In Photos at the top of the second window tick Open Photos>
In Photos> Devices > *NO NAME*
If your device is not there see if you can hover over Devices > Show
Open Finder and see if it there, may need Devices > Show again
Hope this works for you.
That's interesting. If it's working again after the downgrade, I think that would disprove my firmware theory, unless the downgrade restored the earlier EFI firmware (maybe it would need to downgrade the firmware because 10.12 isn't compatible with APFS???)

ok, I downgraded my Mac mini (Mid 2010) to 10.12.6.
Now the sdcard is working.
Also the benchmark shows proper speed, not like how it was in 10.13.1
however, there is another problem now. the write speed is slow now.
initially internal ssd write speed was ~104MB/s
after upgrading to high sierra, write speed became ~14.7MB/s
after 10.12.6 clean install write speed became ~33.4MB/s
maybe it's because of the updated EFI/bootrom.
I will try to downgrade and post the result here.
I have a mid 2010 iMac with this problem. I was trying to use my SD card from my Nikon D40 but the only time it would mount would be when I restarted with the SD in the slot.
After no luck trying several things, I updated to 10.13.2 + restarted with the SD in the slot + renamed the SD card. I took took the card out and put it back and it worked.
I'm not sure if the update matters but try to rename the card.
Same here with a 2012 Mac Mini. Mounting SD Card works and SD Card Shows up as connected. Though no Files Can be Copied or Replaced. I can see the contents from the SD Card from my Nikon D5100 but I am unable to Take Pictures out or Rename them while they are inside my SD Card Slot. SD Card shows up as exFat.
Like so many other mid-2010 Mac mini users, I too have been having this problem ever since "upgrading" to macOS High Sierra. I recently updated to version 10.13.3 in hopes the latest update would address this issue, for I had submitted a Feedback report to Apple when I first encountered this issue, along with a link to this thread. Alas, the latest update didn't address this issue. So today, I submitted a followup Feedback report indicating the problem still persists. When I checked Apple Menu > About This Mac > System Report the message I see is "This computer doesn't contain any Apple Internal Memory Card Readers." It's as if the drivers for the built-in card reader are no longer present. I've read some posts that suggest the newfangled APFS format might be the culprit. Hopefully, that's not the case, for I consider disabling a feature (built-in memory card reader) that was a selling point for this computer in favor of a slightly faster performance without notifying the end-user that this would happen with about the same regards I have for when Apple throttled older phone models' performance citing battery saving as its reason for doing so. However, I'm not convinced it's an APFS issue, for the hard drive's file system is still listed as "Journaled HFS+". For the time being, I'm using a USB memory card reader (which works just fine), but it ties up a USB port. Not everyone owns such a USB device, nor should they have to when the computer they purchased was advertised as being equipped with a built-in reader. Also worth noting, for those still experiencing this issue, if you have a printer hooked up with a card reader, try that. I was also able to import my camera pictures into the Apple Photos app by inserting my camera's SD card into my printer's built-in card reader. Though, not an ideal solution, it's a workaround.
I have found on Apple support:
1) About This Mac -> System Report -> Card reader turn it ON.
my comp displayed:
Vendor ID: 0x14e4
Device ID: 0x16bc
Subsystem Vendor ID: 0x106b
Subsystem ID: 0x0000
Revision: 0x0001
Link Width: x1
Link Speed: 2.5 GT/s
2) 2) The second is action{ TurnOff computer. Turn ON and hold: Opt + Command + R + P.. Drop the at the beep sound. I found this method at Apple support forum. It suppose to reset memory. So far it looks that it is permanent fix.

For me (MBP 13' 2017, MacOS 10.13.3) an SD card connected via an external card reader does show up in the Finder, but when I try to open it I get a nonsensical error message and I cannot see or access the SD card content.
However, I can access the data on the SD card via Terminal and then copy the data via shell commands to the hard disk.
(So this seems to be a problem in the Finder app, not in hardware or low level OS).
As previously mentioned, there's nothing wrong with the cards. I've tried numerous cards, all of which worked prior to upgrading to High Sierra and still work with readers other than the built-in one. This seems to be a bug that was introduced with macOS High Sierra and is specific to certain model Macs' internal card readers. Considering 324 users here indicated that their SD card reader is not working under High Sierra, the issue doesn't appear to be just a random card reader failure, but rather a specific problem introduced with this version of the macOS. Others have reported that downgrading to Sierra restores their internal card reader's functionality. There may be a few people who are reading this who might actually have a bad card reader or a bad card, but there also appears to be a bona fide problem/conflict introduced by macOS High Sierra that's disabling certain models' internal card reader.
shut down the computer, unplug the cable, wait for 15 seconds, plug the cable, wait for 5 seconds, power on computer.
it should show up this time. this is the instructions given by apple support and worked well for me
I'm glad that worked for you, but it sounds like you had a different issue. As indicated in previous comments, the internal card reader has stopped working for specific Mac owners (such as those with 2010 Mac minis who upgraded to mac OS High Sierra). This isn't a power cable issue (I'm assuming that's what you meant by "cable"), it's a conflict that's specific to a version of the macOS in conjunction with specific Mac models. And, yes, I have tried unplugging the power supply for a while and rebooted (longtime fan of the IT Crowd). My mini's internal card reader still doesn't read SD cards under macOS High Sierra.
You are correct in that this is an OS issue. The first thing I tried was the unplugging procedure. It did not work. Nothing else has either. I suspect there is actually a firmware issue that was likely addressed in an earlier upgrade that some of us may not have installed. I suspect our only hope rests with a bug fix by Apple.
So my issue went away when i purchased and tried a new card reader. However connecting camera still doesn’t work. Less of an issue as I prefer to only lug around card when possible vs. camera body. Would still be nice to be able to read right off my cameras tho
Sounds like your issue is something else entirely (unless when you said you purchased a new card reader, you were talking about an internal card reader, which I doubt, as that's not a repair most people are willing to attempt). The majority of the people partaking in this discussion are talking about specific computers (mostly 2010 Mac minis) internal SD card readers (i.e. the ones that are built into the computer itself) ceasing to work after upgrading to macOS High Sierra. We're not talking about hooking up cameras directly (which seems to be the problem you're addressing). As indicated previously, my SD card (and others' cards) work fine when using USB card readers, it's the internal card reader on select mac models that's giving us grief. That said, I have a couple suggestions that might help rectify your inability to hook your camera up directly. Many cameras offer more than than one method in which it can communicate with a computer. If you haven't done so already, check your camera manual and see if there's an alternative method in which in can communicate with your Mac. It might be as simple as choosing the right method. Also, nowadays certain model cameras when hooked up to Macs no longer show up in the finder the way they used to. However, despite not appearing on the desktop, when you open your Photos app, it might still detect the camera (despite the lack of a traditional icon on your desktop). So try that too. Hope those suggestions help.
Didn't know about Image Capture. Thanks so much to robogobo as my MacBook Pro doesn't let me transfer my photos from SD card anymore (did upgrade to High Sierra...). I hope Apple fix the issue soon. Image Capture will have to do for now, although not ideal.
Same problem here, with iMac 2015 ( 21" and 27") using the internal SD card reader. No icon on the desktop. If you rename the SD card with Disk Utility ( there is the SD card visible ) the icon appears on the desktop.
The SD card is again visible.
Update needed for High Sierra I guess, Apple.
