ios 11 update phone freezing

Hi, I updated to ios 11 on my 64GB iPhone 6s without any issues. But since doing so my phone has stopped working 3 times. The problem is that the phone freezes and I can't press any apps or open app switcher, it's just dead. I have to do a force restart to get back up running again.

Exact same issue... Wasn't immediate after update, just started a day or two ago. I've had to hard reset 3-4 times now. Several otherwise reliable apps open very slow or more often crash without opening

Agreed. I updated last evening and my phone worked fine for about 5 minutes. I don’t know if Apple reads these forums but I assume that they do. I cannot understand why they have not seen to address what appears to be a very widespread issue. I have a 6 Plus. I skipped the 7 because I knew that whatever the 10th anniversary phone was on the way. Now they’re saying that most folks won’t be able to get their hands on an X until at least February or March. I’m not interested in the 8. I have had iPhones since the 5. I have endured very slightly buggy updates, but never one that essentially bricked my phone. I don’t pay much attention to Android world, so I don’t know if they have the same issues, but unless Apple straightens this out tout de suite, I’m going to start looking into Android as painful as that might be. They have phones more roughly on par with the X...

Re: If you've tried everything and it still doesn't work

Firstly, it appears we are the unfortunate segment. I've been warning all my iphone users not to upgrade but it appears many have already upgraded but don't experience this freeze problem.

Thanks for all the brilliant suggestions. I tried the various ideas ...

1. @ToxRowlang's idea to Reset Location settings back to original. It worked for 3 hours, then slowly degraded over 24-48 hours back to horrible freeze.

2. Later I tried @JesperDenmark idea which is to delete Tinder. I don't have Tinder - but I deleted all third party apps (anything that Apple did not provide as part of basic phone) - and reinstalled only if needed. Phone is 50% better but still occasionally lagging and freezing but at least not indefinitely or not as frequent.

3. I had enough and tried to downgrade to 10.3.3. At first I hit error 4000 (so I updated iTunes, turn off firewall & virus protect). Then I hit error 3194 (which means Apple doesn't allow downgrade ie 10.3.3 is no longer signed off the firmware).

4. I have tried @tushar_mehta's ideas of messing with selected Settings but didn't really help.

My current conclusion and options:

a) Wait for Apple to really fix it with a working iOS

b) when I have time, I'll hack away error 3194 to downgrade to 10.3.3 and stay there.

c) change phone to X, or more likely Samsung S8 or Note 8. I like Apple a lot & I understand technical blunders happen but this lack of accountability (quiet, no acknowledgement, etc) from them really frustrates me.

Will also keep trying your hacks guys. Thx.

Count me in. I have a 64GB iphone 7 and also experience the freezes people have been reporting (running ios 11.0.3). Apart from the freezes, I also have other issues with ios 11 :

- sometimes, I would initiate or receive calls ans not be able to hear or speak to the other person on the line (a reset would solve this but still, you can imagine the user experience of this)...

- listeing to music using a BT headset on a non Apple Music app (ie Deezer which is basically a Spotify competitor), commands sent using the headset would not be "routed" to the streaming app but interpreted by the iphone as meant for the default music app (eg, hitting play/pause while listening to a particular song would launch a song on the Apple music app). Also, the BT headset icon in the top menu bar would sometimes into show up there.

As a last resort before reinstalling my iphone as a new device, I have just disabled most of my "always on" location authorizations in the system settings as I've read in this thread that it might help... Will keep you posted.

Apple please fix this mess !! I had no such serious issues with ios 10

Thank you for the tips here...Well I have SE, 7 and an 8 now in the family all are totally smooth and back to normal, one of my 8 which had an issue was replaced under warranty by APPLE. Overall I see keeping in low battery mode helps as well...may be all additional settings are off in this mode. Also I had MEASUREKIT AR APP saw the issues as soon as I installed...However since new device I had a genius appointment they confirmed defective piece and replaced my unit. Now all well!! Am not going to try any new OS until some stability there...will stay in 11.0.2 for now no issues

iphone 6s user.After updating to iOS11

Mine is freezing every 5 mins. Apps, touch screen .Phone blacks out .

At time call doesnt show and will see voicemail straight, after reboot it works.

Update to iOS11 w/o taking backup. Now there is no way to downgrade to iOS10 w/o loosing data .

Apple please let us know the way to downgrade to iOS10 w/o data loss.

iOS11 is just UNUSABLE and FRUSTRATING .

Whats the point of havin 1000 featurs when basic functionality: Phone call is broke ???

Hi! I have an iPhone 7+ with 11.0.3 software and even just when it had the 11.0.0 version it would freeze on me that i would have to turn it off to make it work again.

This time though with 11.0.3 the message icon would gray out (attached image) and I won’t be able to do anything to have it respond. I locked it and left it alone for 3-5mins but after unlocking it, it was in its same unresponsive-message-icon-grayed-out state. The one thing to do was force restart it.

Never ever ever had this issue before with my past iphones and that is why I love the iPhone because it never freezes like Android phones. Apple, fix please and ASAP.

I have the same problem (iphone 6s Plus) The phone just freezes, I touch the screen and nothing happens, not even the physical buttons. The only thing it allows me to do is the hard reset. Sometimes I have to do it 2/3 times a day. Thought I should just do a clean install, clean all settings and install as a new phone... two hours after this the phone just shut off suddenly by itself. I’ve never changed the screen, let alone non official hardware. What the ****... just plain annoying

Oct 17, 2017 2:53 AM in response to andyk105

11.1 do not have these issues, I tested it for a while now, also like I said in one of the previous answers this problem is not reproducible for more than a week in my 6s and 8 with 11.0.2 I haven't moved to 11.0.3. All so smooth absolutely whatsoever...Apple is doing some magic here. Only thing am following keeping always in low battery mode..location services off!

I've never downloaded Tinder to any of my phones. It started as soon as I'd installed 11 on my 6s. I upgraded to a 7plus and it still happens! The freezing has become less frequent. My guess is that as apps update they may be fixing bugs carried over from ios 10 that were causing it. An apple eng told me to reset and install as new. That just lost a load of my data and didn't fix it. Let's just hope 11.1 works

Oct 17, 2017 8:47 PM in response to andyk105

Mine too. It's severe. I the screen will not respond over 70% of the time. I have to hold Home and the Screen Toggle and reset it over a dozen times a day. I cannot take calls as the screen is non responsive. I have wiped the phone clean and reset back to zero and it still freezes up. It is driving me nuts. I do not have a recovery past a week old so I can't restore back to a prior OS. This has to be related to functionality to support the I8 and X.
