ios 11 slow wifi speeds

Updated my 6s and now my WiFi speeds are at a crawl mostly under 25mbs in the same room as a laptop getting 75mbs download speeds.

I’ve done a Forced Restart

Toggled WiFi on/off

Forgotten WiFi networks

Reset WiFi networks

Turned off Location Services

Etc etc etc

The only thing I have done is reset the entire phone 📱

Anyone else reporting these issues?

Try connecting to WiFi on the 5 GHz band instead of 2.4 GHz if your router has the option. This worked for me.

I had this same problem since I upgraded to iOS 11 on my iPhone 6S Plus. I tried everything suggested except for a full restore.

I was connected to my router via the 2.4 GHz band when having the problem. I would get >50 Mbps on my Macbook but <1 Mbps on my iPhone when running a speed test.

I instead connected my iPhone to my router's 5 GHz band and have consistently been getting >50 Mbps on my iPhone now and have had no problem with WiFi on iOS 11 since switching bands.

I hope this helps all of you.

Both my iPhone 6 and brand new iPad Pro, running iOS 11.2.2 are still getting only 50% of previous WiFi speed on iOS 10.x.x with my NetGear R7000 Nighthawk router (latest firmware), as measured by Ookla/Speedtest. I have tried every suggestion (except complete factory reset on iPhone) AND ALSO purchased a new iPad Pro.

Both the iPhone 6 and the iPad Pro run at full speed on most of my relatives’ other brand routers. It seems to be an incompatibility with all iOS 11 devices and SOME WiFi routers.

I’ve literally tried everything to correct this speed issue with my iphone 7 Plus and 6 Plus.

I’ve restored as new (loading new without a backup), reset all settings and even replaced our modem. iPhone is inconsistent with speeds, in same area our iPads (Air 2 / 10.5) get full speeds.

Oddly enough, I can switch Airplane mode on/off on the iPhones and speed comes back temporarily. Eventually goes back to same behavior.

I’ve run plenty of tests within 15-30 seconds of each other on identical servers and the iPads are always rock solid. The iPhones are inconsistent (1/2 speed or less of iPad). Never saw this behavior on iOS 10.

It has to be some kind of software issue. I’ve reported to Apple several times. Hopefully they will fix soon.

I have some of the same issues.

IPhone 8, 256 gb.

Use airport extreme and expanding Wi-Fi with the latest airport express.

When I'm closest to the extreme I have around 140 Mbps. When I'm closest to the express I have around 45 Mbps.

When I go back to the extreme I still have around 45 Mbps.

If I toggle the Wi-Fi off and on again in the iPhone, I get around 140 Mbps on the extreme.

It's even worse on my iPad air.

I’ve been sending diagnostic logs in every time I have a WiFi issue.

Another thing I’ve noticed. When iPhone goes into WiFi power save mode, sometimes it doesn’t wake up. It appears like it’s connecte, but it isn’t. Have to disconnect/reconnect and then it’s good. Same behavior happened to iPad yesterday as well. I’ve even swapped out modems.

These WiFi issues started happening after upgrading to iOS 11. They didn’t happen on iOS 10. Has to be software related.

Chaz,

i just tried something thing on my iPhone. When I turn Wi-Fi Networking OFF under Location Services/System Services, I only get about 1/2 of my connections rated speed. Turn it back on and full speed. Tried this several times on same speed test server.

When I try on my iPad, makes no difference.

Odd. Maybe an issue with Wi-Fi Networking Setting in iPhone software?

Maybe I have found some clues...

Attached you'll find my network configuration.

The problem has begun with my wife's new iPhone SE, iOS 11.3

In our house we only use the 5ghz band due to the incredible number of interfering surrounding 2.4 ghz networks (54...).

For the same reason I had to create a completely wired Apple routers network, as showed in the picture, with the exception of an old Airport Express used as a wifi extender in my son's bedroom.

Using Ookla the "normal" attained speeds are: DL 94 Mbps / UL 48 Mbps.

Theese speeds are constant over many iOS devices in any angle of the house: iPad, iPad Pro, iPhone 6S, all using iOS 11.3 (same speeds are obtained by non-apple devices, wired and wireless).

With the notable exception of the new iPhone SE.

BUT it depends on the "kind" of Apple router to which it's connected: the Time Capsule and the Airport Extreme are fine, I can get the max speed using my wife's phone.

But when it is connected to the two wired Airport Express I can get just one third of the max speed in DL, being the UL speed optimal. And when it's connected to the old Airport Express...well...much slower

This happens ONLY using the iPhone SE

I came to the conclusion that we are considering at least three variables: the device operating system (iOS version) the router chipset (BTW all my routers have the latest firmware) and the device chipset.

Hope it helps!User uploaded file

Hi there,

Had the very same issue with my iPhone 7 Red 256gb. Everyone else in the house were fine on their devices (other smartphones, laptops etc) Nothing large was downloading across my network. No matter what I did my iPhone on iOS 11.0 would hang and not load web pages on Safari, Amazon, eBay app my Elder Scrolls Legends just wouldn't load, hanging etc. Tried soft & hard reboot and nothing!! Grrr

Rolled back to 10.3.3 where my iPhone 7 Red is much happier :-) And is going to stay that way until Apple sort out the bugs in iOS11.

Plus one thing that really annoys me! Is the volume rockers now control the volume on the media and not your ringer!!! Which is really annoying!!!

Kind regards,

Anthony

It’s def a software issue. My wife has the exact phone I do (except in white) and she gets mail super fast. Of course same network etc. I even have more space than she does AND she is on 11.01, not .02

Turning OFF cellular assist when WiFi is slow helped somewhat. This is a dumb setting anyway.

I have 3 google email address it checks. My response with NO NEW mail takes longer than my wife who receives 45 messages. Explain THAT

I am still having slow WiFi on iOS 11 on iPhone 6, iPhone 7, and iPad Air 2...but not on MacBook Pro nor AppleTV. All my devices used to work on the 5GHz ac band at 112 Mbps on iOS 10. After the iOS 11 updates only the iOS 11.x.x devices slowed to no more than 60 Mbps. However, when I brought the iOS 11.1.2 devices to my son’s house they ran at 100 Mbps. Hmmm...he has an Asus router and mine is a NetGear Nighthawk R7000. We are both configured for QoS Disabled and WMM enabled. All othe combinations run even slower (Under 30 Mbps). BTW, my router‘s connection to internet is tested by router (Ookla Speedtest) at 112 Mbps, so it’s not an ISP issue. I have tried all the suggestions from this thread, except reset iPhone to factory new setting(forget everything), but I have tried reset network settings several times, as well as restart router. Something has definitely changed in iOS 11 either in WiFi handshakes or sensitivity to background thread interference that affects communication speed with some, but not all, routers. You would think that Apple, with its huge financial and technical wealth, would test their cash cow devices with at least the most popular current routers...NetGear, eh?

Same problems here...

i get 112 Mbps on my NetGear Nighthawk R7000 with latest (12/1/2017) firmware connected to...

...macbook pro, macOS 10.13.1, Wired gigabit Ethernet and WiFi 5MHz AC

...AppleTV, latest tvOS, WiFi 5MHz AC

But get only 60 Mbps on my NetGear Nighthawk R7000 5MHz WiFi AC connected to...

...iPad Air 2 on iOS 11.2

...iPhone 6 on iOS 11.2

...iPhone 7 on iOS 11.2

—BUT, all 3 devices got 112 Mbps on ios 10 !!!

But when visiting 3 other homes, these same iOS 11.2 devices got 100+Mbps on other routers, e.g. Asus and possibly others. So the problem definitely started with iOS 11 and affects some routers (latest firmware) but not others.

Apple...here’s another case study for your current development process review. Please fix It.

Read this:Is Apple Slowing Down Old iPhones? Questions and Answers - The New York Times

TL:DR (IMHO) - Kinda. It's bigger than journalists even know how to write about. And it's not just Apple. It's the time we are in. Agile killed the Waterfall Model, the larger more real question is; Does this hurt craftsmanship?

Speed, Affordability, Quality. Pick two...

Anywayz, if you're still here...continue reading:

It's something to do with WiFi hardware within the devices, the OS (iOS11) and lastly, relies heavily 3rd Party App Developers working frantically to understand the nature that is iOS11 or lack thereof (imho). I've literally tried everything in my power to get videos and motion stuff (large Data requests at once) to work properly on various unnamed apps. Rebuilt iOS fresh, Reset Network Settings, tried different WiFi configurations, Changed Auth. Protocols, Yada, Yada, Etc. Etc. I've even replaced my WiFi Routers in the house with 3 different ones so far. Have sat next to them, testing with 40Mhz, 80Mhz, 160Mhz (Don't even recommend going here whatsoever) channel bands on 5Ghz & 2.4Ghz.

Fact is: Videos and certain large chunks of data transfer continue to chunk and stop, when utilizing WiFi. (You can literally turn of WiFi during this time of testing and everything goes smooth so long as you get a solid LTE connection where you are testing)

I've tested this with my Son's iPhone 6 Plus, my Wife's iPhone 6 Plus, My iPhone 7 Plus, iPad Air 2 and now even with my iPhone X. If you have an iPhone X and you don't mind helping, please test this yourself. I've tried GA release of iOS11 and currently testing with iOS11 Public Beta 11.2.5 R2.

Ensure your phone is on WiFi (Test both 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz)

1. Open Instagram

2. Go to the search option (magnifying glass)

3. I used this hashtag but you can get creative: #justvideos

4. Get a random video so it brings up the scroll down UI to show your results as you scroll down.

5. Watch videos begin to slow down and stop loading (or not load from the start)

Fun Part:

6. Disable WiFi from your Control Panel

7. Go back to the same list (So long as you have a solid Cellular connection)

8. Videos load much much smoother with little to no load times

Lastly, as far as my internet connection is concerned, I utilize fiber and can see 600Mb to 900Mb consistently on all my other devices outside of these mobile OS Apple products. My recent iPhone X pull just now saw 485Mb (which is totally acceptable to me - Granted my Mac Book Pro can see 600-800Mb with no issues all day. Not complaining about this.)

With that said, it still remains a mystery for me but it's manageable at this point. (kinda gave up really) I'm done troubleshooting this as I work on this stuff for a living and would rather just go be with family, outside or play video games (you know hardwired stuff, lolz)...

Here's to hoping it gets better.

Good luck and Merry Christmasukahkwanawhateverurn2...
