AirPods connected but no sound

Hi everyone,

I've had AirPods for about a week and love them, but they're not without glitches...

Recently I went to go for a run. I put the AirPods in my ears, but did not hear a "tone" like I normally do (ear detection?).

Anyway, my iPhone displayed a headset icon at the top of the screen, so I proceeded to play Apple Music, but nothing was played over AirPods. The headset icon disappeared and music was played over iPhone speakers instead.

The headphone icon icon came back, I tried to play to AirPods, but the scenario above repeated - no sound, icon disappeared, music over iPhone speakers.

Has as anyone else experienced this ? I've search (Google) but find no similar issue.

the same thing happened to me literally like fifteen minutes ago. i was pretty worried because a few days ago i left them on the side when i had a bath (they didn’t get wet but i was worried the condensation had done something to them). i searched up what to do and nothing worked: disconnecting my airpods, charging them, turning my bluetooth off and on etc. so decided to just restart my iphone and it worked straight away. i still don’t know why it happened (i’m due an update on my phone so maybe that’s why) but i’m glad i fixed it

I believe you are correct because I have both a Series 1 and Series 2 watch. After the iOS 11.3 my Series 1 watch had Bluetooth problems connecting to my iPhone 7.I had to completely unpair and reset my watch. My Series 1 watch and AirPods worked together perfectly now,but my Series 2 watch with same phone and AirPods stops the AirPods from playing. When I look at the media on the phone it is still playing,I then pause and disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth to AirPods, then they work again.I noticed I don’t get the chime with Series 2 but do with the Series 1.Unpairing the AirPods with my phone did nothing,if fact 10 seconds after I did it the problem returned.

I had the same problem, AirPods connect but no sound comes out. Tried “forgetting” and re-pairing, turning Bluetooth off and on, rebooting phone, nothing worked. Then I unpaired the AirPods, put my Apple Watch into airplane mode and paired the AirPods back to the phone and it worked. I then took the watch out of airplane mode, and the AirPods continue to function.

I have found that if you are using any music service i.e. Pandora,Spotify, Apple Music or anything that allows you to change your output from your Airpods to your phone like Pandora does it makes it so that your Airpods DO NOT SHOW UP ON THE TOP OF YOUR IPHONE!!!!! and when you call someone it wont connect to your airpods.!!! The simple fix is to make sure on whatever you are listening to that you click the little square button on the bottom and make sure the Airpods is selected not your phone I spent like 3 hours figuring this out!!!
