iPhone 8 bluetooth issues

My new iPhone 8 is having all kinds of wonkiness with bluetooth. It refused to pair with my AirPods, repeatedly dropped connection to my 2016 car, routinely loses connection with my series 1 watch and refused to connect to unlock my laptop (all things that I had no issues with before moving over from my iPhone 6). Apple support told me to erase all content, reset and go through a reinstall from a backup (and all the password re-entry etc.) which I did wasting a couple hours of my day. Their remote diagnostic said bluetooth was fine and some of my apps (none to be named) had problems necessitating this restoration from backup. Needless to say, the issue does not seem solved. Anyone else having bluetooth issues with the iPhone 8? All of these bluetooth connectivity issues worked flawlessly on the 6 (with iOS11 and all prior iterations I had) so I may just sent the 8 back and live w/ my 3 year old battery for a while longer.....

Possible fix to some of the issues. We had an appointment at the Apple Store last night and discussed this issue with them. My wife's Ford Explorer was dropping the bluetooth out intermittently during phone calls and even when not in a phone call. Her watch would also disconnect at times. The weird thing was we discovered that she could play music and it would not drop out when streaming music through bluetooth. We told the Apple Genius that we had restored the phone from a backup several times and that did not fix the issue. The Apple Genius felt strongly that the backup had something corrupt about it so he suggested that we restore this as a new phone and not restore from the backup any longer. We had to manually save all of the photos and contacts to a hard drive before doing this. Once we restored this phone as a new phone, we then added all of the photos and contacts again from the hard drive. We also had to add all of the apps manually. Finally, we tested making phone calls several times and we have not had an issue once. This may help some of you in the future. It is a long process so be prepared for this to take a few hours depending on the amount of files that you have. Good luck!

Nope. Sadly already tried 11.1.2 am on it and still the bluetooth is not fixed at all and till now its seems that the latest beta from 11.2 did not address this issue. let's just hope they address very soon as it's really frustrating. I advise everyone to go to apple store and call their support about this issue. they will not be able to fix it but at least when they see alot of people reporting it then they will actually notice and may consider to fix it asap for all of us. am personally going tomorrow to an apple store.

unfortunately the signal is very in the iPhone 8 due to some issue in the bluetooth hardware or software not confirmed till now but most probably software. cause it works abit better with an apple product like a beats headphone such as powerbeats 3 which i tested personally and seems that it performs a little bit better. but any other bluetooth device works terribly bad and specially if two devices are connected to it at the same time it will be disconnecting and reconnecting one of the devices every minute. hope they push a fix fast

Glad I found this thread--thought I was losing my mind. Having same issue with 2011 Mercedes S550. BT connectivity worked fine with every previous iPhone (4, 6, 7) but repeatedly disconnects with new iPhone 8+. Use it with Tune2Air BT streaming adapter and as long as I stay connected to this device (Listening to streaming content from phone) the phone always stays connected. (Media Interface on Mercedes). As soon as I go to FM or other source in car iPhone BT connection repeatedly connects and disconnects. Actually annoying and distracting--cannot be safe. Mercedes is now hearing of issues (went to dealer), Apple is hearing issues (Here and went to store to no avail) but no formal response from Apple.

Seems somewhat related to phone cellular signal strength but not consistent. One test is to have two bluetooth devices connected to the phone at the same time including the car handsfree and see if is a clue. It was on mine.

We need a acknowledgment and fix from Apple now!

I also am having the same issues with my iPhone 8 and bluetooth. Recently, I had my car repaired and had the wonderful experience of having a 2017 Audi, a 2017 Hyundai and a 2018 Nissan Maxima. My vehicle is an older Kia Sportage but it has a 5 year old Kenwood, 2 din, Bluetooth enabled radio. My iPhone 8 bluetooth disconnected from all of them all the time so it's not the auto manufacturer in my opinion.

Further, I would call "Hey Siri, make this call" and the iPhone would make the call but disconnect from bluetooth (the radios) and then I would hear the phone calling but would not be able to use it.

It is seriously against the law here to do 'Distacted Driving' with a cell phone and people have been charged with involuntary murder for having an accident causing death while using the hand held phone in some capacity (calling or texting).

I believe that it has something to do with the system's 'Do Not Disturb While Driving' that keeps screwing with the system. although I have that feature disabled, often times my wife will pickup the phone and it will have a picture of the car on the screen. Also, sometimes I ask Siri to play some music on Spotify and it responds with "I can't do that while you're driving Jo...". Sometimes, it will say that it can't do that because the iPone is locked. Many times it will playmy music with no problems at all.

Also, many time (way too many) Siri won't respond to "Hey Siri" at all and that is wether or not it is connected to bluetooth.

Apple, please fix this and stop screwing with our bluetooth communication while driving. I paid a lot of money for a bluetooth enabled radio so that I could use it not to be governed by Apple Policy!

I upgraded to an iPhone 8 six weeks ago and have been going back and forth with Apple for 5 1/2 weeks over this issue. The Bluetooth repeatedly disconnects and reconnects in my 2012 Mazda 3, when the iPhone 5S running iOS 11 worked perfectly before upgrading to the iPhone 8. I’ve had my car checked by the mechanics at the dealership and the Bluetooth in the car is working perfectly (Apple wouldn’t investigate the problem until I’d been to the dealer). I’ve done all the un-pairing and re-pairing, rebooting the phone, doing a full reset of the phone etc. I’ve replicated the problem and sent logs from my phone to Apple and they’ve run diagnostics on my phone remotely and say it’s working properly. I’ve been to an Apple authorized repairer who were unable to replicate the problem on the Bluetooth devices they had in the store and will be providing a report for Apple tomorrow, saying the Bluetooth problem is intermittent and they haven’t been able to reproduce it in the half hour or so that they had the phone.

I’m waiting on a call back from Apple tomorrow but it looks like my only option from here may be to agree to send the phone to Apple interstate and let them run testing on the phone, which means being without a phone for the time it takes (I don’t have a landline and even if I got my old iPhone 5S back from the person I gave it to, apparently the iPhone 8 SIM card doesn’t fit it) and in all likelihood, them saying there’s no problem. I didn’t purchase the phone outright from Apple and got it as part of a contract with a phone carrier, so can’t return the phone as they will only take it back if I can’t get phone call or internet coverage in my area. According to the Australian Consumer and Competition Commision, that means I’d have to write a letter of demand to the phone carrier saying why the phone is unacceptable and what resolution I’m looking for, then when they refuse to accept a return, will have to escalate it to the telecommunications ombudsman. This process is likely to take a few months if I decide to do it. I’m so ****** off and wish I’d just stuck with the iPhone 5S.

I thought this was an interesting update. I’d spent an hour with the mechanic at Mazda when I first got the iPhone 8 to confirm that the Bluetooth in my car was working properly. In late December, I logged a request with Mazda Australia to find out when they would be completing testing of the comparability of the iPhone 8 and iOS 11 with Mazda cars, as I’d been allocated a new case manager with Apple Support (the previous one just stopped replying to my emails) and he had started again with blaming my car instead of the phone or operating system and I wanted to be able to tell him it’s not my car. The case manager has since gone back to saying it’s iOS 11 and that I need to wait for an update to fix the Bluetooth issues but I had a call back from Mazda today. The guy from Mazda said their testing shows the iPhone 8 isn’t compatible with their cars and that they are hoping to release a software update for my car in the next couple of months. There are obviously Bluetooth issues that are more widespread than just comparability with my car, so I’m wondering if the testing showed the iPhone 8 is incompatible because it’s running on iOS 11, which is causing the Bluetooth to not work correctly? Or whether there’s an iOS problem plus iPhone 8 comparability problem?

That problem’s been plaguing me for the 3-4 years. I don’t think it’s iOS 11. It may be the Bluetooth device aggressively connecting. My problem had been that I could connect with my car radio and it would work for a while and then I’d try to call someone and the phone would switch back to the internal speaker. Apple told me to change the name of the iPhone. I think it was named iPhone. I created a longer name and it worked somehow. I haven’t had any problems since. Good luck with your phone!

I’ve been talking to my phone carrier about terminating my contract with the iPhone 8 and returning it, and starting a new contract with the Samsung S8. It’s being escalated to a manager for consideration and I don’t know if they’ll agree or not as it’s against their policy but in the meantime, I’ve been doing some research. The S8 has apparently also had widespread Bluetooth problems and it too is in the first generation of phones with Bluetooth 5. Samsung at least acknowledged the problem and started working on a firmware fix, since Bluetooth 5 is supposed to be backwards compatible with previous Bluetooth versions. I’m still trying to work out if it’s been fixed or not but haven’t found any complaints since about October last year so far. It looks like maybe Apple haven’t developed their operating system to work properly with Bluetooth 5?

i have the exact same issues with different bluetooth headsets. so its not limited to car audio systems only and in top of that the range on most of my bluetooth headsets are terrible using the iPhone 8 plus. i have to hold the phone near my headset. i can't keep it in my pocket or bag and get a good signal. i had an iphone 7 and it was perfect with every bluetooth headset i have used and the signal range was perfect.

Jan 24, 2018 12:26 PM in response to deggie

Yes. I think it's the car's fault because the car works just fine with the iPhone 6s. I think it's because the iPhone 8 Plus uses Bluetooth 5 and the 6s uses Bluetooth 4. My other Bluetooth receivers can cooperate with Bluetooth 5 but maybe the car is too old?

The iPhone 8 Plus should be backwards compatible. If something works with the 6s, it should work with the 8 Plus.

Jan 24, 2018 12:49 PM in response to ehendel

No, it shouldn't, but Apple doesn't make the Broadcom chip, design it, or design the BT specs. And the Bluetooth consortium can't monitor every BT receiver that is made. If there is a slight flaw the device might not work with a new broadcast chipset. The only way around this is for people to contact AppleCare and give them the details of the device that is not working so they can see if they can find a solution.
