Can't play ringtone in iOS 11

Since I'm not a conspiracy theorist and I don't believe Apple did this to sell us new tones, I did decide to get some new ringtones just for the fun of it. I hadn't purchased any new tones in quite some time. I figure I drop $4 - $6 on a Venti Latte at Starbucks without hesitation, so three new tones cost me a whopping $3.87.

Somethings definitely not right about that. Have you rebooted your phone lately? If you have a phone lower than iPhone 7, press and hold BOTH the power and home buttons until the Apple Logo appears then let go and your phone will reboot. For iPhone 7, press Both the HOME and volume down buttons until the Apple Logo appears.

iPhone 6 my custom ringtone has worked fine all they way back to a iPhone 4. Upgrade to iOS 11 nor the upgrade fails to 11.02 fix it. Nice beta test. I have used Apple products since their beginning. Surprised I did not see the system bomb appear! 😁

Yes, I have rebooted many times doing hard reset and shut it down. I have not tried to preview tones until now and it’ll probably let me buy them but want to hear them first and they start out like a preview and stop before it star

That didn’t work for me. I also tried choosing the default, powering off, then choosing a new ringtone, backing up then rebooting my phone again. It’s on the chosen ringtone but still rings to “default “ ringtone 😑 I haven’t updated my software from iOS 11 to the 11.1. Would that fix the problem?

I am having the same issue. Furthermore, I have found that I cannot play any ringtones in the iTunes Store before purchasing them. I can’t be sure if the issues are related, but it is an interesting coincidence.

It's an interesting coincidence, I'd say. We have two iP6 phones. One still played the selected downloaded ringtone after iOS11 and one went to the default ringtone many here are now stuck with. However, even on the phone stuck on the default ringtone, we were able to play ringtone samples.

I'm not sure I'm following you. The ringtone issue started with iOS11. Since then, over the last two weeks, there have been two iOS updates (11.0.1 and 11.0.2), neither of which helped those who are experiencing the ringtone issue.

Discovered something really odd. I tried my wife's iPhone 6 which uses an Apple ringtone, By the Sea, but the phone does not use that one but uses another ringtone that is not the default. I thought this was all about custom ringtones. Weird!

Nope, this isn't just about custom ringtones. Purchased Ringtones on some phones, which are selected in settings, don't play and the tone that plays is the default tone. We have two iP6. One didn't suffer this oddity. One did. On the one that did, we just purchased a new ringtone and it works fine.

I also have the same issue, none of my ringtones work like yours, I have talked to a senior advisor at Apple with no resolution to this problem! Had I known all of these issues I would have never downloaded the ios11

LOL.....we're just users here, so no offense, but knock yourself out and do whatever you choose. If you think Apple's reading this and trembling over the potential loss of a customer over a ringtone, they're not. And of course we all know Android's have zero issues, right?

I tried your method of purchasing another ringtone from the store and setting it as the default. This worked, but only for that ringtone. When I tried switching to one of my other ringtones, it went back to default.

I did try the earlier suggestion of selecting the default, quitting the settings program and restarting. This did not fix anything either...and I have a ton of ringtones. For me this ONLY affected ringtones, my text alerts that were bought worked fine from the get-go... stumped.

Because some purchased ringtones work and other don’t, and mine was a customized ringtone, I suspect the issue may be in the format of the audio file or something along those lines. Nothing else makes sense.

I'm sorry if I gave the impression purchasing one ringtone and selecting it would somehow let all the others work. For most people, they just have a ringtone that isn't default and they were getting upset at having to have their phone ring with the default tone every time. This seems to be the only way to stop the default tone from ringing, but it won't solve the overall larger issue with all your selected ringtones. It's just a simple solution for the primary tone until Apple releases a fix.
