Smart Keyboard not working since ios11.

Prior to ios11, the Keyboard was throwing up intermittent annoying warning messages saying it was an unsupported device, but since ios11, it is not even detected. I have tried reboot both with it connected and not connected. Can anyone help please?

Hi francis efromwakefield,

I understand that you've recently been having trouble with your Smart Keyboard connecting to your iPad Pro. It sounds like this started prior to updating and since updating the iPad is unable to detect the keyboard at all. I know it's important to be able to depend on your accessories and I'd like to help. You mention you've tried restarting the iPad with the keyboard attached and not attached, however the Smart Keyboard and iPad Pro need to be in the "Type" position when you perform this step. I'd recommend reviewing the following information:

If your iPad Pro doesn't detect your Smart Keyboard or you see an "Accessory not supported" alert on your iPad Pro, make sure there's no debris or plastic covering on the Smart Connector pins on the keyboard or the Smart Connector on the iPad Pro. Also, try these steps:

  1. Make sure that your iPad Pro and Smart Keyboard are in the Type position.
  2. Remove the Smart Keyboard from your iPad Pro.
  3. Restart your iPad Pro.
  4. Reconnect the Smart Keyboard.
Use your Smart Keyboard with iPad Pro

If you've followed those exact steps and you don't see anything that could be blocking the Smart Connector pins, are you able to test the Smart Keyboard with a different iPad?

Best Regards.

That never works for me. I have to hold the mag strip down and rapidly connect and disconnect the iPad to the keyboard about 20 times and then when I see the on screen keyboard slide down I try command tab and it works most of the time. Sometimes it gets stuck on the switching apps and needs another reboot. It’s a mess really. I hope ios 12 fixes this issue because iOS 11 is a mess.

I can consistently replicate the issue on multiple WiFi connections that have splash screens. Visitor WiFi at both of my work offices as well as Starbucks. If there is no splash screen the keyboard continues to work. But as soon as I connect to a WiFi that pops up a confirm screen, the keyboard dies.

I will try the CMD-Tab to see if that works versus airplane mode-safari-hit OK To re-enable to the WiFi.

Ive called italian support over this issue.

Italy does not have a program replacement for smart keyboard. For the accuracy they have never been aware of this problem.

For italian support team: Il supporto Italiano non ha ancora attivato nessun programma di sostituzione delle smart keyword. Incredibilmente non hanno mai sentito parlare del problema.

I've installed 1.3 beta 4 without any result.

I think in Italy, Apple have been forced to respect the EU 2 year warranty for electronic goods. If your keyboard is less than 2 years old and is faulty, then it should be replaced under guarantee .

Aside from that ...

Has anyone with this problem since iOS11, tried a System Reset?

(Go: Settings/General/Reset/Reset All Settings) This isn’t such a big deal. You may need to re-enter some passwords, e.g. WiFi.

I've already called Apple and had my keyboard replaced. It didn't fix the issue. I'm having the issue where connecting to public WiFi that uses a splash screen causes the keyboard to stop working. Sometimes doing a cmd t on right before the screen comes up will allow it to keep working, but that's hit or miss and most of the time only a full reboot of the iPad fixes it. I've had the issue on 2 different iPads and 2 different Smart Keyboards, and after 11.2.5, the same thing started happening with a Bluetooth Logitech Keys To Go keyboard as well.

It feels like there are multiple issues in this thread. Some are getting error codes which may benefit from a new keyboard, while others (including me) are just having connectivity issues when we connect to a WiFi that requires additional credentials. In my case, I can so easily work around it with a CMD TAB sequence. My issue seems more software related, but perhaps I am wrong. Guess I will call Apple also to see if a new keyboard will fix my issue.

I ended up selling my iPad Pro last week to a friend who didn't need the keyboard. I still have a Air 2 and Mini. I will look at what is coming in the next few months and hopefully some items are fixed by then.

Its been a frustrating 6 months and have not heard from Apple on my open ticket in 4 weeks and ball was in their court to get back to me. Still a loyal Apple customer just taking a break from the pro.

I FOUND THE ANSER< the CLUE, the TIP THAT WORKS!

Having problems as you all and posted it, along with working WITH apple reps and their programming teams till they did not respond and emails returned...but found the key.

THis and ONLY this method works and steps skipped didn’t;

from POWER OFF:

1) Turn power on in keypad position and log into wifi

2: POWER DOWN (not turn off/sleep)

3) REPOWER UP again with keypad in position and log into WiFi if not logged in and should work.

when i did not log into wifi at first and just did the powering off and on it doesn’t work but have to log in twice.

after a year of problems with them and many visits, this is the only thing that’s worked but ...it’s not ideal and APPLE, you need to fix this!

I have to jump through these steps at every coffee shop i stop at daily. WIFI was the thing kicking off the keyboard, signing onto wife. Worked otherwise and at home. I thought it may be Bluetooth related, thinking the keyboard was bluetooth and that sometimes when I clicked that on, the keyboard came on...but then steps have been doing it for me FAITHFULLY for the past 6 weeks and i am on my 2nd iPad and 4th keyboard!

Mar 10, 2018 2:02 AM in response to stefano53

They had me power down and resign in after powering back up but i found that i had to sign in BEFORE powering down...the steps i mentioned and so this has worked for the past 7 weeks faithfully, albeit a pain in the a__. I hope you find out what works. Their programmers are on it but nothing satisfactory to the masses. I would still call them direct and get a tech person to KEEP working with you because they all seemed to say that they've not heard much problems.

whatever works is great! that was one of the things they had me do, as the connection can be a design/builder flaw also. switching to wifi has an internal issue also. They had a series of hoops to go through to check flaws...i still want a BUYERS SATISFACTION taken care of, to NOT have to go through any of these but after getting my 4th keyboad and STILL have issues like not doing well to copy and paste from url/chosen text options, i'm sure it's a program issue and yours may be the keyboard itself so go back to apple store and get a new one while you can.

I updated IOS 11. I plugged the Smart keyboard and appeared a notice on my screen. "This accessory is not supporting by the device." After that i upgraded IOS 11.3 Beta 1,2,3,4 problem is not changed. I saw same notice every time but keyboard is working. I informed IOS team i sent report on beta program several times.

This morning i saw IOS 11 Beta 5 is available for install. I was glad to see that and thought that the problem would be solved. I updated my IPad Pro 12.9 inches IOS 11.3 Beta 5 But after this update my keyboard did not work at all. Why is not a simple problem solved by Apple?

Apple wants to sell us a new smart keyboard? Because my keyboard is 1st generation for IPad Pro.

I began to think that Applied was following policies that would even move away loyal customers like us!

Really, If Apple thinks so; it was time to throw away all apple-branded devices and switch to Android.
