having the same problem - literally can't plug in any disk or charge cable in while on my lap any movement causes disks to eject and charge to stop.

I have contact apple and the reply was no issue here ! This is really not going away and I'm pretty sure Apple are aware of this problem.

It seems that an outer metal sleeve like on the charger plug is the solution.

I had the same problem with my 2017 MacBook Pro 13". I returned it to the Apple store about a month before the warranty expired. They ended up replacing the 4 USB-C ports and the mother board. The new ones are much more solid than the old ones. They felt more like plugging into the charger block. To minimize wear and tear from charging, I purchased an "Apple USB C Charger Power Cable" by Tesha from Amazon. So far this are working fine. In the past I tried other magnetic connectors, but the cables wouldn't handle the charging load. It's unfortunate that apple refused to produce USB-C magnetic adapters. I bought my wife a MacBook Air to avoid these USB-C issues.

Update - after 3 Genius bar visits Apple finally sent my MBP to TX. THey replaced all the ports and the motherboard which meant a complete reinstall. This created a big issue for me with Lightroom because somehow the LR catalog was corrupted on the backup. But so far after a month of trial, the new ports are not creating an issue and I am able to mobilize the MBP and move it around as I expect to. I still have my extrenal Hard drives velcro’d to the lid to minimize risk of a HD falling or moving much, but I am OK with that but it makes for a very heavy peice of gear of lap where I could otherwise distribute the weight a bit more. My MBP was out of warranty but within Applecare, otherwise I am sure they would have charged me and they made of point of tellin me how expensive it would have been and how lukcy I was to have Applecare. This is their design fault and I should feel lucky they fixed it for free? I should have charged them for my time thsi took - all the hours of research I had to do to suggest what the problem was and then document when I was sure I found it thanks to this thread and you kind people! You al made a difference for me. Thanks. Will update again if it goes south.
