Can't play ringtone in iOS 11

I have an iPhone 6 Plus. After I upgraded today to iOS 11, the phone won't play my personalized ringtones. They are still there and will play when I look at them in Sounds/Ringtone and one of them still shows as the selected ringtone, but when a call comes in, it goes to the default Opening. Any ideas?

Hi there psd31047,

After updating to iOS 11 it seems that your selected custom ringtone isn't sounding, rather the default one is instead. Let's start by selecting the default ringtone. Then quit the Phone and Settings apps:

Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Once that is complete, restart the phone and test it out again:

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities, have a great one!

Apple support has come up with the answer... it the way ringtones were delivered to the phone.. (synched etc) If you purchased the ringtone from the iTunes store , if you go to settings - sounds... above the ringtones there is a "Tone Store" blue link, if there are tones you can re-download which will be downloaded and are delivered to the phone there will be another blue link below that "tone store" link..it will say "download all purchased Tones" .. click it and it will re-download useable ringtones for the new iOS 11... IT seems any ringtones you have made or got outside the iTunes store work fine already...the problem is only with ringtones previously purchased from the iTunes store

These are the actions I first tried - redownloading all the previously purchased ringtones. But that didn’t solve it.

Having backed up and resynced my iPhone a couple of times now, I can change the ringtone from the phone’s default, but only to one of the latest purchases I made from iTunes. The iTunes tones purchased and downloaded prior to iOS11, and now redownloaded, still don’t work. Also individual iTunes tones assigned to individual contacts also still don’t work.

I have had a few gremlins with my contacts since iOS11 which may be the source of the faults with assigned ringtones.

Incidentally, my calendar freezes every time I attempt to create an event on my iPhone. So there are clearly still a few gremlins in the system.

October 26th - updated my iphone SE - same problem - after IOS upgrade will only play default ringtone on main incoming calls - even though ringtones all still there and all still play; talked to apple support who say they are aware of the issue - but no fix; have to wait apparently until they come up with something. Has anyone heard anything new - can't hear the default ringtone the minute I am in a busy area ...!

Ok. I tried it. Now, before the Apple ringtone starts, I get about 2 seconds of my old one.

I bought a Symphony from ITunes many years ago and clipped 30 seconds. I am sure I have been the only person in the world with that ringtone. I loved it. I HATE all the choices I found offered when I thought I would just buy a new tone. Can I make a new one somehow?

Channeling Steve Jobs on this forum is considered very poor taste. And let me remind you that even under his rule, iPhone's weren't immune to issues. Remember Antenna-Gate? That was under his leadership. There were other significant blunders with iPhone that happened when Steve ran Apple. So don't go there now. You can download a new ringtone and be done with this. It's simple. And I bet you spend more at Starbucks than a silly ringtone costs.

I have this same problem. What I figure is this. Under each contact when in "edit" for ringtone it says default. Well the ringtone for iOS has default listed in its name! So whatever apple needs to fix is somewhere in with the "opening" ringtone. The only fix is to edit each contact and select the custom tone you want. If you select any of the stock tones they will work just fine. I think if apple would remove the word (default) from next to the opening ringtone it might fix this.

I joined this group last week as had same problem - with my iphone SE - and apple told me to wait while they fixed it; - tried all the fixes on this thread - nothing worked - today - took one piece of advice someone posted and bought a new ringtone for $1.29( cdn) - and this now works as default - so maybe we just all have to download ( and pay) for a new ringtone - even if old ones seem to be working fine when tested. So try that .

I just contacted Apple support and the rep said he had no knowledge of this as a bug. He said to Reset all Settings which I won’t do without some indication that it will work. I can select/unselect my custom ringtone and play it but only the default ringtone sounds when someone calls. I’ve tried deleting and restoring the ringtone file in iTunes and syncing but no dice. iOs 11 caused this.
