Weather widget not working on ios 11

Hi,

I have an iphone 7 plus. Since ios 11, the weather widget doesnt update at all. The weather app is not working fine either, I changed the location settings to only when you open the app, I tried also 'always on' but then that little arrow icon appears all the time in the top bar, so I refused.

With the location switch on 'when use the app' the widget should update if I open the app, but It doesnt. Sometimes the app itself doesnt update location or weather conditions.

Am I the only one?!?!

iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 11, null

So, I’m using an iPhone X, and I finally narrowed down this issue.

It’s literally the app not the localization or anything else like that.

In short, Apple culture has screwed this up. When you open the weather app, and don’t force close it because Apple says we don’t have to, the widget stops updating.

So here’s what I did and it was an instant widget update and because of this I think this is the most stupid bug I’ve ever figured out.

The widget isn’t updated, I tap it and the app shows me what the real temp is. I go to multitask mode to like I’d switch apps. As soon as I do a long press to allow force closing, and force close the weather app, the widget immediately updates.

This is a horrible implementation and probably is the same reason my Dark Sky stopped updating it.

Now it’s time for Apple to hopefully read this entry and do something about it. Otherwise it’s a useless widget.

I hit reply too soon.

I’m talking about webapps, a game to be specific.

In a world where TCP/IP and UDP are used for connecting services, I find it odd that two people can’t play the same game by the same developer against each other in the same ecosystem, Android specifically can’t play with Apple players, Fire device (android underneath) but there’s no connecting across these devices.

I know this went off topic. But there’s a reason I switched to the ecosystem I used to think the most restrictive as being the freedom for which I was looking all along.

In which case I've been quite lucky in that its only just affected me. What is annoying that since 11.2.6 my phone no longer automatically backs up to iCloud despite it being perfect previously and having the 50gb plan and fully meeting the backup parameters.

It will backup manually fine so I'm hoping 11.3 sorts these issues.

This patch did wonders for weather widget. But Fantastical now no longer populates after this widget fix.

I can only believe this is, as mentioned earlier, systemic.

Widgets for productivity are useless like this. Every swipe to widgets for anything but weather is now suspect due to the way this patch has effected the rest of the widgets.

This patch did not work for me (iphone7 / ios 11.3)

Location Services is set to : NEVER. (as a fixed city is used - this worked correct in earlier ios versions before the weather widget problem arose)

Widget flashes quickly upon swiping (updating ?) BUT data is not correct: wrong time (seems to be freezed, wrong temperature)

Already removed widget / city ... but no success.

SO i think the problem isn't solved yet.

Can't comment on that because never used a fixed location before, all I can say is Apple do have a habit of changing how things work sometimes when updating the OS, it's caught me out a few times and caused a little frustration along the way!

It wouldn't be so bad if they referred to any change in the update notes, but those always seem to be an exercise in minimisation so we are left to really discover things out for ourselves in the end, maybe you have just come across one of these occasions.

As with SiHancox, the Weather widgets on my Apple devices have worked unwaveringly since 11.3, after never working from 11.0 onwards. (Location Services set to "Always."). I wouldn't worry about that issue at the moment.

Regarding CarPlay, what can I say? If it works for you, then god-bless, and maybe iOS 11 will not be for you, because CarPlay has never worked properly in my 18 month-old Z51, on any version of iOS 10 or 11, and I regard it as #3 on the list of pathetic-running Apple software.

It’s certainly a gamble, which I consider we should not have to take, but the more complex OS’s become the higher the risk that something will “break”, Apple really do need to step up and take this problem in hand, possibly by slowing down releases and affording more testing time, but that’s just my view.

You do need to consider another point though, namely security, sticking with an old OS might not be the best from that perspective, so it comes down to priorities. Try posting a topic to see if anyone else has your device on 11.3 running CarPlay successfully in a similar vehicle, you just might get lucky 😉

Well, that "so-called fix" lasted all of 1/2 a day 😠 so decided to try a Restore, again will inform on how things go this time but from what others have fed back will not hold my breath.

Just to keep adding to others observations, I noticed the weather widget still "blinked" as though it was updating and the various hours/temp did change except the main headline temp and the "now" hour, those two remained "stuck". Also, spoke too soon regarding the iPad which also started showing this issue (partially anyhow), but after an hour or so it does resolve itself and show correct temps (ie. mirrors those on my iMac that is) so not quite as bad - what drew my attention to iPad weather not fully work was the lack of temp displayed top right in the News app sometimes, again this did resolve itself after a while.

The iPad behaviour started me thinking this is reminiscent of Apple server problems, but if others have not experienced the weather app freezing that would rule that idea out unless it's location based, so at the moment can only assume it's a bug - has anyone reported issue through https://developer.apple.com/bug-reporting/ yet?
