Email slow to load in mail app with iOS 11

After updating to iOS 11 my emails are taking a long time to load after they come in. The preview shows, but when I select the new message it just says loading for a long time. I am even having to leave the message and come back a few times.

This is on my exhange account with push.

Anyone else seeing this?

This for sure would be the problem. I use go daddy and I have a few email accounts on IMAP. My work one has many folders and takes forever to download while my other personal ones with hardly any folders...downloads new emails fast. This appears to be exactly what the issue is....it reads all the folders before downloading. I have a lot of GB's in folders on my work email. No wonder it takes so long to download my new emails on my phone. I have been afraid to download High Sierra in case the same is true on my iMac. Once I download on my iMac the next time I ask for mail on my phone...it downloads right away.

I deleted my mail account on my phone and then added it back in and it's a tad faster but not like it used to be. I notice that I don't have an update available yet for High Sierra on my Mac and I won't be updating it right away. I'll let everyone else report the bugs and I'll just wait. Plus it will render my 16-bit photoshop plugins useless. 😟

And my VIP sound alerts are way LATE in notifying me that an important person has emailed me 😟 I did call Apple Care tech support and report this, but they are in denial. And they don't even have the professionalism to take a look here, on THEIR forum, at THIS post. I offered to email them a link to this post - nope, they are NOT interested! I'm tempted to return my brand new iMac - in protest...

I have about 10 email accounts (IMAP) with hundreds of thousands of emails that worked fine with iOS10. But it looks like iOS11 introduces some UI/UX issues with the new way that the Mail app checks IMAP folders. From what I can see, the main change, and possibly the root of the problem, is that Mail adds new messages as it sees them instead of all at once after it visits all folders.

Just download and install the outlook app.

I’ve been using it for a month now and it’s very nice. Once installed and opened go into settings and change it to your preferences, for me I wanted a delete on swipe and now threads. It also tried to organise multiple accounts but you can set to just show all. This app can have gmail accounts and others added, even better it keeps attachments at the top of the email. Hooray:-)

So there's over 400 people, in this thread alone, reporting slowness with Mail, including Exchange accounts! Imagine how many thousands, or tens of thousands, of users are affected? I work in IT for over 30 years, and I know for every customer that takes the time to report an issue, there are multitudes just suffering quietly! Probably because when they have contacted Apple in the past, Apple was in denial... Apple - OPEN your EYES - you have a problem and it's NOT yet fixed even in iOS 11.0.3. Fix it!!!! At least have the professional courtesy to update all of us PAYING customers as to the status. Don't bury your heads in the sand...

Is there a place on Apple's site where they track known bugs, reported bugs and the status of each? Or do we just have to hope Apple has little sticky notes somewhere tracking all this insanity?

OK its much better with the certificate on the phone but still can be slow, so I took some other advice from this thread and downloaded Outlook for iPhone, selected "not Office 365" and did the advanced setup with the same details the iPhone's mail is using. Chalk and cheese 🙂. You can open the body message for any mail instantly on Outlook and then try the same thing with the iPhone's mail app and wait and wait....

Since loading the certificate, it has been much quicker for me but when I get out of range of WiFi, even when I'm on 4G with loads of bars [and can prove I have fast access on 4G with Net Analyzer] its as if the iPhone's email app has not picked up the new route and I'm back to waiting and waiting...

No problem though with Outlook, so it looks like the Apple mail app is still the issue.

I give up on Apple. Clearly they either don't care about business users, or are for whatever reason unable to fix this bug in a timely way. I suppose they think that we're willing to sit for a cumulative fifteen or twenty minutes a day waiting for each email we open to populate.

I have installed the free Microsoft Outlook app on my iPhone. It was painless and doesn't have the problem this thread discusses. It's interface is almost identical to Apple's, so it was no trouble to learn. And frankly, I like some of it's features more than Apple's iPhone email app.

Glad to be done wasting my time waiting for Apple to fix this problem or even simply acknowledge it!

Good riddance.

Life's too short, and we're all to busy to suffer because a vendor is fails on their promise to respect their customers.

It is absolutely ridiculous. After upgrading to 11.0.3 on iphone 6, my email has become like the way we use to read emails over dial-up 20 years ago. Thanks to apple for taking us back to stone-age days again.

This is a classic Apple "trick" by upgrading to latest OS, you basically make any our existing device useless and force yourself to buy a new one and they don't care about customer sentiment because they always have more innocents following into their trap.

I am putting an end to this for ever. I am never buying iPhone anymore because I don't see Apple caring about care about their usability any more (which has gotten only worse after demise of Steve Jobs and being run by monkeys who are only doing things to please Wall Street to beat #s).

I too have just now abandoned Apple's Mail program on my iPhone 6s in favor of Microsoft's Outlook app for iOS. OMG - what a difference in performance!!! I have hundreds of folders, and Outlook for iOS displays anything in the blink of an eye. No more waiting minutes for individual messages to fully display 🙂 Shame on you Apple for botching up your Mail program so badly - and not having the decency/professionalism to respond to posts like this - where HUNDREDS have indicated they too are affected. And if hundreds acknowledged the problems with Mail in this one post alone, you can bet there are probably tens of thousands of affected users! Apple - get your act together !!
