iPhone not getting text notifications

Since upgrading to iOS 11, my iPhone 5S no longer makes a sound or displays a notification on my locked screen when I receive a text message.

I've checked that "Do Not Disturb" is turned off, and that the sound mute button is not turned on. I also checked in Settings / Sounds and I have a sound selected for Text Messages.

When I get a text message, the only way I know I got it is if I click on the home button to start up the display. In addition to not making any sound, the text message doesn't even light up my phone display when I get it, but if I click on the Home button to turn on the screen, I can see the notification.

This is a bit of problem, I depend on text messages quite a bit in my job and now I have no idea if I'm getting a text message unless I keep checking my phone. How do I fix this, or is this a bug in iOS 11?

I have checked or tried the following:

  • Do Not Disturb is not turned on at the time.
  • Bluetooth, when on, is not connected to any other device.
  • Updating to iOS 11.03 didn’t fix the problem.
  • I do not have an Apple Watch.
  • Restarting iPhone makes no difference.
  • In Notification Settings, Show Previews is set to Always.
  • Messages notification settings are: Allow: ON, Badge App Icon: ON, Show in CarPlay: ON, Show on Lock Screen: ON, Show in History: ON, Show as Banners: ON (Temporary), Show Previews: ON, Repeat Alerts: Twice.

I still don't get notifications when receiving some text messages. Unless I go into Settings and turn Bluetooth off.

I encourage everyone to report this bug directly to Apple here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple

After much tinkering, I now have sounds on our iPhone 8, iPhone 6plus, and air2 ipads after the IOS 11 update. My Blue Tooth is turned on. Under Settings>Notifications everything is turned on and "Persistent" is activated. Sounds are on "Circuit." Mute is not activated on outer left of my iPhone 6 plus and I am not on Do not Disturb. Under Settings> Sound, volume is turned all the way up. Keyboard Clicks is on, as is Lock Sound. Also, I went into my "Contacts" and reinstated the sound tones for Ring tones and Text Tone for my contacts. I think that doing this last part is what finally turned my text notification sounds back on. Hope this works for everyone else.

Solved for me: I had to dig around because turning off BT didn't work for me. What did work: disabling "Scheduled" Do Not Disturb setting. Since being on iPhone (6s Plus), I've religiously used the scheduled DND feature. After updating (restore, clean update, restore backup), to iOS 11 and then iOS 11.1, I still had this problem of not receiving message notifications when screen was locked. After troubleshooting and trying the BT thing, nothing worked. I thought it might be DND related since changes were made to that system to accommodate DND while driving. Since turning off the "Scheduled" DND setting, all message notifications have worked as normal. Haven't tried turning it back on as I've just been toggling on DND from control panel before going to bed and off when waking up, which isn't automatic but fairly convenient.

FYI: this is the main DND feature, not "hide alerts" in iMessage. To change, go to Settings>Do Not Disturb (right below Control Panel setting).

I'm having the same issue with my iPhone X paired to my Fitbit. Even if my notifications are "off" on my fitbit, simply being connected via bluetooth disables alerts on my phone screen when it's locked. Very annoying, as I have different text tones for various contacts and expect to hear the notifications when my phone is not on silent mode. I didn't spend this much money on this device for it to decide FOR me when I want to see and hear my notifications.

Apple needs to fix this.

I’m having the same issues on my 7 plus as well. Now this morning for the 3rd time since updating to ios11 my alarm has not gone off. I also had my cellular data tick try to stay permanently off, this was a different occasion. I rebooted the phone & cellular restored to normal. I can’t handle my alarm not working and NOT receiving text sound notifications!!! Please fix this mess Apple!

"Ensure that you do not enable the do not disturb option for some contacts. Open the message app feature and check if a moon sign appears next to the contact. If yes, then you should disable it. Open messages, tap the info button and disable do not disturb." What I did was: checked info of the contact that was texting me, and CHECKED OFF HIDE ALERTS. Hi

I’ve been having this problem too.

I’ve only just worked out that it’s linked to the do not disturb whilst driving feature. If someone messages me whilst that feature is turned on then I get no other audio notifications on my phone until I turn it off and on whereas I would have expected them to have restarted as soon as I have either disconnected from the car or confirmed I’m not driving.

I’ve now disabled this nice ‘safety feature’ from Apple and will go back to sticking my phone in my pocket or centre console whilst driving and let it alert away!

Fed up isn’t even the word. I get n notifications. My iMessages don’t show up on either of my iPads. I get notifications once in awhile on my watch. I have tried everything on here and nothing works. i took my problem to the Apple store and they can’t fix it. They reluctantly agree it’s been a problem since the iOS update. Fix it. That’s all I can say. We spend more on Apple products than any other product out there. The prices keep going up. We get gouged on all the accessories. FIX IT!!!

Here's something interesting. I was not getting text notifications when my phone was unlocked after upgrading to IOS 11. Nothing worked but I saw that Do Not Disturbed was on. When I disabled it the notifications worked. However, the Informmation blurb for the setting reads " When Do Not Disturbed is enabled calls and alerts that arrive while the phone is locked will be silenced..." Clearly that's not true. i don't go out much so my phone is never locked.

I looked up this chain as I stopped getting text notifications yesterday - no banners on screen and no ping. I have an iPhone 6 now running 11.1.2 Looking at the various suggestions I realised that the 'Do not Disturb' feature had been activated. Now I know what the little moon icon means! I have no idea how this setting was activated; as a precaution I have also deactivated the No Notification While Driving feature. So far at least one or both of these steps has done the trick - at any rate for me. As I have had the phone for almost two years and this problem has never occurred before, I have to assume that IOS upgrades have somehow triggered the situation.

I have this problem also on my iPhone 7 Plus. Strangely, notifications push through to my watch (a Pebble), which is set to show notifications only if they hit the lock screen of my iPhone.

I called AppleCare and they unhelpfully suggested I reset all settings or do a fresh OS install. They were not interested in the fact that over a thousand people have reported having this issue on the Apple discussion forums. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.
