iPhone not getting text notifications

Since upgrading to iOS 11, my iPhone 5S no longer makes a sound or displays a notification on my locked screen when I receive a text message.

I've checked that "Do Not Disturb" is turned off, and that the sound mute button is not turned on. I also checked in Settings / Sounds and I have a sound selected for Text Messages.

When I get a text message, the only way I know I got it is if I click on the home button to start up the display. In addition to not making any sound, the text message doesn't even light up my phone display when I get it, but if I click on the Home button to turn on the screen, I can see the notification.

This is a bit of problem, I depend on text messages quite a bit in my job and now I have no idea if I'm getting a text message unless I keep checking my phone. How do I fix this, or is this a bug in iOS 11?

First, ranting without substance brings a lot of noise to the conversation.

1. Try contacting Apple Support to walk through all options for notifications/alerts settings as many more options have become available with iOS 11. (800) APL-CARE or 800-275-2273 if you can't be bothered to spell it out.

(Pro Tip: if you are open to suggestions and willing to listen without interruptions, sometimes a solution arises.)

2. Saying it DISABLES ALL TEXT ALERTS on your iPhone permanently is false and you know that but if you would like to help the situation you are always able to send Feedback - iPhone - Apple

3. There absolutely is a (hide alerts) feature when pressing the ℹ on the side of a phone number or text thread as you can choose to hide alerts by individual or by group.

4. I also have the same issue and Bluetooth seems to be the factor at hand, because when it is turned off the phone allows me to receive text message alerts on lock screen with no problem.

5. For some people, they mentioned that deleting the conversation thread allowed them to receive notifications with no issue again.

6. For some people, particularly those who it happened with only one person, check that hide alerts was not enabled. To check this, two ways:

Slide from right to left and you will see (iOS 11) a blue box to [hide alerts] or red box to [delete]

-or-

see #3 above.

This frustrates me as well since I also own an Apple Watch and just want things to work. Remember everyone here wants to help solve the issue or offer suggestions, to which some might fit and some might not... That is what a forum is designed to help with for everyone, not a one size fits all. I do not think going to iOS 10 will resolve this as other people have mentioned this happening on iOS 10 as well.

Good luck because we are both in the same boat and hope a software update comes soon to resolve this.

I fixed it in the messages app - when you receive a message from someone of course you can swipe to the left to delete it - there is a new option there next to the delete "show alerts" / "hide alerts" - right next to the delete. Make sure its "show alerts". that fixed it for me

You are probably the 50th person who's posted this as a solution in this thread. It isn't the solution. Many have already confirmed that "hide alerts" is not turned on but their notifications are still not working, including mine.

The problem is clearly with Apple's messaging and notifications system, and after several iOS updates the problem still hasn't been fixed and Apple has yet to acknowledge the problem and probably never will until it has been fixed, if it ever gets fixed.

The only way to let Apple know about this is by sending feedback to them via this form: Feedback - iPhone - Apple

It is a Bluetooth handshake issue or hardware issue that apple supposedly is working on fixing.

Apple is working on a fix? How do you know? It would be great if they were, but, this has been going on for over 6 months now and none of the recent iOS updates have fixed it.

I encourage everyone who is having this problem to please report it directly to Apple here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Once again, "Hide Alerts" is not the fix for this problem even though people keep chiming in on this thread saying "I fixed it by showing alerts!" No you didn't. This does not fix the problem for a majority of us who still can't get alerts or notifications when we receive a text message.

Be sure to let Apple know there is a problem with their messaging notifications for quite a while by filling out the form on this page: Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Hi,

My iPhone also stopped making sounds when text messages arrived. The text message wasn't send to my iWatch neither.

I managed to resolve it by disabling "Wi-Fi calling on this phone":

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Phone > Wi-Fi Calling.
  3. Switch the Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone slider to Off.

Kind regards,

Roger

This problem has been intermittent the whole time--some times for hours then other times for minutes or seconds--since 11.0 and continues after 11.01. The keyboard clicking sound stopped yesterday while I was typing a text then started again about 20 seconds later as I continued to type. Bluetooth disabling isn't an option as I need it to talk to my car. I also have submitted a report to Apple feedback. This is the first time I've had major issues after a big system upgrade and now also battling little stuff after installing High Sierra. Darn!

If you have an apple watch, this is most likely why you’re not getting notifications when your phone is locked. It’s going straight to the watch. So make sure you turn it off, because now we don’t need to turn Bluetooth on to get notifications on apple watch. If its near your iphone, all your messages are going to go there automatically.

    I have done so:

"Summary: When notifications (e.g, iMessage) is not permitted on the lock screen, neither the expected "Temporary" nor "Persistent" banners appear after unlocking.

Details: Prior to iOS 11, when a notification was not permitted on the lock screen, a banner (drop-down from top, or modal dialog) was displayed upon unlocking the device (when, for example, viewing the home screen). As of the new notification architecture, unless a notification is permitted on the lock screen, there is no notification (other than transient sound or vibration). The prior behavior was not only preferable (after unlocking, a notification was displayed to ensure it was noticed), but also the current behavior is contrary to the UI in Settings (because the user is given the option of having a banner displayed)."

Guys!! I think I fixed my issue.. so we have an older iPad mini and when I updated to iOS 11, I noticed that I actually signed into my iCloud account on my phone, which I haven’t done in years. Problem with that was my old iPad was also connected to the same iCloud account. I figured I would check just for the **** of it since I’ve literallg tried ALL of your guys suggestions and what do you know, there was a notification on there with my cell number.. don’t remember exactly what it said but yeah. Got rid of the message and had my husband try to send me a text. Voila! Sounds are back, notifications, vibration.. it’s like it never happened 😑🤔. Not sure if this is what fixed it but I’m guessing it was.. anyway, thought I’d share! Good luck everyone..

Yup +1 from me on my 8+. The screen works after a reboot and will continue for a while but will then just stop working. No notification and pulling down from the top of the screen results in a blank screen.

This isn't a notification routing problem I.e. appearing on another device as it works correctly after a reboot.

The Bluetooth suggestion didn't improve anything for me.

This is a huge bug that needs to be dealt with ASAP. I was hoping 11.0.1 would fix it but alas not.

Issue reported to Apple for what it's worth.

Updated to 11.0.2. on my 7+ , still having issues with text messages showing on my notification screen. The sound and vibration will go off but no texts will show on the screen. I still have to unlock the phone and manually go to the messages app in order to check if I have a new message or not. This is by far the worst IOS update i've seen Apple put out.

    EDIT:

Possible solution, I had my text size in Display set one notch higher than the default, I turned it down to the normal size and text messages now appear on my lock-screen.

I too am having this issue even after 11.01. I feel like it may be a combination of Showing Notifications and Do Not Disturb.

    1. With Do not disturb Off the Silence option was set to always and I never received audio notification of messages regardless of the phone being locked or unlocked. Switching the Silense option to "While iPhone is locked" allowed the audio tone to play when unlocked but not when locked. Again with Do Not Disturb disabled.

    2. For me changing the notifications settings > Show Previews to "always" appears to allow the tones to play as expected.

Same issue! Brand new 8 plus, iWatch 2, this all blew up and i lost all text sounds / banners and iWatch alerts when i updated the iPhone to ios 11. This totally *****. Why would Apple destroy the ability to get text alerts and notifications on the iPhone screen and on the iWatch? it does not give alerts on my iWatch anymore for calls, texts etc. This is completely broken, ruined. Yes we all know how to turn on or off our alerts so it is NOT a "user issue". There is nothing wrong with my settings. ios 11 broke this, needs to be addressed and fixed. You just bricked our iPhone for everything important that we rely on to communicate with others- I now have no idea if my Wife texted me, if the home alarm system went off, if my bank deposited funds. What a complete joke. Apple, you do realize this is a PHONE right, not just an expensive media player!!
