ios 11 update phone freezing

Hi, I updated to ios 11 on my 64GB iPhone 6s without any issues. But since doing so my phone has stopped working 3 times. The problem is that the phone freezes and I can't press any apps or open app switcher, it's just dead. I have to do a force restart to get back up running again.

iPhone 6s, iOS 11

Connect the phone to iTunes, back it up, then restore iOS using iTunes.

Stivatchssn, I am uncertain of your particular circumstances, but I can assure you what you are reading about other people’s ongoing issues is true. You sir must be a lucky Apple customer.

Personally iOS 11.1 has made what was a bad situation with the earlier releases now almost untenable. The lock ups are much more frequent and now often with a black unresponsive screen.

What really distresses me is that I do not get a sense that Apple is applying any significant resources to address the issues covered here. None of the recent updates have any discussion of most of the matters raised in this forum, and they haven’t rectified many of them.

I have been a loyal Apple customer for many years but I can honestly say this is the worst system upgrade I have ever experienced and for the first time ever I am seriously considering moving to Android to gain some stability with my smart devices. I would not have this thought if I was convinced that Apple acknowledged there were issues and were openly working with affected customers to speedily address the problems.

I guess if enough people walk away from the platform there will be a change in approach.

I’ve not had an issue since updating to 11.1. But, as someone mentioned, there is absolutely no reliable way to trigger the behaviour. It appears to be completely random.

As for a permanent solution, I’ve not found anything. My phone has never been repaired, and there has never been an issue with it until 11.0.3 when they stared poking around with “screen fixes”

I’m hopeful they resolved the issue with 11.1 though it doesn’t explicitly mention anything about screen fixes.

Hear hear. The lucky few who have not experienced this. My husband has had no issues and as mentioned in previous reply threads, since it’s impossible to predict what triggers this, it’s impossible to stop doing whatever it is that causes it or talk to tech support about it.

I firmly believe whatever was changed in iOS 11.0.3 is the cause. I never had a day’s trouble with any of my iPhones up until then.

Same here on my iPhone 6S:

- Apps freeze and then crash 80% of the time when opening or switching to them

- Huge memory leaks when trying to open the apps causes battery to drain quickly
- Cannot hear people who call me 50% of the time

- Sometimes when the phone freezes it goes to a black screen that I cannot come out of, even the off button doesn't work. After 5mins it becomes responsive again.

- iTunes controls from lock screen usually don't work, break sometime after restarting phone

- Many notifications just come through as a vibration, nothing on screen. Occasionally they appear for a moment and then disappear

EXACTLY the same issues happen on my bros phone, he BOUGHT A NEW PHONE because he thought it was broken. And the SAME issues happen there too......... How are more people not reporting this?

I am a software dev and this is just shameful that such a buggy OS could be released, which only needed to support a couple of handfuls of hardware variations :/

I certainly wouldn't update yet. I was on 10.3.3, and updated last week, now experiencing the same issues in this post. I was muted on a conf call for work, and needed to talk, but my phone was completely unresponsive. The screen was dark and wouldn't respond to any buttons. I tried to power the phone off, still no response. After 3-4 minutes, my phone screen lights up with 911on the screen as if I needed to make an emergency call. My conf call was disconnected as well. Stay on 10.3.3 for now if you heavily rely on your phone.

I had a ton of issues with 11.03, upgraded to 11.1 last Friday. While I no longer get the black screen with the spinning circle, I still have apps freeze up constantly requiring a hard restart.

I’ve done fresh installs, manually downloaded apps instead of using my backup at the request of the apple genius, and still have issues.

The phone seems to have a hard time multitasking with this o.s.; if I’m typing or browsing and an alert comes in, that’s when it locks up most often.

Shame since this 7 isn’t even a year old and was flawless prior to 11

I have isolated my freezing issue when I manually update apps. 100% of the time when I update apps, the update finishes, but the icons have grey areas around them as though the update is not complete. The phone is then essentially frozen and a hard boot is required. Once I reboot the updates are finished and the phone seems to be ok until the next update.

This is how I fixed all my issues - freezing, crashing, black screen, unable to be heard on calls etc

- Tried to downgrade to 10.3.3, this kind of worked but all my downloaded apps had a missing-icon icon and didn't open. I tried to fix this and rebooted 2x. On second boot the phone wouldn't turn on - stuck on apple logo.

- Went into recovery mode with USB plugged in. iTunes informed me I needed to "update to 10.2.x". Tried updating, said something like "declined to update this image on this device"

- Updated iTunes from 12.5 to 12.7 and made 1 last attempt to recover phone. This time it prompted to update to 11.1. It worked! Booted up but I still had to manually delete all the missing apps and re-install from Store.

Since doing that I haven't had any issues (so far anyway). Everything is running smoothly now without the massive mem leaks 👌

tl;dr if Factory Reset does the same thing then try that. Otherwise go into DFU mode and do it through iTunes. Another user said he tried this but it started to go wrong again, so only more time will tell but looks good so far.
