iOS 11 auto time zone problem

I travel internationally extensively for work. I have always had my iPhone Time Zone set to "Set Automatically." When I arrive at my destination and connect to the WiFi, the iPhone correctly set the time.

However, since iOS 11, now when I turn my phone to Airplane Mode when I go to bed, the time zone reverts to my home time zone. This caused me to miss an alarm that I set!!! Please fix this!!

This worked for me. I think everything was working fine while we travelled until I changed Facebook's location services to "while using the app" because Facebook was chewing up battery charge. Make sure you follow the path all the way to the setting as adviced by TheLastPagan: Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Setting Time Zone and turn this on. It is deep in iOS. I have two iPhones and only one had the issue with the only difference the Facebook location services so that's why I am suggesting this may have something to do with it. Regardless, if Setting Time Zone is off for any reason it won't update your time zone automatically.

A further update on the iOS time zone conundrum. I’m in Delhi now and the phone has not changed to local time at all. Admittedly it hasn’t been restarted, it’s just been in flight safe mode for the hop over but this is still an improvement on the situation prior to the ‘time zone override’ trick in iCal. Previously it would come out of flightsafe and change itself to local time immeadiatly despite not having that option enabled.

I'm having a similar problem--it is NOT resolved, Apple! Home time zone is New York. I'm now in Melbourne Aus. My Mac shows the Calendar events on the correct dates and times and has updated my Mac menu. ICloud is correct also. But my iPhone shows the current local time at the top of the screen and Date & Time is "set automatically" with the Melbourne time zone. However, the events are shown on the iPhone calendar as 19 hours later than the New York time.

Here's another reason to stick with the older iOS 10.x.x Like the issue of Safari not being able to delete all of it's website data including files from sensitive financial sites, Apple has stopped fixing real problems that are affecting 1000's of its customers who use there devices for real work. Instead they focus on giving us silly new emogis. Of course if a problem hits national headlines, it magically gets quickly fixed. For the rest of the problems, I guess they are waiting until people start ditching their products for their competitors before they take notice they have lost market share and start to wonder why. Hard to claw back what you once had Apple. Marketing 101. Focus on customer retention. I for one am very frustrated.

It’s clear now. Apple is forcing all of us to change how we live to accommodate the tech we’ve chosen to use in our day to day lives. Rather than providing tech that aids us, Apple is forcing 1000s of us to adopt a new lifestyle. For those of us who have been keeping our tech set to our preferred time zone, Apple is saying we won’t supoort that use case. Change to what we believe is the preferred model. Always adjust the time to local time. I’ve used my preferred time zone for 3 decades. Always. Now because of this defect, I am constantly having to monitor what time zone my phone is set to. This weekend I almost missed a flight because of this. If my investment in Apple tech wasn’t so extensive I would scrap it all. iPhones. Apple Watch. Apple TV. MacBooks. AirPort Extreme iPad. So they’re betting on user adoption rather than fixing the defect. And is it even a defect if this is their response? If they don’t plan to fix it, why even have the setting in the device in the first place? It’s absurd beyond reason and is a huge fail on their part. Withthousands of employees and billions in revenue and stockpiled, how can they not allocate resources to fix the defect? It’ can only be a silent and intentional approach to force us to adopt as in their opinion it is how we should be living.

Hmmm. I wonder if it's a hardware problem associated with the chipsets they've chosen. Like the Safari data delete problem that mysteriously showed up when they changed over to the APFS file system, perhaps they CAN'T fix these issues in software. That's my theory and only Apple can prove it wrong by fixing these issues before we start unwinding their products from our daily lives.

Yeah, I switched last week due to Safari data problem for a year and no response from Apple. Can't have my bank data cookies permanently etched into phone's memory. Now my wife's yelling at me about this time zone issue since she upgraded. Guess I'll have to buy another phone now to keep the peace. Of course, we'll need to pitch the watches and find one compatible with Samsung/Android. More money out of the window. Apple, you getting this? You're losing customers over these real issues!

No it hasn't. I have a 6 with IOS 11.3.1 and it still keeps reverting to automatic. As an airline pilot its particularly annoying and I'm getting close to ditching Apple across all devices. The devices and software are becoming a programmers' show off tool and losing sight of the simple ethos that created their success in the first place. I cannot control my account properly and there is no longer any useful help from the company. No way will I spend $999 on a new phone when you cannot have full control of it and your associated data.
