iPhone not getting text notifications

Since upgrading to iOS 11, my iPhone 5S no longer makes a sound or displays a notification on my locked screen when I receive a text message.

I've checked that "Do Not Disturb" is turned off, and that the sound mute button is not turned on. I also checked in Settings / Sounds and I have a sound selected for Text Messages.

When I get a text message, the only way I know I got it is if I click on the home button to start up the display. In addition to not making any sound, the text message doesn't even light up my phone display when I get it, but if I click on the Home button to turn on the screen, I can see the notification.

This is a bit of problem, I depend on text messages quite a bit in my job and now I have no idea if I'm getting a text message unless I keep checking my phone. How do I fix this, or is this a bug in iOS 11?

I have checked or tried the following:

  • Do Not Disturb is not turned on at the time.
  • Bluetooth, when on, is not connected to any other device.
  • Updating to iOS 11.03 didn’t fix the problem.
  • I do not have an Apple Watch.
  • Restarting iPhone makes no difference.
  • In Notification Settings, Show Previews is set to Always.
  • Messages notification settings are: Allow: ON, Badge App Icon: ON, Show in CarPlay: ON, Show on Lock Screen: ON, Show in History: ON, Show as Banners: ON (Temporary), Show Previews: ON, Repeat Alerts: Twice.

I still don't get notifications when receiving some text messages. Unless I go into Settings and turn Bluetooth off.

Is Apple trying to reduce the disruption of notifications by only alerting on one device?

It's not a new feature. It's always worked that way. And yes, Apple described it in the Keynote that introduced the first Apple Watch a a way to reduce disruptions.

You can also turn off Wrist Detection in the Watch app. You'll then get notifications on both devices. However, you will need to enter a passcode on the watch for most things and won't be able to use Apple Pay.

I don’t think it’s always worked this way, at least not the way it’s is being described in this thread.

I am a new Apple Watch owner/user, so I am not sure what the prior behavior was, but other members of my family are long time AW users and they are the ones complaining about the behavior change.

As others have mentioned, it seems to be inconsistent and sometimes alerts, sometimes it does not. Regardless, it should be a setting that is user configurable.

As of iOS 11.0.3, shutting off Bluetooth and thereby disconnecting the Apple Watch works.

I've had an Apple Watch since the release date of the first one. With Wrist Detection turned on: If the phone is locked, notifications come to the watch. If the phone is not locked, they go to the phone. If the watch is locked, they go to the phone.

There does seem to be more than one issue being described in this thread.

I had this problem with my wife's phone not getting text sound notifications when I send her a text message.

I solved this. Go into the Messages iPhone app. Go to the list of text recipients. If you left swipe on one you can delete it (i.e. deleting all the text messages who have received) or you can toggle Hide Alerts/Show Alerts. It turns out my wife had Hide Alerts selected. Once I changed it the text message sounds worked again.

Agreed. To be clear; I have no headphones. I have no watch, Bluetooth speakers, or other such Bluetooth devices. I turned off my Bluetooth (from settings), reset my network, than turned off my phone and turned it back on. All of this...and still the problem persists. This is clearly a bug and they need to address it. Hear the Samsung S8 is an impressive product.

Just offering a "me too". Turning off Bluetooth in the slide-up control center fixes the problem temporarily. Can even re-enable Bluetooth and get normal notification function. Unsure of how long this fix lasts.

Wondering if it's a function of me having Messages open on my MacBook Pro (10.12.6) as well as iOS 11.0.3.

So. "Me too" and "FYI". Cheers, y'all.

JUST WANTED TO LET YOU ALL KNOW THAT THIS PROBLEM IS BECAUSE SOMEHOW “DO NOT DISTURB” GOT TURNED ON IN THE PROCESS OF THE UPDATE AS A BUG.

No, that is not the problem, have you read any of the other messages in this thread?

The problem is related to Bluetooth being turned on, it has nothing to do with "Do Not Disturb" mode, which would block ALL notifications, not just some as is happening with this problem.

The tech told me a lot of people were having this issue and, even though this makes no sense, this works. Go to Sounds and Haptics. Turn off Cover To Mute. It’s worked ever since.

I doubt that is the cause of this problem. I have an iPhone 5S which doesn't even have this as a Settings option. This problem exists for lots of people using different iPhone models. The only common thing is that we all have iOS 11 installed, which is when the problem started.
