After upgrading to IOS 11, i started to have this exact problem with my iphone 6s in the first minute after upgrade, it only gets normal after restart but after a while it starts to not work again. Sound not going, not coming all calls are completely silent. İ never had this problem until upgrading to IOS 11.

And seing this is also happening to others, its probably a IOS11 6s issue.

I’ve tried some of the solutions suggested here and even reset my iPhone after the temporary fixed failed with random crackling or nonexisting sound reappearing. Now, after 30 reboots or so, the phone doesn’t pick up my requests. I hit numbers I want to call and I have a 15 second lag before the call is placed. 4 out of 5 times I have no sound, except from speaker mode, and after talking a minute that fails too. I don’t see how this could be a hardware problem because the phone has worked without any glitches whatsoever previous to the OS update and there isn’t even a slight possibility I damaged it.

Mine seems to be working OK now, not great but OK. I have gone through the network provider and need to use the wifi calling where possible. But my service provider is not as good as it is suppose to be, so getting out of contract. is it possible the new update requires a higher level of signal for calls now? is the new software slightly too advanced for the older models (even the iphone 7 and se)? just throwing ideas out there I am unable to answer these questions and am certainly not saying these are the issues. is this happening with the newest model aswell? but the top corners of the SE are not very responsive in the touch screen anyway, so not getting another SE.

I also have this problem. iPhone 6 that worked fine on iOS 10. Moved to iOS 11 and the phone audio issues immediately showed up along with a whole bunch of other performance, stability, and battery life issues. Upgraded to 11.1 and the performance and stability issues improved (still not as fast as 10, but usable). However, the phone call audio problem persists. Upgraded to iOS 11.2 beta last night and it worked for a few minutes and then returned to the same behavior. I also did a system reset and the issue still persists. Please fix this APPLE!

OK, so I just had an appointment at the Genius bar.

They ran some diagnostics on my phone and put it on a dock and ran some audio dignostics (which checks all the mics and speakers and sensors etc)

Everything came back as normal. They confirmed there was no issue with hardware and it's most likely a software bug which has been introduced via some sort of edge-case config. Possibly beta software related, possibly app related. Who knows.

The advice is to do a full factory reset as the next action step. I'll do that this weekend and report back if there's any improvements.

This problem still exists after an upgrade of my 6s+ to 11.1. Voice works OK immediately after a restart. However, after a short random period calls may run for a couple of minutes, then inbound voice to the internal speaker shuts off. This affects Bluetooth i.e. in the car or all calls. This affects all calls - from cell or landline. Redialling gets the other party back, but disruption occurs once again. Today one call required 4 redial attempts to complete. the problem did not manifest itself in 11.0.2/3. Have installed, reinstalled with 11.1 twice - trying 11.1.1 today. Not to mention the huge waste of my business time trying to get a mission critical item of equipment to function as it should.

I'm afraid Apple software release quality has reached an all time low, pushing out a release with this many issues, this poorly tested would get most release managers at credible software companies fired. Don't get me started on High Sierra issues! Buck up Apple!!! Time to sort this out or start losing the loyal customer base(17 yrs) as I am seriously considering Android as my next phone platform.

I installed the IOS 11.2 Beta, the sound problem still persists, but at least now I can use my earphones to listen to music and FaceTime, when I upgraded 11.1.1 I was left with no music and FaceTime was no longer an option. The issue hasn't been fixed altogether but spending a couple of days without music was terrible. I hope Apple fixes the problem for good soon!

My 6s iphone is dropping sounds to get moving for scheduled events. Also, the swoosh when sending a text message gets silenced. My phone works. This silencing of signals is fixed by restarting. It’s like a bug is setting the Do Not Disturb logic on, but the switch on the side has not been moved nor has the moon set by swiping up on the screen been changed. I listened to iTunes and Audible with wired earphones and wonder if that is related.

I've gone to 11.1.1 on my 6s+ (waited a couple of weeks before going to 11, but have uploaded the "fixes" promptly because of so many issues). It's got worse.

I can't hear Siri or any notification alerts.

Calls are ok when on speaker or Bluetooth, but otherwise I can't hear the other party (they can hear me).

I was about to buy my 1st ever Mac (after PCing from the days of MS-DOS & Mainframes with 128k memory & punchcard interfaces), but I feel Apple are going off the rails. Mind you, considering a WindowsPhone makes my testicles retract.

Over a month of not being able to make a phone call. I have a case number with Apple and they call me every few days to ask a few questions and see if the various updates have fixed it. Has actually gotten worse, can't make or receive phone calls at all. I can confirm that Apple service team members have read this thread. When my advisor told me this was the first they had heard of the issue several weeks ago I directed him here and he read the first few posts out loud. My 1st "senior advisor" has already passed me off to a 2nd "senior advisor" who doesn't have an answer. I have been to Apple Store who has run diagnostics and verified this is definitely not a hardware issue. When I have asked them to replace my iPhone 6 with a working iPhone 6 that actually makes phone calls the advisor has ignored my question twice. I own 3 iPhones, 3 Apple Watches, a 27" iMac, an iPad, and an Apple Pencil and I will NEVER buy another Apple product if they don't fix my phone that their own software has immobilized.

I can pretty much confirm that the issue is fixed in iOS 11.2 Public Beta 2 (although no mention of it being an issue in the first place in any release notes).

I'm now on Public Beta 3 as of this morning but not made any calls yet so hopefully there hasn't been any regression in this release.

It's worth making a Genius Bar appointment and getting them to run a diagnostics on your phone. Chances are it will come up clear but at least Apple will get another support case about this issue which will help bring it to the table of the engineers.

I still keep hearing about peoplearound me experiencing all or some of the issues reported in this thread. Especially irritated about how kids from my son’s school can’t take or make calls. It’s not like their parents are deciding it’s early Xmas for a new phone and if they do, it won’t be a six.

What’s funny is even though my own kid has very low battery life and all sorts of glitches on his seven, he still talks about X. Not going to happen.

I’m now using an old six from work with 11.1 installed, because I had to, and even if very laggy, at least it works. My seven is still laying around waiting for that “future” “magic” update. As far as X goes, not going to happen here either.

I have the same issue. I have to put the call on speaker phone, it's the only way I can take a phone call other than having a bluetooth or earplugs with a microphone. I am also unable to play any videos or music from my phone's speaker. I went into the Genius Bar and they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. They said there was a newer update so they updated me to the iOS 11.1.1. Still did not work. Finally they came back and said that I have a missing prong in my lightning cable area because that was all they could find. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the sound issue, and I am still able to charge it.

My phone will ring when I get a call, and it will sound when the alarm goes off. It even plays noise when I slide the ringer and alerts bar under the settings. It makes no sense that a hardware problem would cause the phone receiver and speaker to stop working for some functions and not others.

As I was standing at the Genius Bar waiting for an answer I over heard another woman explaining to another Tech the same exact issue. They couldn't fix it. Instead they chalked it up to a hardware problem and told me I'd have to get another Iphone. So frustrating!
