iPhone not getting text notifications

Since upgrading to iOS 11, my iPhone 5S no longer makes a sound or displays a notification on my locked screen when I receive a text message.

I've checked that "Do Not Disturb" is turned off, and that the sound mute button is not turned on. I also checked in Settings / Sounds and I have a sound selected for Text Messages.

When I get a text message, the only way I know I got it is if I click on the home button to start up the display. In addition to not making any sound, the text message doesn't even light up my phone display when I get it, but if I click on the Home button to turn on the screen, I can see the notification.

This is a bit of problem, I depend on text messages quite a bit in my job and now I have no idea if I'm getting a text message unless I keep checking my phone. How do I fix this, or is this a bug in iOS 11?

I had the symptoms mention in this topic and was equally frustrated.... I fixed it in the messages app - when you receive a message from someone of course you can swipe to the left to delete it - there is a new option there next to the delete "show alerts" / "hide alerts" - right next to the delete. Make sure its "show alerts". that fixed it for me. I must have pressed it accidentally when trying to delete a message.

One of you must have "Hide Alerts" toggled to the on position. That is what my wife had. It was hiding all alerts when I texted her so her phone did not alert her in any way. She was missing all of my texts. This "feature" can be set per contact/person. For some reason she had it toggled to on for my contact only so I was the only one she was not being alerted for -- put a strain on our marriage! :-) Go to a text message from your wife or on her phone one from you, and click on the circle "i" at the top right. Scroll down and you should see "hide alerts". Make sure it is turned OFF!

It would be lovely if this is what it was for everyone - many posts just like this on this discussion but it is not the problem for most of us.

There is a big list of causes but the most common is that IF you have a Bluetooth device on, especially the Apple Watch, you won’t get the sound notification. A lot of people say a Bluetooth headset will do it too and I - for one - am sick and tired of people saying just turn off all Bluetooth, as if THAT is a terrific fix. I’m not pitching my watch to fix my phone.

I’ve had this issue since IOS 11 came out on my old 6s and Apple Watch. Now I have an 8plus and it is the same. What’s worse is I reported it as a bug to Apple in March but got no reply. There are over 5000 people on various boards talking about it. Not going to ditch my watch to get notifications and hands free is required in my state, so I’m not going to disconnect the phone from my truck.

I've also been having trouble, sometimes notifications come through without a problem, but sometimes the phone does not alert me. Turning off my bluetooth access is not ideal as I am using Fitbit app to help with weight loss and I need to leave bluetooth on so that it can sync. I'm at a loss as to what to do. I just got the iPhone 7 and love it, except for this one issue.

Me too!!! I finally disabled the 'read receipt' for him because he keeps accusing me of ignoring his texts! I sent him a text this morning and could see he was typing a reply. I x'd out of our message thread and put my phone to sleep and sat and watched it. No alert flashed across my screen, nor was there a notification showing when I went back in to my home screen. Yet my sister sent a text and it came thru with all the bells and whistles. Someone better fix this quickly.

I think so. When the Apple watch is connected it automatically silences alerts on the iPhone. So I disconnected my messages and the alerts on iPhone work. I wish Apple gave me a choice. I want to use customized ringtones, to recognize whose who. The Apple Watch just ‘dings’ all the time. I hope Apple begins to listen more, and allows for more choice.
