iPhone calendar freezes in IOS 11

When adding an event in calendar, if you try to add a location, the screen locks up and you have to force close the app. I have done a complete reset and download of IOS 11 and still have the problem.

I have now found this exact problem on two Ipad Airs and Air 2, as well as my 6s IPhone. If you add an event to your calendar and then try to type in a location, the calendar will lock up and has to be forced closed to clear. For example, try typing in “test” as an event and then try to add a location by typing any letter in the “location” box. All my devices will immediately lock up the calendar at this point. This situation started with the latest IOS incremental update as far as I can determine.

Apple support suggested I reinstall the operating system, but that did not correct the problem.

Ok. So as I promised, i brought IT's from London to work on the IOS 11 problem.

We had over 8 iPhones X's, 8's and 7's, iPads and iPods.

Sim cards from different service providers, from different countries all on UNLOCK both GSM and CDMA devices.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

The Good is that we discover that 1 of the iPhones was a faulty device that would had the problem with Calendars (unless you disable Contacts, but also that iPhone X, would choke when in Setting>General>iPhone Storage, it would make a "stop and go" as you were scrolling down. We changed Sim Cards, Apple ID's, and all the same problem on 1 specific device. We emptied the phone and set it up as new, only with the apps it comes from factory. Same both problems, choking in scrolling and Calendar dead unless you deactivate the contacts. Changed the SIM cards, created a new Apple ID and that specific iPhone is a brick.

We worked on all the other more than 12 devices and after deleting apps, creating new ID's and trying basically all possibilities with apps that we considered that cause conflict of location, privacy, notifications etc we all came to the conclusion after having started to work at 10:30 AM with a dinner break at 7 for 2 hours and now being 2:00 AM the problem is in the Apple Cloud, specifically in Calendars conflicting with Contacts and Locations because it is not only searching in the device but ALL over the internet.

The interesting thing is that ONLY and ONLY when you dictate or talk to the IOS devices with IOS 11 and its updates, location in calendar works which makes us think that when the IOS 11 was design, all IOS being tactile, then therefore, there is a glitch very, very hidden and powerful that conflicts with both, the devices and the Cloud.

Having said that, we believe that as much as iCloud is not bad, the problem is not up there but all system 11 has be restart from scratch and meanwhile use TimePage form Moleskine (which by the way has a very beautiful UI and wait until in Cupertino they solve this big issue. Or use Siri, or "zz".

Don't migrate to Gmail or Outlook, one of the guys was working on this "solution and the setting up, the interface and everything that involves migrating doesn't pay.

Maybe Apple an buy Moleskine code and just integrated into the Cloud and into what i'm afraid will be IOS 12 if they continue to fight a problem that over 20 thousand people have been working for over a month and a half with no results.

So the Bad can be solved with a very simple and good solution and Apple would kill two birds with one stone. Making the X work and having once and for all a beautiful interface with no glitches and even maybe integrate Contacts to this Timepage Solution.

The Ugly, was to discover faulty products both in hardware as well akin software and that Apple is focusing in other things less important. There is no product in the stores and it was really a big mistake (we all concluded) not seeing in person the new iMac Pro, the delay of the HomePod and not admitting in public that they have a problem.

There is my description, findings and solutions. Hope someone in Apple will pay attention.

Thank you for your efforts and letting us know your progress with the issue. I already have the Google Calendar app on my iPhone X so I will use that to add locations on my appointments. I have also tried copying the full address from my contacts or the internet and pasting into the iPhone calendar location. Although annoying, that works to bypass the long delay. In my case it lasts minutes, not just seconds.

OMG

It’s nearly 2018 and still everyone’s still scrabbling around for a new ‘workaround’ for an issue that should not exist.

I already posted a ‘workaround’ that works with just a few touches on the screen. So there’s no need to be posting more highly risky alternatives.

What’s needed is fit everyone to keep the pressure on to the Apple developers to recognise and fix this problem.

So please just get on their case by phone or online and hopefully, they’ll move this issue up the list of priorities.

Dec 26, 2017 9:08 AM in response to RichardGHUK

Apple doesn’t work like that. They only use “feedback”.

The problem persists. Although the workarounds should embarrass Apple. Something that has never happen or would admit.

Sad to see the company in disarray. I know I am going to be admonished for this comment and even threatened to prevent me from communicating via this forum. Won’t be the first but yes maybe they will block me.

But I do know a lot of people that can write for me. So I guess in this time and age Tim should once and for all start acting like Jobs. Firing people and buying real companies like Adobe not Beats and Shazam .

It was some weeks since I posted this workraround but I’m not at all comfortable with it. This is because my contacts are high in number and frequently updated, particularly in respect of Notes when I visit them.

It’s a pain having to switch iCloud contacts sync back on to be sure that iCloud and my other devices, including MS Outlook are updated with the changes.; then back off again.

There’s no doubt in my mind that this is an issue that needs fixing by Apple. My previous posts and responses show that the workaround is what it is.

If your contacts remain largely static, then I can see why you are happier. I have 2572 Contacts for my business and I cannot run with this. I’m really hoping Apple will soon put me and many others out of our miseries.

As previously stated, the more people complain about this serious floor in arguably the most important IOS app, the higher priority it will become in the developers’ fix list.

Happy New Year🍾

Don’t get too exited. The problem is there.

For 4.99 download Timepage. This is the only work around.

Apple will not recognize any problem until a 17 year old kid exposes them about Apple cheating with batteries or other things.

Not the same company.

Incredible amount of mistakes and arrogance.

Don’t migrate to Outlook and or Gmail. More cumbersome and Timepage works fantastic and the UI is a pleasure.

Wish Apple had this kind of designers both in taste as well as in knowledge.

Let’s wait for IOS 13 or 15. Maybe then...

I’m not getting excited.

Just frustrated.

The problem with third party products is that one is forever reliant on them keeping up with changes necessitated by IOS updates.

From my perspective, a part of the £999 I paid for my iPhone X SHOULD cover the inclusion of a suite of flawless, reliable apps, developed by Apple and commensurate with the excellent build quality of the device.

Right now, the most important apps to me are the Calendar and Contacts.

The Calendar ‘freeze’ is causing me operational issues with my small business.

I’m going to keep pressing until a fix is released.

It’s not the £4.99 that deters me from your suggestion, it’s the PRINCIPAL and future developments that make this risky, in my view.

Dec 30, 2017 5:15 AM in response to RichardGHUK

Totally agree. The Calendar is an Apple product. It worked fine until the iOS 11 upgrades. I’ve been on the phone HOURS in October doing data uploads and error reports. I even bought a new IPhone in hopes of a solution. ( which may have been Apples strategy???). It’s HURTING my work. I’m tired of extra step work arounds. I may be returning my new phone. I’ve been an IPhone customer from the very first model. I own Apple stock. They are losing me as a fan

One thing is “should” and the other is “works”

Apple is making A LOT of wrong things.

It’s not the same company. When you have thousands of dollars in that eco system, you have to swallow the new “great stuff” they are doing and just go around the block.

4.99 is cheaper than hundred of thousand of dollars. The fix I’m sure they will come with a fix a soon as they bring Woz.

I spent over 15 hours with more than 12 IOS devices.

Only the X does it constantly. The iPad as well. Older model or the ones not running Whatsapp not so much.

Found TimePage and instead of cursing at the new policy of Apple if not caring, I rather spend my time working in productive things.

Apple is not the same company. Did any of ALL of you ever thought Apple was going to slow down batteries and be discover and exposed by a 17 year old kid.

Bravo for him.

I know I am going to get threaten and admonish by Apple but I insist.

BRING BACK WOZ!!!

It’s not £4.99 any longer, it would seem.

I think you’re information is a little out of date. Please don’t take this personally. I know things change rapidly in IT. I’ve been in the profession for more years than I am prepared to admit to 😁

Out of curiosity I’ve just peaked at their ‘offering’. I think the product screen shots show it’s full of flashy gimmicks and lacking in the simplicity/basic functionality that most users would want. e.g. I know what the weather’s doing without additional aids.

It seems it’s now a subscription only product and the last reviewer on their site is seriously annoyed that they’ve paid for a product and now find themselves forced into a subscription service.

It’s not for me!

I would add that one would need to be somewhat ‘optimistic’ to believe an online sync service would be free forever for a trivial one-off fee, so I’m not at all surprised at the change on charging structure.

Still counting on Apple to do the right thing.

My Calendar freeze is no longer an issue because I:

IMPORTANT: First backed up my Contacts and Calendar within my Outlook 2016 in case the following procedure erased them:

Created a Microsoft Account through my browser

Added the Microsoft Account in IOS

Added the Microsoft Account in my Outlook 2016

Copied my contacts and calendars to the MS Account

Switched all IOS sync options ON for the MS account

Tested changes made to Calendar and Contacts synced OK

Switched off iCloud sync in IOS for the iCloud account

Uninstalled iCloud from my PC

All working well!

Calendar, Contacts, Tasks all syncing reliably

Notes sync is also switched on for the Microsoft Account in IOS but we all know that Apple withdrew Notes Sync some time ago for reasons known to themselves, except to iCloud, annoying many customers.

Farewell iCloud sync

Hello Calendar without freeze on Location input

Jan 25, 2018 6:51 PM in response to Seerseer

Typing in ZZ is a good work around although not perfect. The device must be searching through all information to find whatever you are typing and that's why the app freezes. When you type in ZZ then it automatically starts at the end of the search and finishes quickly.

ZZ at least lets me complete the location line when putting the event in my calendar on my iphone X
