Smart Keyboard not working since ios11.

Prior to ios11, the Keyboard was throwing up intermittent annoying warning messages saying it was an unsupported device, but since ios11, it is not even detected. I have tried reboot both with it connected and not connected. Can anyone help please?

Hi francis efromwakefield,

I understand that you've recently been having trouble with your Smart Keyboard connecting to your iPad Pro. It sounds like this started prior to updating and since updating the iPad is unable to detect the keyboard at all. I know it's important to be able to depend on your accessories and I'd like to help. You mention you've tried restarting the iPad with the keyboard attached and not attached, however the Smart Keyboard and iPad Pro need to be in the "Type" position when you perform this step. I'd recommend reviewing the following information:

If your iPad Pro doesn't detect your Smart Keyboard or you see an "Accessory not supported" alert on your iPad Pro, make sure there's no debris or plastic covering on the Smart Connector pins on the keyboard or the Smart Connector on the iPad Pro. Also, try these steps:

  1. Make sure that your iPad Pro and Smart Keyboard are in the Type position.
  2. Remove the Smart Keyboard from your iPad Pro.
  3. Restart your iPad Pro.
  4. Reconnect the Smart Keyboard.
Use your Smart Keyboard with iPad Pro

If you've followed those exact steps and you don't see anything that could be blocking the Smart Connector pins, are you able to test the Smart Keyboard with a different iPad?

Best Regards.

Revised edition of what? I'm on my third keyboard. The problem occurs when I first open the iPad to use the Smart Keyboard. Lately rocking the iPad Pro forward and backward makes the virtual keyboard disappear the the Smart Keyboard starts working. Once in a while that does not work so I disconnect, reconnect, rock forward, rock back. That usually takes care of it for the remaining time. I'm not going back to iOS 10. I'm currently running iOS 11.2.2. Apple needs to fix it and going back to iOS 10 is NOT a fix. And as for letting Apple know our feelings and thoughts, that is what this discussion site is for. They should be reading it. I've also reported the issue to the Apple Feedback site. And I suggested they read this discussion thread which is now up to 12 pages long.

Same issue by over 1500 Apple users who logged in and posted. That should raise flags with Tim Cook and Apple Programmers, but other more pressing issues are at hand. I am typing on the iPad Pro scren 📺 with many typos b/c the Apple “Smart‘ Keyboard is no longer recognized. The iPad Pro is useless to me as a computer without the keyboard. Waiting on IOS update to fix this glitch.

I have been having this issue and am currently running 11.something new. I have read through the posts and have tried restarting the device, no dice.

Contacted Apple support and got an answer to the effect that the keyboard is not an apple device and since it is not an Apple device they will not support it. Makes sense on why the issue may not be getting full support here on this forum or when people call. I do know that Apple does not know who made the device under their name since it is named the Apple Smart Keyboard...kinda confusing.

Apple, can we get the name of the supplier, manufacturer, contractor, or elves that made the keyboard so we can start getting a resolution? Or, stand behind your “named” product and give the discussion some recognition beyond the usual IT “please turn the device off and on” or “is the device plugged in.”

Apologies if my grammar is off, high school diploma...

The SMART KEYBORD is fully supported by apple and so i’m Not sure who told you that but i have a guy working back and forth with me and developers, asking a ton of trouble shooting questions that are more detailed and recovering analytics at the exact time this happens and such. SO, after my 4th keyboard, these apple poeple who BUILD IT are working because they have heard this A LOT. My apple rep keeps in touch weekly as a go-between them and me and i hope it gets resolved soon but it also may be something with 11. THEY CANNOT FIND A CONSISTANCY TO NAIL DOWN THE EXACT ISSUE...but they are working on it so ...go back to apple.
and never appologize for your grammar! I have a HS diploma and have been very successful in advertising and my clients love time so use Grammarly when you can (it’s on things like facebook now and most applications where they suggest spelling) and let that go. (My uncle used to say “screw all but 6 and save them for pal bearers”).

keep pursuing this. This keyboard is too expensive to toss to the side and i would like to ride them till it’s DONE (been having issues for 11 months now).

hi all. I actually thought this was a software. . Then I read one of the earlier posts which said they thought it was a connection issue. If you move your iPad a few millimeters to the left try to see if your keyboard works if it doesn’t try moving it a few millimeters to the right. This has worked for me every time now. Thus I think this is a manufacturing or specification failure issue.

280,000 people in California East Bay bought “smart‘ keyboards from Apple that are useless? AppleCare and Apple Techs have no solution. Thwe Keyboards don’t work on other iPad Pro’s - Ios is up to date + ReBooted & 3 lead Connections are clean. No luck and responses from apple seem like stalling until programmers finally look at this.

Did Tim Cook suggest massive refunds for this defective product? People are posting now, outside of Apple forums ~ dank memes on iFunny, video clips on YouTube, SnapChat etc. im writing TIS from my screen not keyboard with many typos vc the keyboard STILL doesn’t work. ((:

I had worked with this like you said and found it to be more consistent in “magicically getting it to work.” It still is not consistent in fixing the issue for me. The most consistent for me is using both hands thumb and forefinger to push the bottom of the iPad back and forth, causing the part of the keyboard attached to the iPad to rotate. Started that after noticing that the magnets do not hold completely, letting the force of the iPad rotate the contact points.

I had discarded Apple keyboard long back and am using Logotech Creative keyboard on my iPad Pro. So fat it worked beautifully. Today in a hotel when I logged into their wifi network, it stopped functioning. I had to disconnect, reboot and it strated to work again. What follows is the connection to keyboard connector gets disabled when you log on to a new wifi network. Hope this helps Apple geniouses to solve the problem so that I can move back to Apple keyboard!

I haven’t used my iPad Pro much recently but brought it with me today as I am stuck on a train for hours. I have had the same problem with the Smart Keyboard and have had to restart the iPad a number of times. I think this was an issue before but because I didn’t use it much, I didn’t think much about it. Doesn’t sound like apple are very clear what the problem is from the discussion above - and probably not worth trying to replace the keyboard I have since some people are saying they have had the same issue with a number of keyboards?

Jan 18, 2018 2:11 AM in response to stefano53

Have you tried tilting the iPad forwards, then back to it's normal position? IOW, 'rocking' it in the keyboard?

Alternatively, lifting it away from the keyboard at one side, then letting it 'clunk' back together again, with the magnets?

Sometimes I find I have to rock it back and forth 3 or 4 times for the software keyboard to disappear and the Smart Keyboard to be recognised. (This makes it seem like a hardware issue, but I expect it could also be software).

Just had my Apple smart keyboard replaced 2 days ago under the extended warranty and I and still getting the intermittent issue of the keyboard not responding. Although this time I am not getting the not supported accessory message, it just fails to type and the onscreen keyboard is displayed. If I lift the Ipad away from the keyboard while it’s still connected and place it back down onto the keyboard it will work again. I don’t need to do a hard reboot. However like the majority of comments in this thread I only started to experience this issue after the ios11 update.

Have any of you considered this? Maybe this is intentional. Maybe Apple wants you to use the iPad without the keyboard and is forcing us by inserting this “bug”. It is my conspiracy theory.

Every image of the iPad I’ve seen is of the stand alone tablet with someone using the pencil. Is this their way of moving us away from the keyboard?

I have resorted to using the touch screen without the keyboard attached but I still really need the keyboard for email and work.

Dear Apple... Please tell me I am wrong... and while you are at it... please fix the “bug”.

Jan 19, 2018 10:22 PM in response to francis efromwakefield

It’s not a “connection“ issue, shifting the magnetic connections 2mm left & right doesn’t work. Apple is intentionally delaying? It’s clearly a OS issue, just hasn’t been owned as such. Disappointed at response so far by Apple. Glitch in iOS update rendered my keyboard THAT I BOUGHT FROM APPLE - useless. YES to Apple for MacBook Pro Laptop & iMac, but NO to Ipad Pro, reviews of MS Surface look good.

Everbody in this chain is facing problems with Apple keyboard. They have supplied us a product which is not performing. I am using Logitech keyboard as the one supplied by Apple is useless to me. Why don't we all join hands and give a level notice to Apple as they have not neither publicly acknowledged the problem nor given any solution. All we get is replacements which also work erratically. This may shake them a bit to get this issue resolved.
