After upgrading to IOS 11, i started to have this exact problem with my iphone 6s in the first minute after upgrade, it only gets normal after restart but after a while it starts to not work again. Sound not going, not coming all calls are completely silent. İ never had this problem until upgrading to IOS 11.

And seing this is also happening to others, its probably a IOS11 6s issue.

Beleve it or not. I got litlle fix.

When i deinstalled Whatsup sound got little better.

(version of iOS is 11.1.1)... ATM gonna downnload version 11.1.2 (good luck to me).

it did not help me deinstalling Viber. (if you think that gonna fix it even more, sound is better but not like before, but at least i can hear better). For Apple stuff, please check how sync with other voice call providers work.

Best of luck guys

Hello,

I did a clean install on my Iphone 8 and had the problem with low level of speech is being clipped so the other person is asking to speak louder. If you speak loud it is OK, as soon if you dim your voice the other does not hear you any more.

On speaker mode all is OK. The problem is with low level audio input in bottom microphone. On speaker there are more microphones active. Went to shop and changed my Iphone 8 for a new one, clean install again switched SIM card and same problem again.

Easy to test, start speaking at low volume and have another phone on your ear with microphone off, start switching between normal and speaker mode.

Hope Apple will fix this quick.!

Same problem, took 2 iPhone 6plus one with iOS 10.3.3, the other iOS 11.1.2

Comparing both with voice, music, speaker mode, VoLTE, 1X calls, WFC, 3rd party VoIP, noise cancellation - the mic is consistently not transmitting or picking up audible noise.

If you put your voice over the mic of the mobile originating device and hum~~~ it will start to break up on the receiving end of the device.

Apple has messed up the voice encoding somehow.

I have noticed my 6s Plus now behaving much better over the last 2 weeks! I have not had the problem of no audio with incoming or outgoing calls since that time. I currently have iOS 11.1.1. I don't know if the problem was fixed by that release, or by an update to some other app that may have been conflicting with iOS.

Thanks but this is not a very helpful reply. It asks you to test your mic restart the phone! I think there is a fundamental problem with the iOS 11.1.2 upgrade. It works on my 6S but has stopped the mic from working on my 6. Only the speaker and headphones work.

Can we get someone from Apple to urgently address this issue, its getting frustrating and there are no responses from Apple staff!

Do you have same applications installed on both devices? I suspect that there is problem with CallKit in XCode. I had problem with sound when i had Whatsapp. I deleted app and my sound got better for like 50%. Still sound is lower than it used to. But it would give me usefull int if that's the real reason. (now my sound is constantly good. not great but good). That give me reason to suspect there is problem with this feature.

[correction edit]

Hey guys I found a way to just improve the voice volume for the receiving end - but it doesn't fix the voice drowning out - disable VOLTE and it should work fine - albeit at a lower and poor voice quality but at least louder

My phone is on VZW, and as many of you have observed, if you speak or hum~~ at the microphone, the receiving party will hear the voice slowly drown out in "steps" - this suspected it had something to do /w voice encoding.

Once I disabled LTE - Voice + Data to LTE- Data Only (in Carrier Data settings on your IOS 11 - 11.1.2) it's louder for the receiving end... just don't sing - if you keep the sentences short and bursty you can avoid the mic drowning your voice out - there is something wrong with the voice encoding normalization that goes on in the software

Seriously, there is a problem after iOS 11 update on Iphone 6s. The calling volume just disappears in between and the other person cannot hear anything. I am annoyed with this lately so that I have to speak my personal conversations either by shouting or by putting phone on speaker. The hearing speaker too had crackling sound issue which still exists till date.

So the issue has finally gone away for me after doing a full factory reset.

I didn’t restore from a backup and set things up as a new iPhone.

I’ve been slowly installing apps as I need them as I suspect that a rogue app was causing the issue.

So far I have all the usuals installed:

Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, WhatsApp, Slack, Amazon, Banking apps, eBay,.....

No issues so far so all these apps can be ruled out as being the culprit.

If the issue comes back I’ll try and recall what the last installed app was and report back.

Hopefully this is helpful info.

I just tested phone by deleting all applications and reseting it. Sound problem is still there. I know it's better than it was before but it's still terrible for phone that i payed almost 900e. (iPhone 7). I think that this sound problems are reason why i did not got new iPhone. I had battery problem with iphone 6s with sound problem after updating. With Iphone 7 i had no problems till update to iOS 11. + versions. That make me to believe that maybe just maybe problem is not me. Giving 1200e for phone that might have same problem in next version of iOS is not in my plans. So i guess I'm stuck with i7 till it stop working. For next phone i might think about Android. Cuz this is really frustrating. I never had problem with calls on devices that are 10x less expensive. I don't need this.

Alright I've updated to iOS 11.2 and everythings back to being Perfect. Every bug I've noticed has been fixed. Amazing.
Now I can make calls and voice memos and screen recordings and my voice is clearly audible.

And Screen Recordings audio is available when imported to iMovie- not like before. And no lag or hiccups on my SE. Smooth as butter.

And on another note- audio from Airpods seem louder now at max volume.
