Iphone 8 Home Screen Frozen

I woke up this morning to a frozen home screen on my iPhone 8 64 gb. The alarm went off like normal, and I could remove notifications from my lock screen, as well as swipe into the camera.

However when I unlocked my phone, I could not click on any of the app icons, with the mail icon greyed out like I had clicked it. I could open the control center, which worked like normal except that it wouldn't let me into the calculator or camera apps. I cannot swipe left to the notifications or right to the 2nd page

I tried force restarting, which didn't restart the phone. I held the down volume and power button for over a minute.

What can I do? Withforce restart not working do I have to wait for the battery to drain and then recharge?

Force Restart on iPhone 8 (steps are different from previous models):

  • Quick-press the Volume Up button.
  • Quick-press the Volume Down button.
  • Press and hold the Side button for ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

After 13 hours, the ONLY thing that force restarted my 8plus was to press the UP Volume button ONCE then press the volume DOWN button ONCE then hold the power button (not home button) for about 10 to 15 seconds. Then and only then did I get the Apple Logo & my phone finally rebooted. Doing it Apple’s way, with pushing volume up several times and volume down several times then the power button yielded NO RESULTS, the phone would NOT restart with that method.

Of note, all the times my new 8 plus jammed, occured right after a notification from an app. Usually instagram. I have now turned off notifications so none show on the home screen or lock screen. I also turned off background App refresh for all apps.

This is definitely a ios 11 issue and for me started right after the 11.3 update.

Hope this helps!

All

Apple just released an update 11.1 that is supppose to fix this issue. After this download and update, if this does not fix our issues, we as Apple consumers must all press the issue with them. I suggest contacting your local news stations as sometimes they have investigations segments for frustrated consumers and get this out their about Apple. We have paid too much money for this to be happing, and hopefully Apple will refund or issue new type of phone such as X if this update does not fix issue

I’ve had the same problem for weeks with my iPhone 8, sure force restart would fix it for a time but it would happen again and again. Eventually I wiped it and started it as a new phone which I thought fixed it but it didn’t so i wiped it and restored from a cloud backup and still didn’t fix it. Eventually this past weekend I took it into a Genius Bar appointments and they replaced the phone under Apple care citing that it wasn’t an OS issue but hardware issue because while the screen was frozen the home button still would do things. That said here I am with my newly replaced iPhone 8 that’s two days old and it just happend again so I don’t think this is going away, I suspect it’s a hardware bug in the screens themselves.

I have been on the phone with Apple support and actually upper management with this one !!! They have acknowledged that this is a issue with iOS 11 and the engineers are working on this . They could not give me an answer as to when this issue would be worked out but said that they are working on it . I suggest that everyone who reads this really stay on Apple about this and let them know how unhappy we are as loyal customers . I also let them know I want to be reimbursed for my time because I bought a product that was about $1,000 and it’s still not working after a month and 2 iPhone exchanges. I don’t care what it is , I think as customers paying the amount of money we have now and in the past are entitled for some compensation. So please everyone with this issue call in and ask for a custom care rep and insist on this being taking care of

This does not work for my phone. All I get is the phone turning dark. aside from the volume quick up down, and holding power button for 10 seconds (which will NOT give me the apple logo), is there any way to force restart the phone? I have also plugged the phone into iTunes and run a backup, but I cannot restore or factory reset the phone because I cannot get into the phone to turn off the find my phone option. This is by far the worse iPhone I have ever owned (8Plus), horrible software, jams daily, but this time it's been 13 hours and the phone is unusable. Nothing works except emergency 911, siri and the home button.

These are the instructions to force restart your device (extracted from Apple support guide 1st paragraph):

If your screen is black or frozen

If your screen is black or frozen, you might need to force restart your device. A force restart won't erase the content on your device. You can force restart your device even if the screen is black or the buttons aren't responding. Follow these steps:

On an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Then press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.

But if you can't do a forced restart on your device, then I suggest that you contact your nearest Apple Store or AASP, and have your iPhone checked.

I have not read the whole thread in this but the force restart is difficult for the 8plus. Press the up volume once then press the down volume volume right after then press and hold the power button until the Apple logo comes on . Google force restart instructions for iPhone 8plus as I’m sure you just hold down the power after pressing up volume once then down volume once . Try again if it doesn’t work the first time as I did and it fixed my frozen screen .

One time no had to goto find my iPhone from another computer , log into this option and select erase iPhone . It worked for me but make sure you have backups. After I erased, I had to do the whole setup again as it was a new phone . Make sure you’re on another device so you can authorize since your signed into iCloud . Again this worked for me and I’m not an expert . I have been on the phone with senior customer relations they have been advices by the engineers that they now are aware of the freezing issue and will come out with a update this . They could not give me a timeline to the fix and I stated they need to issue some sort of compensation or credit for this big issue with the phones .

Doing it this way actually finally worked. Pressing the up volume button ONCE, then the down volume button ONCE, then holding the power button until the apple logo appeared. Doing it the Apple support way of pressing the volume up repeatedly, and the volume down repeatedly then holding the power button would not work.

Thank you very much! So frustrating, and I would add that the instagram notifications are what is freezing my new 8plus, so beware of that app.
