Smart Keyboard not working since ios11.

Prior to ios11, the Keyboard was throwing up intermittent annoying warning messages saying it was an unsupported device, but since ios11, it is not even detected. I have tried reboot both with it connected and not connected. Can anyone help please?

Hi francis efromwakefield,

I understand that you've recently been having trouble with your Smart Keyboard connecting to your iPad Pro. It sounds like this started prior to updating and since updating the iPad is unable to detect the keyboard at all. I know it's important to be able to depend on your accessories and I'd like to help. You mention you've tried restarting the iPad with the keyboard attached and not attached, however the Smart Keyboard and iPad Pro need to be in the "Type" position when you perform this step. I'd recommend reviewing the following information:

If your iPad Pro doesn't detect your Smart Keyboard or you see an "Accessory not supported" alert on your iPad Pro, make sure there's no debris or plastic covering on the Smart Connector pins on the keyboard or the Smart Connector on the iPad Pro. Also, try these steps:

  1. Make sure that your iPad Pro and Smart Keyboard are in the Type position.
  2. Remove the Smart Keyboard from your iPad Pro.
  3. Restart your iPad Pro.
  4. Reconnect the Smart Keyboard.
Use your Smart Keyboard with iPad Pro

If you've followed those exact steps and you don't see anything that could be blocking the Smart Connector pins, are you able to test the Smart Keyboard with a different iPad?

Best Regards.

I've got a similar but different issue, (ipad pro 12.9) when my keyboard became unresponsive i at first removed it and then replaced it which usually got it working again. I then found out that lifting the ipad into a vertical position started it working again. Now this morning i removed the ipad from the keyboard to work with it on my lap and the on screen keyboard was on screen but greyed out and the screen was unresponsive. A reboot cleared the problem but what is causing these issues? Only Apple knows!

I have to say that the unresponsive issue is beginning to become tiresome. Anyone else feel that Apple missed a trick by not having the keyboard backlit?

I used the Apple online chat support and the support person suggested I wait for a software update and also sent me a document on how to clean the connectors. When I asked about software issues He said, “Yes we expect it to be resolved in a future update, however its not affecting the performance of the keyboard is it? As I’d treat that as a separate issue to troubleshoot. And as for going back to iOS 10, at this point its not possible.” This is the first I’ve heard that they know that its a software issue. I was trying to explain that yes the keyboard works fine when I can get it to connect to the iPad but that the “accessory not supported“ pop-up occurs daily and is difficult to get around and that this never occurred for me in iOS 10. He wasn’t on the same page and kept trying to guide to towrdas the connectors being dirty even though he admitted it was going to be resolved in a future shoforward update and even said I should wait for that.

My 1st gen 12.9 iPad pro worked flawless until about 4 months ago then the “device not supported“ message would pop up. For 2 months the keyboard has not worked at all, I have replaced with a new and nothing. My Logitech keyboard does work just fine but it’s heavy and I prefer the Apple keyboard for travel. Apple has stopped contacting me for a fix I am not sure they know what to do. I guess I will wait patently until they figure this out one day.

I agree - I have had the same issue. Example, today alone, I have rebooted my iPad 3 times before 9 am to get my keyboard to work.

I love and use my iPad Pro (12.9") for almost everything I do on a daily basis. I'm exactly the kind of person who uses my iPad as my personal/dominant computer. Not being able to use my external keyboard via the Smart Connector (which is seemingly the only type of accessory that takes advantage of the Smart Connector right now) is a major hit to my productivity.

Update : 2017iPad Pro gen 2

Purchased new keyboard - worked once for few minutes - then flat nothing. Used logitech keyboard for few days.

Tried original iPad pro Gen 1 - works on new keyboad , hmm odd. Old key board also works on Gen 1 iPad .

Updated to 11.2.6

Tried new keyboard - still doesn’t work on Gen 2 iPad , out of frustration with using logitech keyboard thought to try old original keyboard - now it works ! In fact typing this on it.

So I have a brand new keyboard that will only work on a gen 1 ipad pro - but now my old 2016 keyboard works fine with my gen 2 ipad pro - no more accessory not found mesages or disconnects.

Compeletly baffled ~ next time back in the US will take new keyboard to a store and see if I can get an exchange or refund.

This is exactly what I'm seeing. On some, not all, WiFi networks, connecting to the network will cause the keyboard strokes to no longer be recognized. Solution is to hard reboot (turn off and back on) and reconnect to the WiFi. Sometimes even that doesn't work and I need to reboot with the smart connector detached from the keyboard, connect to WiFi, and then attach to the keyboard. It's been going on for some time, but since it works OK at my home WiFi and for some of our connections at work, I've not pursued it further. But it is REALLY annoying.
