Can't play ringtone in iOS 11

I have an iPhone 6 Plus. After I upgraded today to iOS 11, the phone won't play my personalized ringtones. They are still there and will play when I look at them in Sounds/Ringtone and one of them still shows as the selected ringtone, but when a call comes in, it goes to the default Opening. Any ideas?

Hi there psd31047,

After updating to iOS 11 it seems that your selected custom ringtone isn't sounding, rather the default one is instead. Let's start by selecting the default ringtone. Then quit the Phone and Settings apps:

Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Once that is complete, restart the phone and test it out again:

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities, have a great one!

LOL....I'm sure the engineer appreciates your support. But I truly doubt this was a money making venture from Apple. I suspect it's more the format of the tones, and going from 32 bit to 64 bit architecture that is causing some (not all) downloaded and purchased tones to not play well with iOS 11. But I do agree with you that spending $1.29 to put this behind me was the best solution for my needs. I figure I spend more just about everyday at Starbucks on coffee.

Merry Ho Ho to everyone.

Well that's ridiculous advice sarah_s1. Sounds like you used to work for Microsoft. Do you people just spout out this answer so we'll quit bothering you? Is it so hard to read a post, admit you don't know, and forward it on? You people used to tell me to reinstall when my phone would have issues after EVERY update. Now you get caught slowing down phones and say you 'meant to do it'. Shameful.

Sarah-

Has there been a fix to the ringtone issue since this discussion in September?

I'm having the same difficulty. I've had custom ringtones for years, and the upgrade to version 10 or 11 caused them to not play any more. They are still listed in iTunes, are still on iPhone 7 as the default, and they play when I click on them. But, it defaults to the Opening tone for every caller, including the ones I have these ringtones assigned to.

I tried your solutions above with no success. Thanks for your help.

Hi, I have an iPhone 5s and have just installed iso 11.2.1. Before installing, I had contacts with their own personalised ringtone. Since installing the new iso, I have had to reassign personalised ringtones to my contacts but when they call, the ringtone defaults to the standard default opening tone provided by Apple. The personalised ringtones will play when I select them from the sounds menu but won’t play when the contact calls me.

I have sync’d with iTunes, downloaded the ringtone several times, restarted my phone several times and reassigned ringtones. Nothing is working.

Please can someone from Apple sort this. I never wanted to install iso 11.2.1 as I heard there were a number of glitches with this software but I was forced to due to compatability with other apps.

Come on Apple sort it please. Based on recent reports it feels like you’re losing your way.... This would never have happened under Steve Jobs.

Then I ultimately helped you. I just like you lost ringtones in the upgrade to iOS 11. I hope you’ll use that link and contact Apple UK. The more who let Apple know through the right channels, the more likely something will be done to resolve this.

My believe, btw is the ringtones didn’t convert to 64 bit architecture in the upgrade, making them non-usable in iOS 11. But that’s just my guess. Apple never discusses issues publicly, which frustrates people

There is another option, use GarageBand. It means creating your own loops, but as long as you have the music on your device this is doable.

You can also save the sound email or message it to someone else and as long as they have GarageBand they can install the ringtone too. (Search YouTube for how to make a ringtone using GarageBand)
