At least with your model, you were able to rename the card via Disk Utility, with my 2010 Mac mini (a model many are reporting having card reader issues after installing High Sierra) Disk Utility doesn't even give me that option (unless I plug the card into an external reader, such as a USB reader or my printer's card reader).
Same issue here, on the internal drive, the minute High Sierra finished installing. Transcend SD Card, 2015 Macbook Pro.
Astonishing Apple don't comment here. So many disappointed users, and all we get from Apple?: 🤐
Okay, so I've had this issue too. And I've posted here before. I had a card reader that was not working so I tried a different (new) card reader and it worked. Then it suddenly stopped working as well, interestingly after I downloaded the Sierra upgrade this week. And I found another card reader that uses a USB that was reliable in the past, to no avail. Also, it was not recognizing my camera, and suddenly, after upgrading, it does. But I also used a different cord, so perhaps that was the problem. However, a different cord and different camera did not make a difference for me before. So for me it has been intermittent but very frustrating, not knowing what to expect. I will try the fix someone just mentioned and let you know how it works. Thanks.
Same issue for me ... on a Mac Mini (2010) (last model with a built-in drive), System Report says "This computer doesn't contain any Apple Internal Memory Card Readers", so I suspect this is a possible future fix? (Please, Apple?!) :-)
[Mac Mini > Hardware > Card Reader]
I'm hoping I can use a USB adapter as a workaround in the meantime... but I *love* that this OS release (10.13.3) seems to fix a number of problems I had with older software! Wonder how and why that happened? I was about to install Ubuntu Linux on my Mac Mini, but it's useful again!
Same issue here. 2010 mini. Just had to upgrade to high sierra. And bingo, lost my SD card reader like a champ.
Tried everything in this thread. nothing works. guess i'm going to go get a plug-in sd card reader. Yay!
*** Apple! Nothing but love.
Those using Transcend drives - my advice is uninstall the toolbox software. I experimented with a fresh High Sierra install on an external drive and found my SD card issues were solved. I then uninstalled their software and my main install now works fine. Filed a bug report.
You are correct. This issue is supposed to be about the internal card reader on 2010 Mac Mini not being detected by the most recent updates to High Sierra. Several external usb card readers Ive tried do work so I wish folks would quit posting about how to get these usb readers to work and stick to the issue of trying to get the internal readers to work! Apple should be able to fix this without too much trouble if they just would!
I called Support and they had me restart in Safe Mode (hold down shift as it restarts), login and insert the card again. The card showed up in safe mode. Then I restarted without taking the card out and it showed up. Hope this helps!
I had a similar problem but with an important variation. I COULD import footage from my SD card - no problem there - but when I created any movies in iMovie after the beginning of November 2017 there was a noticeable defect/glitch/picture break up at the top of the frame which lasted a second or so. This occurred several times in a 3 or 4 minute video. I considered problems with my camera or the SD card or the slot on my Mac but then realized that the problem occurred RIGHT after upgrading to macOS High Sierra 10.13.1 in November 2017. IMHO then it had to be related to the upgrade and after discussion with techs and Apple Care, I learned it was a combination of the upgrade AND the fact that my regular camera model was no longer supported by Apple and iMovie. Big news to me. Tim at Apple created a "walk around" for me that meant I would not need to go out and buy a new camera. Basically it involved on finding the clips in Canon then AVCHD and then exporting via Quick time and them importing back again as a .mov file. A little convoluted but it has been working. So if anyone is having that "glitch" problem - no need to buy a new camera - just take this new approach. Hope it works for you as it did me
Your reply to digitalrex is helpful to some extent and I am glad that there is a video out there which might help others. My problem is a different one as I mentioned yesterday. SD card reader DOES work for me - it's just that there is glitch in working with videos in iMovie. I entered into this discussion but now realize that the better approach is for me to start a new discussion about my specific issue and will do that shortly. But thanks again for taking the time to post here.
I upgraded to High Sierra 10.13.4. I was hoping this latest update would address this long-standing/widely-reported issue. Alas, the computer still won't detect my 2010 MacMini's internal SD card reader. 😟
Apple specifically listed the 2010 Mac mini as being compatible with OS 10.13 High Sierra. If they don't want to support it, then they shouldn't have listed it as being compatible. Apple's own update service urged me to "upgrade" to an OS that renders a hardware feature on its own device inoperable. They should back up their claim that the computer is compatible. I've emailed Apple about the SD card, but never received a reply. Downgrading is a huge hassle, and frankly, not a pragmatic solution. Sorry, Apple but you've given this Mac buyer since 1991 second thoughts about replacing this computer with another Apple product. This is really a poor business model.
Hi,
I know this is a few months old, however, no one seems to have found a solution, and I have one.
The solution is very simple: don't insert the SD card fully. Insert it all the way but stop at around 1mm from the end.
This is caused by dust accumulation where the contacts are on the reader, a very hard blow or a whiff from an air compressed can should also fix it.
This worked for both my MacBook and my iMac. It's a great advice for your Macs and also great for your sex life too sometimes! 😀
Hi guys
OK
to remedy this is easy....
Mine didn't work 2 issues found
iMac 27" 5k I turned the Mac round and with a torch and toothpick/cocktail stick
I found part of an SD Card label at the back of the Slot..
After getting it out, still didn't work!!!!!
Bottom taskbar opened Launchpad ( the grey Rocket )
Opened Image Capture, inserted Micro SD card in an Adaptor it showed in image capture!!
Next you have to do this exactly as written.
Eject SD from the computer in the image capture App, close app, re-insert SD Card into back of Mac and you should see it.
If you don't open Finder, goto Preferences
make sure in General
External Disks and CD,DVD,ipods are both ticked, Then goto the Sidebar Tab and make sure they are both ticked there.
You should now have your SD
To all you people giving advice for what worked for you PLEASE READ PREVIIOUS COMMENTS before typing what you perceive to be the obvious solution. This discussion is about a very specific issue that impacts certain makes and models Macs (with the majority of the people experiencing this issue being 2010 Mac mini users). 5K iMacs are not what we're talking about. If you had a problem with your 5K iMac's card reader, please post it in a new topic discussion, as your issue and your solution are probably both valid, it's just that they're not relevant to this discussion. Mac OS High Sierra rendered the internal drive reader inoperable on certain older model Macs that Apple stated are OS High Sierra compatible. There are quite a few people experiencing this issue, and it's no coincidence that we are all experiencing it on the same specific models. There's nothing physically wrong with the card reader, nor is there a problem with the cards. This is an OS High Sierra specific issue that impacts certain makes and models that Apple needs to address with a software update. Speaking for myself, I have tried ALL of the recommendations listed to no avail (and I'm fairly confident others have too). SMC reset does not fix it, nor does blowing compressed air in the slot, safe boot, etc... etc.. etc.., The only solution that appears to work successfully for those specific Mac models is downgrading the OS to the previous version (i.e. OS 10.12 or earlier), which anyone who's done can attest is not a pragmatic fix.
