iPhone 7+ home "button" cracked!!

So, earlier this week I went to unlock my phone by using the home sensor and it wouldn't work. A message popped up and said my I'd touch wasn't working and my assistive touch button was on the screen. So I pressed on it to see if it would work (I was hoping guys) and it cracked. Now obviously there is no way I could have pressed down hard enough to crack it. I have never dropped it. I have a case on it that lips over the front in case of a face drop. Lastly, only the home button getting cracked and there being no other physical damage seems a little far fetched for a dropped phone ( which I have never dropped). That all being said I went into apple today to explain and of course they do not cover it and it falls under accidental damage. $169 fee still under limited warranty. I'm not the first person this has happened to. I have read many people's stories about the same thing happening to them after what happend to me. I found it is actually a real thing that happens. Obviously it's a malfunction.. I was really disappointed that I couldn't fix the phone for a cheaper price or get a replacement. Anyone else have this issue?

I went to my closest Genius Bar yesterday. He told me what I said in my original post. That the glass needed to fixed but basically their is no way the button broke under my touch alone (which it did). It is still under limited warranty since I have only had it 7 months. $169. I didn't get offered a replacement only if their were other things wrong that were covered under limited warranty. It wouldn't be a big deal to pay the $169 if I knew I dropped it it was my fault but like I said I didn't drop it. I pushed the home sensor and it cracked.

same thing just happened to mine! my phone was just laying on my bed and when I went to check it the screen was rebooting and my home button cracked and very hot. when it finally got to my home screen I was unable to get into my phone using my home button! I thought I was go crazy that my home button just cracked out of no where but it’s clearly not only me this has happened to! not impressed at all.. It would be understandable if I had dropped it but to have to pay for this out of pocket when it was out of my control is very annoying.

Same thing happened to me on Christmas day. Took a few pictures of my family. Sat my phone on the coffee table to while I picked up a few things in the living room, walked back over and picked it up to start taking some more pictures and had the Touch ID not working error, but noticed right away that the haptics on the home button wasn't working. My phone was in a LifeProof case (had been since the day I bought it) and I could see the cracks through the protective film of the case. Took the phone out of the case and could feel the cracks in the home button. It cracked in a few different directions. After figuring out how to get in to it so I could turn on the 'on screen home button', I noticed it was hot to the touch. Later that day, I also noticed this was causing the battery to drain pretty quick. Had this 7+ for a little over a year so no warranty available. From there I spent the rest of my Christmas day trying to figure out what to do and ended up spending most of the next day driving to different AT&T stores to track down buying a replacement phone. When I found this post a couple of days ago, there were 702 'I have this question too's' and it's at 712 today and most of the descriptions here are the same as what happened to me, so it looks like this is still happening. So... is there a short happening behind the button, heating it up to the point that the glass button cracks while it's sitting there? It's sort of a blindside when you put your phone in a heavy duty case, take great care of it and then it cracks literally from the inside out. :(

Same **** happen to me yesterday. Did not droped it or any damage what so ever. I have a hard case and screen protector. When to open the phone and felt it crack right on my thumb with out pressing hard at all.

This is bullshit, phone is 5 months old. Apple said its physical damage paid $169 to get the whole screen and home button replace. Apple wont just replace the home button, there is much to it than that.

Sounds like another lawsuit coming up for Apple. I feel that Apple knows about this issue.

Same here... I have an IPhone 7... not a plus just the regular IPhone7. This morning I got a message saying my Touch ID wasn’t working so I went to touch my home button and it was cracked... I used it before bed and there was no issue (I never drop my phone... no other physical damage AT ALL) Then I wake up this morning and my $700 phone completely malfunctioned... and I’m not even wasting a drive out to Apple because I already know what they’ll say... and I’m a college student who doesn’t have thousands of dollars in my account... so until I get money to get a phone that’s actually worth $700, I’m depending on assistivetouch...

iPhone 7 Plus, charged up in my car then carried in my pocket with nothing else, 15 mins later pulled phone out and found cracked home button. Thought I was unlucky and had bumped it without knowing but looks like apple has a design fault on there hands, after reading all the responses.

My phone has a military case with screen protector. Now the phone drains the battery and the home button is getting hot. Was quoted $320 for new screen and button, not worth the money. Just using assistive touch for the last 6 weeks.

I think this will be my last apple phone which is a pain because everything I own is apple, disappointing.

Has any one had the home button replaced and confirm if the new buttons are an upgrade?

This exact scenario happened to me. After having it for just 6 weeks, my iPhone 7 was in my pocket on its own. When I went to open the phone but the home button seemed to no longer work and I noticed a small crack on the button (rest of phone totally untouched). A few days later I notice that my brand new phone no longer holds its charge anywhere near as well as it did before this happened, and the broken home button heats up periodically throughout the day - this is usually when the battery drains the quickest.

I went to the flagship London Apple store to get this seen to, having read this and a few other forums I knew that they would assume that I broke the home button myself via some kind of impact, and this is exactly what they said. I highlighted this forum and the fact that over 700 people have had the same issue, but they quickly dismissed as 'just the Apple community' and they said there was nothing they could do - because of the way the crack appeared it must have been down to impact. As for the battery, they ran a test and said it appeared to be working fine, and had nothing to offer about why the button heated up / why the battery is worse now than before - other than I must be just using it a lot. All in all, very disappointing and frustrating as they were essentially saying that I was wrong.

I was offered for it to be repaired at around £160 which I obviously refuse to pay. If this had been my fault, I would either live with it or pay up, but this is clearly a manufacturing flaw that Apple have yet to recognise. As a customer I feel totally powerless as I am stuck in a 2 year contract with a faulty phone.

This is my work phone (iPhone 7) and woke up to the Apple logo flashing on and off. The phone was in my coat pocket on the couch, no drops or nothing. Pull the phone out of coat pocket and see that the home button is cracked and actually has a small collapsed portion. I plugged in my charger to see if the phone was dead (although last time I used it, had plenty of battery). I tried touching the home button and noticed it was quite hot to the touch, so I unplugged it. I then tried the update/restore from iTunes. It downloaded twice and when finished both times, it still has the flashing logo. I've had the phone for 14 months and mainly used it for taking photos at work, sending emails and calls or texts.

Same problem happened with my iphone 7. I was charging it, came back to use my phone and it was turned off. Turned it on again, took long time to boot then a message appears that the home button failed to start . Since then the home button heats and a crack appeared on it. Strange that a company like Apple, wants to loose customers for cheap products they use even though we are paying for a high quality product. Very disappointed. Warranty just ran out and the amount they are asking for is imaginable, 70$ less from a brand new phone. They must be joking!

Had a good win and had my screen and home button replaced under warranty, once my home button was damaged it drained the battery and caused it to get hot.

If your button cracked and got hot while charging contact Apple support and your local Apple repairer and work with them to resolve the issue. If your phone has no other physical damage you should have a good case for warranty.

I am very happy with my outcome, hopefully the home button won't crack again.

Maybe this was the reason with Apple moving away from this home button design?
