iPhone not getting text notifications

Since upgrading to iOS 11, my iPhone 5S no longer makes a sound or displays a notification on my locked screen when I receive a text message.

I've checked that "Do Not Disturb" is turned off, and that the sound mute button is not turned on. I also checked in Settings / Sounds and I have a sound selected for Text Messages.

When I get a text message, the only way I know I got it is if I click on the home button to start up the display. In addition to not making any sound, the text message doesn't even light up my phone display when I get it, but if I click on the Home button to turn on the screen, I can see the notification.

This is a bit of problem, I depend on text messages quite a bit in my job and now I have no idea if I'm getting a text message unless I keep checking my phone. How do I fix this, or is this a bug in iOS 11?

I have checked or tried the following:

  • Do Not Disturb is not turned on at the time.
  • Bluetooth, when on, is not connected to any other device.
  • Updating to iOS 11.03 didn’t fix the problem.
  • I do not have an Apple Watch.
  • Restarting iPhone makes no difference.
  • In Notification Settings, Show Previews is set to Always.
  • Messages notification settings are: Allow: ON, Badge App Icon: ON, Show in CarPlay: ON, Show on Lock Screen: ON, Show in History: ON, Show as Banners: ON (Temporary), Show Previews: ON, Repeat Alerts: Twice.

I still don't get notifications when receiving some text messages. Unless I go into Settings and turn Bluetooth off.

I encourage everyone to report this bug directly to Apple here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple

I legit just bought a brand new IPhone 6S and got it on September 24th 2018. Everything was working perfectly, my first issue was downloading apps that were free but they still wanted some kind of payment information. So I go do so, than it tells me my Apple ID Is associated with to many credit cards, when I’ve only used maybe 3 the most trying to fix this so I can download apps. But someone resolved that for me, and NOW MY ISSUE. I went and did the upgrade device for my phone and I got iOS 12 now, ever since I did that that day all was fine. I went to sleep woke up and I’m not getting alerted, or my texts tone is not going off when I get any text messages. So if I’m not looking at my phone every 5 mins I won’t know I got one until I do see it an it will be the next day or hours after the fact. WHY is it doing this? My side button isn’t turned off to silent, it’s on, I went into settings and messages even re picked different sounds for my phone to go off when I got texts but still not a **** thing! I’m getting upset cuz I just spent $ an bought this phone after 2 years of being stuck with a POS prepaid that had no internet or nothing. So here I go back to my iPhone that I love so much but I’ve never had more problems in my years of having every iPhone. That’s why I NEVER updated the software even tho ppl talk **** and say it’s bad I need to do the upgrade, but look what happens when I do. And I’ve done everything I know and I STILL GET NO SOUND OR ALERTED WHEN I GET TEXT MESSAGES!!!! But phone calls and all else come thru and go off with no issues at all. 😑 ugh.

do you have the apple watch? I had problems until I turned off the ringer on the watch and then I could hear my messages come in again.

also - don't mean to offend - but be sure under settings > Sounds & Haptics you not have the volume "change with buttons" on. Be sure that's off. If you have your music turned down low and that button is on, your phone and messages will be turned too low

This is a problem that has been rattling around for a while and it does not seem that there is any one fix. I feel your pain.

If none of this works, read all the posts here - some of these suggestions work for some people.

I had a serious problem with my new iPhone X Max where no photo programs would pull the photos off. I had to do a factory reset and rebuild from scratch. All the apple "geniuses" said "oh did you try a reboot?"

I recently purchased the Apple Watch series 4 (non cellular). Pairing it to my IPhone7 was easy and simple. However I have noticed that I no longer get message notifications on my iPhone. I understand by design, message notifications would be expected to be received on the watch. I took the watch off. I received text messages with no alerts anywhere (except on my laptop).

I have the most recent versions of software for the Watch and iPhone installed. What I have found is IF I disable Bluetooth, messages notifications begin as expected on the phone. I would REALLY like to see Apple give the customer the ability to configure where and how messages and notifications in general are received on both the watch and the phone, concurrently or not.

The problem I am facing is I receive text alerts from work that I may need to wake up for and the haptic feedback on the watch is not sufficient. There are times I want the phone to continue notifications with the watch, there are times when I may want notifications on just the watch. There are times I may not want any notifications. For the money spent, I feel I should be given the option to configure as needed.

Summary, message notifications aren't working when Bluetooth is enabled and the watch needs Bluetooth (or wifi) to communicate with the phone. Too much hassle having to remember to turn Bluetooth off when in the house, but back on when I leave the house.. and to take the watch off before bedtime so the phone will alert me loud enough to wake me... I am within 30 days of purchase of the watch and am seriously considering returning it.

Is it me? Am I missing a configuration option somewhere? Based on some of the posts above, it appears to be Apple... sigh
