iOS 11 auto time zone problem

I travel internationally extensively for work. I have always had my iPhone Time Zone set to "Set Automatically." When I arrive at my destination and connect to the WiFi, the iPhone correctly set the time.

However, since iOS 11, now when I turn my phone to Airplane Mode when I go to bed, the time zone reverts to my home time zone. This caused me to miss an alarm that I set!!! Please fix this!!

This worked for me. I think everything was working fine while we travelled until I changed Facebook's location services to "while using the app" because Facebook was chewing up battery charge. Make sure you follow the path all the way to the setting as adviced by TheLastPagan: Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Setting Time Zone and turn this on. It is deep in iOS. I have two iPhones and only one had the issue with the only difference the Facebook location services so that's why I am suggesting this may have something to do with it. Regardless, if Setting Time Zone is off for any reason it won't update your time zone automatically.

The gremlins are not out. Maybe for those that want auto time zone On, it is. However, for those of us who want it Off and want it to stay Off until we change it, the gremlins continue to exist. If we change the setting to Off, any time the IOS is updated or the phone is reset, manually or other, the setting moves to On. It’s horrible. Since date and time is such a base / core function this seems to be an absurd problem to be dealing with. Apple, please fix this ASAP.

Ah so we aren’t the only ones this is happening to. All 3 iPhones in my house have been replaced. Each of us upgraded to 11 as we got new phones. We have the 8, 8Plus, and A X and it’s as random as it is repeatable (by rebooting or updating and rebooting). Hit or miss when you want it to happen though. Never fails to cause trouble when it decides to do it on its own. All our phones have been doing it since they arrived so for the 8s we are talking about months!

I spoke to Apple Support on the phone. They told me they opened a ticket with the engineers. To me it seems the iOS is ignoring its own setting. They said it may be a carrier related issue but agreed not completely a carrier related problem. Regardless of what the carrier pushes to the phone, the users settings should work as designed not as they just so happen to because of this or that factor. I think they are actively working on it. I got that much out of the call. Soon. Soon.

My problem is the reverse

I keep my phone on EST because I use hotels on edges of time zones and I can miss morning alarms depending on what tower I use.

Recently my phone has been switching to auto time zone - this has now happened twice in the last two days.

Please fix as if I cannot trust my alarm then I have to change phones - I must make meetings on time

Same issue here. I travel weekly between the West and East coast and prefer to have my phone always on my home time. Every time I turn the phone off and back on I have to go back in and turn the Set Automatically back off. Worse thing is it transfers to my Apple Watch too so I have missed appt in my destination since I am used to doing the conversion in my head.

Come on Apple, give us something to fix this.

I will take a deeper look at my settings....I have my “set Time Zone“ turned off, the location toggle “setting time zone“ turned off, ....and I’m also set to 24 hour time...I’m not sure what else might affect this.

I do a daily hard restart “every morning” and I’m up to date with ios 11.2.1...If I can think of, or find anything else, I’ll post....

The only other items that come to mind..

a) I have pretty much restricted all apps (including system services) from using the location services

b) I have turned off background refresh for everything.

If I have need of an app that uses location services; I allow access at that time..for the amount of time I use the app, then restrict that app again (now, where did I put my tinfoil hat😁)

Really people - the work arounds to try to make a $1000 phone in to an $5 alarm clock are interesting but Apple need to take this very seriously - this may be my (and my full family and work) last apple phone. want it OFF

When I turn off WIFi - I

When I set my time zone to EST - -I want it set FOR EVER or till I change it
I have had enough of some apple programmer making up his mind to change my settings

Find the little B'stard and get rid of him and make our VERY expensive phone work reliably under OUR control

We’ve already been down that path. It does not fix this problem. And we shouldn’t have to do that anyway. If I set time zone automatically to off, there’s no justifiable reason the iOS should change the setting. Period. It’s a setting I am supposed to be able to control, not the iOS and everyone on this thread is suffering because this defect exists. Apple need to fix this as the current time is base functionality and those experiencing this problem have lost the ability to control this base functionality on their phones.

I have spoken with Apple support twice on this one. They told me the engineers are aware of the issue so it must be being dealt with. I can’t imagine what would have needed to change with carrier time zone handling so why something got recoded there doesn’t make sense yet. Whatever they were up to they made a mistake. All they gotta do now is correct it. Hopefully they are pushing a fix through the paces as we toil in despair and dig for the old school alarm clocks!

I’m having the same problem here. My IPhone 8 keeps resetting the time zone to ‘set automatically’ - happens every restart. What’s worse is that whenever my Watch 3 is out of range of the iPhone it automatically switches time zone to my neighbouring state (Queensland, Australia) which is an hour behind, regardless of what’s happening with the time zone setting on my phone. It seems like it’s only a soft switch and not a hard switch for it to keep doing this.
