Can't edit or share my iPhone photos

Hi,

Since upgrading to iOS 11, I've discovered some strange behaviour in the Camera and Photos app. Any photo which I have taken recently can't be edited or shared. (The icons are greyed out).

Anyone know why this is?

[Re-Titled by Host]

I can still share photos by going into the Messages app and attaching them, just not from the Camera or Photos app. I suspect that once I sync via wifi that makes the photos editable/shareable, but it is annoying to have to do this and not be able to edit them straight away. I suspect a mobile data setting, but no amount of playing around has been able to resolve it.

I have a 128Gb iPhone 6s, running iOS 11.0 (15A372). There's plenty of free space.

My wife is having the same trouble. She takes a photo that can be edited then just minutes later takes another that can’t be edited. It makes no sense. Restarting the phone makes no difference. Very frustrating.

I just got a new ipad with ios11.1 and now I cannot edit some cartoon images I save (e.g., from dilbert.com) — “Edit” is grayed out. Photos (old and new) from my ipad work fine, as do photos saved from online sites (e.g. nytimes.com). Screenshots of the troubled cartoons can be edited, but not the saved mage of the cartoon.

I assume it’s related to file format. This was not a problem with my old ipad n ios10.3.

Any ideas?

@cwconnell, thanks for your suggestion, but this doesn't address the core issue at all, I believe. The problem is that randomly, pictures taken are view-only in Photos. You can't edit them for x period of time (also seemingly random). Once the photo becomes editable, the problem goes away for that photo.

I will be glad if this is bypassed by using Google photos (which I do use), and the next time it happens I'll do another check to see if opening the photo with Google Photos is a usable workaround.

There is a difference between answering a question and promoting a competing product. "Try it out and beath easier," reads like a marketing tagline that someone paid to make comments by Google would include.

It's unhelpful, even insulting, to tell try and sway me to Google Photos by telling me not to use Apple Photos. You're doing exactly the opposite of what you intend.

I noticed this behavior only occurs with photos taken while iPhone is locked and using camera shortcut/swipe. So all other photos taken while unlocked are able to be edited and shared. Hope Apple release a fix to unlock these photos... Shortcut is as its name describe it to reduce steps having the camera app handy and reachable with a single swipe... But this shortcut becomes to nonsense if these files are not able to be shared or edited for any other purposes through photo/camera roll app.

Its not the IOS11 it does it on earlier IOS as well. I had this happen and could not find out why only on one photo???

I did a screen shot and was able to edit crop and share the photo.et the new

I do wish apple would stop sending out bugs with every IOS and also insist that you must upgrade to it. But this is not that bug

No, they won't be able to help you, unfortunately. It's not the hardware that is broken but the software.

It's recently been announced that Apple is focusing their software development on iOS and macOS bugs, so I really hope this is one of the things they resolve. I recommend all of you go log this as a bug at http://bugreporter.apple.com

The more people who log it, the higher it goes on their to-do list.

I did just read a post about the shortcut to the camera app from your locked screen causing problems. Means the extra steps unlocking the phone, opening the app, & possibly missing your shot... NOT an acceptable permanent solution, but I’m hoping it will work for now... I’ve tried everything else & would have never thought of that.

Here's a workaround that I found if you also have a Mac:

1. Open the problem photo in Photos on the Mac after it syncs.

2. Choose File -> Export -> Export Unmodified Original for 1 Photo

(This will put create two files - a file ending in .HEIC and the movie part of the live photo, ending in .mov.)

3. Delete the problem photo.

4. Choose File -> Import and select both exported files (hold the command key to select multiple files). This will import one photo with the metadata and the video part of the live photo preserved. When it syncs back to your iPhone it should be editable/sharable again.

NOT RESOLVED.

256gb iPhone X here. Been having this problem for months. Photos I literally JUST took won’t load, can’t edit, and can’t use in other apps. Tried talking to support a few times but very difficult to explain without being able to share screenshots.

The problem worsens for me—the photos app constantly trying to “Uploading 119,209 items” with no progress. I have “optimize iPhone storage” enabled, and a photos specialist told me that when this is on, photos must be uploaded to the cloud before you can do anything with them, but it seems like resrouces are bogged down with the iCloud Photo Library constantly trying to sync up. Even tried restoring from scratch and “rebuilding” the entire library, which took several days with 110k+ photos and videos. Worked fine for a few weeks, then recently started started giving me problems again.

Not sure what to do.

Hi Everyone! Even the fact, i'm thinking, like some of you, that the problem is just a bug, from Apple's Photos software. I've got to say, that, i've a practical, but unorthodox, way, for succesfully, pass the thing...check out this: As you're having the picture, just spotted, in the screen of the phone, you will, always, have the possibility, of capturing the screen, pressing, simultaneously, the central and side button of your iPhone...in that way, you'll create an acceptable (maybe not perfect), copy, of the picture you need, and now, you can save it again. That way, the editing or share options will be enabled on your new picture! 😉
