Voice control problem over bluetooth

Hi,

after updating to IOS 11 i've lost ability to dial contacts throught voice control over bluetooth devices. We don't have siri in our language, but voice control worked well when I wanted to call someone (when I'm driving a car or motorcycle).

When I engage voice control without bt device connected it works. (I say "call Jane", and phone says "calling jane").

When I try to do the same in my car voice control enages but doesn't do anything. (I say "call Jane" and phone just makes two beeps and disconnects. Those beeps are different from beeps that are made when no action is made after activating voice control.) Symptom is like it hears what I'm saying but does nothing.

The key for anyone posting in this thread is to contact the device manufacturer and find out when/if they will be releasing a firmware update to be compatible with iOS 11. Just because you have the latest firmware doesn't mean you have a version that is compatible with iOS 11 and has been tested. And no, this is not just an Apple/iOS issue. If you search Android forums the exact same thing happens on updates for Android devices as well. The exact same instructions are reiterated there in that you must contact the device manufacturer. Very rarely will an update to iOS or Android's OS will fix these type of issues. It's up to the device manufacturer.

Hi,

I have this issue as well. My iphone 7 came with ios 11.0 preinstalled and it worked fine with my car bluetooth (Volvo XC60 2014). Once I kept updating towards 11.1.1 (my current firmware) I have been experiencing the voice control problem over bluetooth with every new update.

One thing that I haven't seen being discussed by any of the previous posts is that in my case, my phone recognizes my voice when I use voice calls over the car's bluetooth. I know this because I can see the name of the person I have asked iphone to call on the phone's screen for a flash of a second. The name then disappears before the phone confirms the phone number I asked it to call. To me, this further bolsters the suspicion of the community here that this is an ios bug.

Hopefully, we have some news about this.

Cheers,

Pavlos

Hi,

thank You for Your reply. I've already did points 1,2,4,5 before writing here. Problem occurs on every hands-free device I have.

Right now I've tried point 3 - still the same. Also I did the same test on my friends iPhone SE with iOS 11 - it's the same problem.

Apple broke something in iOS 11 and did not make enough tests.

I too have the same problem with a Jabra Freeway. I've dropped the bluetooth device, restarted the phone, and paired to the device after resetting the device. Submitted problem to Jabra while using iPhone 6 running iOS 11.0.2, problem still exists with 11.0.3. Also updated firmware from 5.5.0 to 5.7.0 on Jabra Freeway to see if that fixes the problem - not. No issues with an iPhone 6 still running iOS 10.3.3.

BT interface to music seems to work, i.e., can play, skip, stop. Problem is with entering voice control (home button hold action) via bluetooth. The phone ends the connection before I can even issue a "call" command.

I have the same problem on iPhone SE after iOS11 update. Now v3 and it's still the same. Voice control from my Alpine UTE BT-045 in car and Interphone F3MC in my motorcycle helmet works only once-twice from restarting my phone and i noticed it's using microphone in phone - not in BT device when i'm talking to it. And after I said "call to..." it's not using bt device speaker to say "calling to..." - it says it through phone speaker while same call is working via bt device. After 1-2 times used i need to restart phone, cause then it makes 2 beeps after voice commanded and does nothing! Dear Apple! Using my bluetooth devices was crutial to me while I was choosing iPhone over Android devices so please make it work quick!!

I have noted this same behavior when using the car bluetooth on a Mazda CX-5 vs. using a Jabra Freeway. I passed the observation on to Apple in the case notes for case #100314789679. It seems to be a case of which bluetooth profile is being negotiated between the devices. Apple did contact me on the case and requested a fourth round of diagnositic information; this time asking for a video of the action sequence and phone screen showing the problem being replicated. Not sure if there will ever be resolution, since the problem has been isolated, is repeatable, and is unchanged since the 11.0 roll-out as documented in this thread.

I upgraded to 11.2.1 and still the problem persists on my iPhone 7...and a new side effect has appeared again when the phone is connected to the car's Bluetooth and voice recognition is initiated. When I dictate a response to a text message (i.e. through voice recognition in IOS) and press ''Send'' to send the message, the voice recognition function does not terminate automatically. Instead, my car's LCD screen shows that a phone call is in progress that counts the time period since I initiated voice recognition to dictate my text message). This only stops if I re-initiate voice recognition (through a persisting press of the home button) and then terminate it manually by pressing the home button.

This is now becoming very disappointing.

Apple is going even further with this case - in first beta version of iOS 11.3 there's no possibility for use of voice control even WITHOUT bluetooth.

They certainly forgets, that most of countries doesn't have Siri in own language! And forgets most about disabled (eg. blind) people living in that countries - that's disappointing and really sad.

This would really be bad news. I'm a conscious non-user of Siri, simply because I'm quite unwilling to share my life with Apple. This is especially true for data on whom I call etc.

Simply disabeling voice control would mean adding new pressure on clients to share their personal data. Not the way to go, Apple.
