Get a terminal window, frome the recovery menu. The menu bar at the top, not the window dot in the middle. Then enter the date command and you should see some some old date at January 1st. My MBP has a battery problem and wasn’t plugged in for a while so the system date got reset.
To fix type
date 1016200017
which is October 16th 20:00 (or 8pm) 2017.
So mmddhhmiyy
all two digits.
After that recovery worked. Must have something to do with certificate validity or something maybe.
This totally worked!
I was stuck with the same problem for 2 days!
Just as Desmet said, I used the terminal to set the current date and time and it worked!
I kept attempting to reset my laptop and was having the same issue. I just had to log into my WiFi and it started working. Hope this helps? :-)

Setting to the correct time and date fixed the first error message issue

Wi-fi is available, however, you’ll find the fastest (and likely most secure) connection will be found by directly connecting your machine using an Ethernet cable directly to your modem (or router).
I clicked on the wifi logo on the top right of the screen and joined my network, seems to be downloading the OS fine now
This is very helpful I just tried this method use not my Time zone but the UTC time zone and it
Make sure that your internet have connected.
I had this issue. I plugged the macbook pro 15in into my network with a usb to ethernet adapter and plugged it into the network. Then it worked
I’m trying to reinstall macOS High Sierra! But every time it shows that “the recovery server could not be contacted”. Is there any other options to connect with the server without any trouble?
See the earlier comments about setting the date. That solved it for me.

I got mine fixed by turning on the WiFi in the top right corner of the screen.
Please, turn on your WiFi and connect it. Hope, it will help.
