Safari won't load after High Sierra upgrade

Downloaded and installed High Sierra.

Everything seems to be working fine- including Chrome browser.

However, Safari will not open any webpages. App launches.

Attempt to load webpage and seems to freeze- progress bar does not move.

No error message.

Any thoughts on how to troubelshoot?

MacBook Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13), 13 inch

Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist and com.apple.appstore.plist. Move the .plists to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plists from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plists to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Jan 25, 2018 10:36 AM in response to Eric Root

I ended up finding a solution on another thread I thought I'd post.

I tried everything you and others here said. Tried resetting NAVRAM, safe boot etc etc.

The only thing that worked was running

OnyX 3.4.1 for macOS High Sierra 10.13

The recommendation was to run Onyx 3.8.8 but I couldn't find it. But now safari and app store are working again.

Thanks for your reply.

An earlier post, or maybe different thread on the topic, recommended getting rid of com.apple/safari.plist, so I tried that. But your method makes a lot more sense. Maybe I double-corrupted, as that is now trashed.

I need to run a back up....

Nonetheless I will try and look for the Appstore plist, and try your recommendation.

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is marked solved, less people are likely to look at it. A new post would be much more visible. You can link to this one.

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items. Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

If that doesn't work, try running this program in your normal account , then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running.
