After upgrading to IOS 11, i started to have this exact problem with my iphone 6s in the first minute after upgrade, it only gets normal after restart but after a while it starts to not work again. Sound not going, not coming all calls are completely silent. İ never had this problem until upgrading to IOS 11.

And seing this is also happening to others, its probably a IOS11 6s issue.

This happened again today.

Last night I had to hard reset my iPhone, because I needed to make some phone calls (it sounds hilarious just like that)

I was able to make all my 3 or 4 calls.

This morning I could not connect phone calls again. So, it works for just few hours apparently.

It started with 11.0.0 and I thought it would be fixed with the first update, but the issue persists after 3 updates.

I'm not sure whether Apple do not know how to fix it, or they simply ignore the issue considering it low priority.

ps. I've also tried to disable 4G, but it did not work.

After updating to iOS 11 I stopped being able to hear phone calls and caller couldn't hear me. Described it as sounding robotic before going completely silent. Took to Apple Store and the "genius" ran diagnostics and confirmed it was a software issue but could not provide a solution other than to scrap a perfectly good phone and pay for a new one. Apple should be embarrassed they have phones that don't make phone calls because of their own software. This will be my last Apple product for sure!

This sounds plausible. The problem is that I no longer find the WLAN (Wi-Fi Calls) setting. Could the problem be related to a change of carrier? My new carrier may not support, but it was with my old carrier. If the phone detected that the service is no longer available it may have disabled the menu inside the settings, but forgot to disable the service itself. Meaning it is trying to use it even if it isn't supported by the carrier/network. Still not sure, though. Since I'm not sure I were connected to Wi-Fi some of the times.

Fingers crossed – but this issue hasn't happened with me again for a bit (it used to be twice daily +). May've been an inadvertent fix via 11.0.3 upgrade, but wonder also if there was a clash with another app – such as WhatsApp, that can use audio for calls too? And this may've upgraded in the meantime. Famous last words of course... 🙂

Exact same issue on my iPhone 6s on iOS 11.1 (I have latest beta version installed too)

Calls connect fine but then at random intervals during the call the line goes completely silent on my end. I believe the other person can still hear me. After about 6-10 second, the sound comes back.

This is not a fault with the earpiece. The same happens on speaker.

Restarting the phone fixes the issue for a couple of days then it comes back.

I read on another post about this same problem that if they turned off AirDrop and then did a hard reset it fixed the problem. I have now done it and will wait and see if this fixes it. I normally use AirDrop to transfer photos to my Mac, but I'll live without it if this fixes this problem. AirDrop settings can be found under Settings > General > AirDrop. Set to Receiving Off. Do a hard reset.

Yep, having the same issue with iPhone 6s with iOS 11.0.3. During the regular call via the Phone app, I don't hear anything and a person doesn't hear me. Connecting AirPods and trying to call again doesn't help, still no sound on both sides, and after turning iPhone off and on again the problem is temporarily solved, but it comes back again after a while, and calls via other apps like Skype or Viber are working fine, so it's not a hardware issue and it affects only the native Apple Phone app. And I have never faced it before updating to iOS 11.

I have had this problem with my iPhone SE. Plus apps crashing and pretty much the phone just freezing up all the time. Causing me to have to do a hard reset. Which fixed the problem momentarily, then it started messing up again.

However it seemed stopped for about a month. Started all this again 2 days ago. I think I have it traced to a clash with the Tinder App (Feel freed to judge on that ha).

But after I deleted it off my phone, that's when all the issues stopped. Downloaded it again Monday (Still ok to judge ha) and it's been acting weird ever since.

Woke up right before my alarm this morning and noticed that the sound didn't play with the alarm. It just vibrated. Deleted the Tinder app, and the next alarm played like normal.

Will continue to see how it acts today.

So I'd say a possible solution would be to check any apps that might be clashing with the update.

I think my phone finally works. Been at this for a month. Terrible call on Monday almost cost me my job. Apple, this is infuriating. Everyone else, try this:

Turn off phone noise cancellation (settings, general, accessibility, phone noise cancellation)

Turn off cellular voice 4G (settings, cellular, cellular data options, enable LTE, data only)

Turn off WiFi calling (settings, cellular, WiFi calling)

Reset network settings (settings, general, reset, reset network settings)

Network settings may restart phone. After that, reset again by holding Home and power button until after screen goes black and you see the Apple logo.

Good luck!

If you look on the Voice Memo interface - top right, there's an audio icon. If you press this, the playback (on the phone) is more audible...

Funny, I just tried this out earlier, and the crash happened again. There were some non Apple app's open in the background that froze up the machine too. Needed to soft-reset. Thinking the culprit could be among them (WhatsApp for example).

And the audio issue is actually this: earpiece speaker and mic become disabled by the bug – so you can't be heard during a call, or hear the caller. The speaker still works as sounds (and the phone ringing) aren't affected.

It can't be a hardware issue (phone killed by iOS 11 update) as a re-boot (or soft-reset) resolves this – albeit temprarily.

It seems to have fixed itself by updating the applewatch last night. that is the only thing that has happened between it not working yesterday and it working today. But I was same, made phone calls through the car handsfree, on speaker, on mic itself, in coming and out going calls no sound, not even the ringing noise when calling out. fingers crossed it doesnt happen again.
