iPhone not getting text notifications

Since upgrading to iOS 11, my iPhone 5S no longer makes a sound or displays a notification on my locked screen when I receive a text message.

I've checked that "Do Not Disturb" is turned off, and that the sound mute button is not turned on. I also checked in Settings / Sounds and I have a sound selected for Text Messages.

When I get a text message, the only way I know I got it is if I click on the home button to start up the display. In addition to not making any sound, the text message doesn't even light up my phone display when I get it, but if I click on the Home button to turn on the screen, I can see the notification.

This is a bit of problem, I depend on text messages quite a bit in my job and now I have no idea if I'm getting a text message unless I keep checking my phone. How do I fix this, or is this a bug in iOS 11?

Have you checked Settings>Notifications>Messages to make sure that you have either Banner or Alert selected as the notification type and that you have sounds enabled there?

I personally really dislike the apple store people. They will use a total reset for anything they don't know and because apple calls them 'geniuses' they don't ever want to say they don't know.

Try these:

go to settings > Notifications > Messages > and set the banner to Persistent - you probably have it on Temporary

Allow Notificatios should be ON

Sounds - should be something LOUD

Show on Lock screen ON

Show as Banners ON

also be aware that if you listen to music and have the volume low, check Settings > Sounds - and make sure Change with Buttons in OFF - you can turn your ringer ALL the way UP and still have your music set low. If you have it ON, then turning down the music turns down the ringer of the phone too

Philip says:

1). Connecting the iPhone to a BT device knocks out audio alert tones AND

2). Tones are not transmitted to the BT device

but I have AirPods and I get both ring and text tones through the AirPods which are turned on and working - what screwed it for me was my apple watch - which I LOVE and will not turn off - but since I turned off the ring on the watch, I am not having the problems with bluetooth

One of you must have "Hide Alerts" toggled to the on position. That is what my wife had. It was hiding all alerts when I texted her so her phone did not alert her in any way. She was missing all of my texts. This "feature" can be set per contact/person. For some reason she had it toggled to on for my contact only so I was the only one she was not being alerted for -- put a strain on our marriage! :-) Go to a text message from your wife or on her phone one from you, and click on the circle "i" at the top right. Scroll down and you should see "hide alerts". Make sure it is turned OFF!

do you have the apple watch? I had problems until I turned off the ringer on the watch and then I could hear my messages come in again.

also - don't mean to offend - but be sure under settings > Sounds & Haptics you not have the volume "change with buttons" on. Be sure that's off. If you have your music turned down low and that button is on, your phone and messages will be turned too low

This is a problem that has been rattling around for a while and it does not seem that there is any one fix. I feel your pain.

If none of this works, read all the posts here - some of these suggestions work for some people.

I had a serious problem with my new iPhone X Max where no photo programs would pull the photos off. I had to do a factory reset and rebuild from scratch. All the apple "geniuses" said "oh did you try a reboot?"

It is my observation that notifications that are not to show on the lock screen (for privacy reasons) are suppressed completely. Under iOS 10 (and earlier), as soon as the iPhone is unlocked, the notification shows up (I use the slide-in-from-top mode for the Banner). Regardless of whether they are set to "Temporary" or "Persistent" (the new terms for the Banner notification), they do not show up unless you also allow them on the lock screen. I consider that to be a bug.

If you are upgraded to ios 11 or higher, check your date& time if it is automatically set or not, If not, go to SETTINGS> GENERAL> DATE & TIME> and tick the "SET AUTOMATICALLY" to ON (GREEN button). Once done, try restarting your phone for about 5 minutes. After that try a "test" text message to one's number so that you can see if it works for you!

I have the same problem like you, my usual time on phone is 10 minutes in advance before updating to ios 11, I haven't encountered this "out of order messaging" and "not receiving notified Text" until I recently updated to ios11, tried so many suggestions from the forum but nothing works, so lately (just this today) I found out that ios 11 requires automated time and date. This works on me, try it. Hope I could help.
