Email slow to load in mail app with iOS 11

After updating to iOS 11 my emails are taking a long time to load after they come in. The preview shows, but when I select the new message it just says loading for a long time. I am even having to leave the message and come back a few times.

This is on my exhange account with push.

Anyone else seeing this?

Hello there kane_TO,

If I understand correctly you are able to receive the emails just fine, but it takes longer than usual to actually view the contents after updating to iOS 11. Let's start by forcing the Mail app to close with this article:

How to force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Then restart the pone and test it out again:

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If that does not resolve the issue, we should next remove the account from the phone and re add it:

If you can’t send or receive emails on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Remove your email account and set it up again

  1. On your computer, sign in to your email provider’s website. Make sure that all of your email is there or make sure that your email is saved somewhere other than your iOS device.
  2. On your iOS device, go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
  3. Tap the email account that you want to remove.
  4. Tap Delete Account.
  5. Add your account again.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities, let us know how that goes.

Yes.i pull down to check for new email and it says Checking for Mail and it stays on that a long Time then I wait and the screen times out and even when I sign back in 30 seconds later it’s still st the same point checking for Mail. Very very slow since I installed iOS 11. Deleted all of my extra email accounts in the hopes it would load faster and no change whatsoever. Relieved to see this is a bigger issue that Apple will need to address and not just my phone.

I can confirm. Slow calendar as well.

To all of the people trying to help pointing to network issues or anything specific to Exchange - thank you but 1) I do not have any exchange account anywhere, and 2) my network is very fast and reliable, and one user with an iPad too old to accept the iOS 11 (or 10) update has no problem, nor does our one Android user. Email (and calendar) for them is nice and speedy. And again, looking at the WiFi, I don't see iOS doing anything or waiting for any response - it's just sitting idle spinning away.

I also am having the same problem. Very frustrating! Clearly some issue in mail. I have multiple accounts and my work one which is the most important is the one that hangs and the wheel spins...while stating checking for mail forever. Again in OS Sierra mail, I have no problem downloading emails. My secondary email in ios11 downloads right away though. Again I care more about my main email. Ughhhh. This has been happening since up-grading to ios11. It does it on my iPad too. So clearly an ios11 bug or problem. I have tried deleting all email accounts, deleting the mail icon, re-starting and finally re-setting. This is a big problem. I even called go daddy my email server and they said everything is fine on their end which I though so since I can download on my desktop. Apple please address this issue ASAP. I need to get my business email while out of office!

Yes definitely don’t bother deleting app it takes ages to re sync and doesn’t fix it. I haven’t a clue why the certificate fixes the issue, but it works and I’m back to full speed emails.

I will add I have since returned back to the outlook app for email as it works very well and keeps attachments at the top of emails and not at the bottom as is the case with the iOS email app. Don’t know why Apple haven’t changed this because if you get a long mail or group of mails it’s a real pain having to scroll to the bottom. Probably should mention this on a new discussion but as Apple state they don’t look at communities then probably no point.

Yes I concur- it’s a lot better with the certificate but sometimes it goes back to agonisingly slow “open email body” even when the content is small. I think I’ve noticed this more today as I’ve been out and about on mobile connectivity rather than Wi-fi but have 5 bars and a 4G connection. I ran a speed test on the mobile network and it said about 5Mbps when the mail app was trying (forever) to open the email body.

So my feeling is it is still broke, less broke now the certificates are in place but broke is broke !

Fix it please Applr

I did find a post that says you have to go into Outlook iOS Settings (menu option only shows when Mail is the focus - why?), click on your Exchange account, then move the "Save Contacts" slider to ON. It then prompts me whether to save 200 contacts to my iPhone - I click on <Save to My iPhone>. A message "Saving 200 contacts..." displays briefly. I then go to Phone app and there are 0 Contacts 😟 Not sure what I should do, other than throw my phone 🙂
