ios 11 slow wifi speeds

Updated my 6s and now my WiFi speeds are at a crawl mostly under 25mbs in the same room as a laptop getting 75mbs download speeds.

I’ve done a Forced Restart

Toggled WiFi on/off

Forgotten WiFi networks

Reset WiFi networks

Turned off Location Services

Etc etc etc

The only thing I have done is reset the entire phone 📱

Anyone else reporting these issues?

Seeing inconsistent WiFi speeds just like you on our 70mbs connection, with both our iPhones. (7+, 6+)

Our iPads are fine. (iPad 10.5, iPad Air 2)

I’ve tried everything, including restore through iTunes as new iPhone. This never happened on 10.3.3.

Think there’s a bug in WiFi. It’s frustrating. Did you figure anything out?

I too have have a similar problem which I noticed back in Sept 2017 and only appears to have gotten worse. I have updaetd to 11.1.2 and I see sporactic swings in Download/Upload speeds. This is especially noticable while making phone calls and then doing speed tests. Whenever, I am on a phone (iphone 7 w/Hotspot tethering) my speedtests for Uploads is under 1Mbps. When off the phone it's like 5 Mbps. Download speeds don't seem to be aweful. I use my iPhone as my WiFi hotspot for work as I work from home. As of sometime in Sept I noticed poor performance and as mentioned has gotten worse. I have contacted Verizon and they see nothing at their end and say my phone is configured properly. I set the Cellular data to Data Only and not have Voice over LTE. When I did this and made a phone call my internet connections wouldn't work. So I had to turn it back to Voice and Data over LTE. I think some sort of priority or as mentioned here in the thread a software update has hi-jacked the WiFi behavior.
Just can 't seem to figure this out. It a corporate phone so I don't want to wipe it. Does anyone have a true resolution. I don't have a home router that I am going through so those who have an ISP home service with routers are a different case scenario than myself who is using just the iPhone for both a Hotspot and Voice. Anyone else have a solution or the same issue using just the iPhone as their hotspot and notice that speeds drop while on a phone call?
Hope this information helps others too!

I also have same issue on my iphone 6. Its only happen after update ios 11. The worst is my ip6 wifi disconnected. I try to connect again (manually) by choose the wifi network. Then it ask the password. When i key in the password it keep popup “incorrect password” and “unable to connect to network”. After few times try, i leave it (after 3@4 hours) it automatically connected. (At the moment, i cannot connect- already 2 hours).

My laptop@ other smartphone (except iphone ios 11) able to get up to 25mbps but my ip6 only can get 1mbps. Its really *****. Hope apple can fix this issue soonest. Its already months.

Read this:Is Apple Slowing Down Old iPhones? Questions and Answers - The New York Times

TL:DR (IMHO) - Kinda. It's bigger than journalists even know how to write about. And it's not just Apple. It's the time we are in. Agile killed the Waterfall Model, the larger more real question is; Does this hurt craftsmanship?

Speed, Affordability, Quality. Pick two...

Anywayz, if you're still here...continue reading:

It's something to do with WiFi hardware within the devices, the OS (iOS11) and lastly, relies heavily 3rd Party App Developers working frantically to understand the nature that is iOS11 or lack thereof (imho). I've literally tried everything in my power to get videos and motion stuff (large Data requests at once) to work properly on various unnamed apps. Rebuilt iOS fresh, Reset Network Settings, tried different WiFi configurations, Changed Auth. Protocols, Yada, Yada, Etc. Etc. I've even replaced my WiFi Routers in the house with 3 different ones so far. Have sat next to them, testing with 40Mhz, 80Mhz, 160Mhz (Don't even recommend going here whatsoever) channel bands on 5Ghz & 2.4Ghz.

Fact is: Videos and certain large chunks of data transfer continue to chunk and stop, when utilizing WiFi. (You can literally turn of WiFi during this time of testing and everything goes smooth so long as you get a solid LTE connection where you are testing)

I've tested this with my Son's iPhone 6 Plus, my Wife's iPhone 6 Plus, My iPhone 7 Plus, iPad Air 2 and now even with my iPhone X. If you have an iPhone X and you don't mind helping, please test this yourself. I've tried GA release of iOS11 and currently testing with iOS11 Public Beta 11.2.5 R2.

Ensure your phone is on WiFi (Test both 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz)

1. Open Instagram

2. Go to the search option (magnifying glass)

3. I used this hashtag but you can get creative: #justvideos

4. Get a random video so it brings up the scroll down UI to show your results as you scroll down.

5. Watch videos begin to slow down and stop loading (or not load from the start)

Fun Part:

6. Disable WiFi from your Control Panel

7. Go back to the same list (So long as you have a solid Cellular connection)

8. Videos load much much smoother with little to no load times

Lastly, as far as my internet connection is concerned, I utilize fiber and can see 600Mb to 900Mb consistently on all my other devices outside of these mobile OS Apple products. My recent iPhone X pull just now saw 485Mb (which is totally acceptable to me - Granted my Mac Book Pro can see 600-800Mb with no issues all day. Not complaining about this.)

With that said, it still remains a mystery for me but it's manageable at this point. (kinda gave up really) I'm done troubleshooting this as I work on this stuff for a living and would rather just go be with family, outside or play video games (you know hardwired stuff, lolz)...

Here's to hoping it gets better.

Good luck and Merry Christmasukahkwanawhateverurn2...

I have found two fixes for the slow WiFi issue of iOS 11:

1: switch to a 5Ghz WiFi network instead of 2.4Ghz

2: if you don’t have a 5Ghz option, then turn Bluetooth off.

Both of these put my 6s’ WiFi download speed back to where it should be. The speed was cut in half by iOS 11 and it took me days to figure out the root cause and to identify these two fixes.

Hopefully Apple will fix this issue soon. Good luck.

Sorry, neither trick worked for me.

I have 5GHz WiFi and Bluetooth is off...my Speedtest is 60Mbps down on my iPad Air 2, iPad Pro (latest), iPhone 6, and iPhone 7...all with latest iOS. That is exactly 50% of what it was with iOS 10 as well as macOS High Sierra and TvOS (latest versions). However, when I visit relatives, I get 100+Mbps on their routers (e.g. Asus)...but my NetGear R7000 Nighthawk serves 100+Mbps only for macOS, tvOS, and gigabit Ethernet....not iOS 11.

Anyone else with a NetGear router slowing (or not) down?

Jan 1, 2018 11:26 AM in response to JBinHJ

That’s odd. I didn’t realize this was impacting newer devices using iOS 11.

Using Speedtest while on my 2.4Ghz network: With Bluetooth ON my download speed is ~38 mbps. With Bluetooth OFF my download speed is ~96 mbps.

On the 5Ghz band my download speed is a consistent 116 mbps.

IPhone 6s on the latest iOS 11 release.

I have a D-Link router provided by Optimum, my cable provider. I’m generally happy with it and it doesn’t regularly flake out and need a reboot like my old Netgear router did. So I haven’t attempted to upgrade to something ‘better’ since I think the odds are even that I’d wind up in worse shape.

I hope this helps.

Hello!

I’ ve had this issue since a while back, almost no speed on my 5GHz Wi-Fi at home, but full speed on 2.4 GHz. Today I noticed my iPhone had changed name to “IPhone” rather than what it use to be called (Henriks iPhone), when I changed back to my normal name on the device I now get full speed on my 5G Wi-Fi again! Maybe a upgrade a few weeks back accidentally changed the name on my iPhone, but still it is strange that it affects Wi-Fi speed...

This is happening for me as well -- both on my iPhone 7 Plus with iOS 11, my wife's iPhone 6 with iOS 11, and now both of our iPhone X's have the same issue!

On our phones, WiFi speed is about 6mbps download. We're standing right next to the iMac which is getting 75mbps download.

I've tried everything --- no luck. It seems like the phones are the only pieces of hardware in the house that have this issue -- why???

I must withdraw my last post, since a day later I again have the problem again, with speeds around 5MBit via 5Ghz Wi-Fi, but close to 100Mbit via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. But I will give a try to check the Wi-Fi-traffic this week via a sniffer to see what could be wrong, I got a tip from a colleague (I work within Swedish telecom) to see what capabilities the iPhone tell the router it has, if it tells it only to use lowest possible speed instead of highest possible.

Jan 8, 2018 12:09 PM in response to Miltex

So it seems that iOS is having some major issues when it comes to Firewalls / Proxies (just personal opinion) - What I've noticed now is that our iOS devices are much happier on a more "open" network within our internal LAN here at home. I'm going to build a separate wireless LAN for them versus utilizing my existing LAN for my other devices. From what I can tell, they run much faster so long as FW's aren't running on the given access point you are utilizing for said iOS devices. (Not cool and much more prevalent in iOS11, it seems. Hoping iOS11.3 somehow addresses this.)

Here's some wishful thinking on iOS11.3 if you're curious: http://www.redmondpie.com/ios-11.3-beta-1-download-expected-release-date-feature s-more/

With that said, here's my plan for now:

Incoming WAN connection to Gateway (FW Enabled)

LAN1 with my normal security/stand-alone FW also enabled (WiFi/Ethernet Capable) - Devices outside of iOS Devices

LAN2 (WiFi 2.4Ghz / 5Ghz) - Only for iOS Devices (FW disabled on local AP but will still utilize FW at Gateway)

DNS / IP's / Routing obviously at your own desire...

Good luck everyone,

Devin

I know what the issue is. And sadly nobody can fix it. When Apple rolled out that software that allows Low Power Mode, it’s screwed up a whole bunch of stuff on phones. Slow down performance, WiFi speed‘s as well as throttled performance of applications loading and closing as well as refreshing in the background. It’s not just a battery issue that needs to be addressed, Apple has intently forced us to update our phones in order to make us think that our phones are obsolete and unusable. I was running iOS 9 before I updated to iOS 10.2.1 and my Wi-Fi worked outstandingly perfect. The moment I updated my Wi-Fi connection Was forced to a slow crawl. I have to sit in the same room with my WiFi close to 2 feet away from it before I can get a full strength signal. If I walk even has so far as 12 steps away I immediately drop to one bar. Let’s not talk about walking 20 steps away; at that point in time I’m forced to stay in 4G/LTE mode. After I’ve updated to iOS 10.2.1 I was forced to pay for an unlimited data plan because the Wi-Fi at home does not ******* work.
