That worked for me too....not sure if anyone else noticed this or not but this bug also effects your use of the control center function when your screen is locked. I sometimes swipe up to use my camera quickly when the screen was locked and that function didn't work either. Changing it to zoomed has worked. I haven't change it back to standard yet to just test out how long it lasts before moving back to standard view.
EDIT: had some widgets after all (no discover though), removed all of them now. Will follow up.
I suspect you are seeing random luck. I don't have the discover widget, never have, and have had this issue. So I think you are seeing a coincidence, not causality.

It’s happening on my brand new iPhoneX that I just bought on the 2nd.
This is really bad, I am not getting my clock on the screen in my new iPhone 8 Plus . It is so inconvenience to open the phone to see the time.
Please suggest, I bought iPhone X yesterday and it is under warranty and I can return it within 15 days I guess. So there is nothing to do with the device right?

Same issue here. Been happening for weeks. No discover widget. Having to restart the phone constantly is annoying. Apple needs to fix this. From the thread its been going on for months now!

What do you mean I am currently doing where I switch to zoom and then to standard. It’s really frustrating that Apple is taking a long time to fix this issue because a lot of people are experiencing this bug. I hope they fix this really fast!
It started for me when I updated to ios 11.0.3. I have restarted numerous times and per Apple support backed up and restored the operating system and 24 hours later, it is back doing it again - no clock and no notifications.
