My machine is freezing in Finder multiple times daily, when I have my back-up disks plugged in via USB ports. I need to restart the machine when this happens. It occurred after I installed High Sierra.

I posted here before, after upgrading to High sierra, had frequent freezes, been to 'genius' bar several times, they wiped the disk and restored sierra, but machine still freezes.

Now a question: any one tried installing linux (with or without dual boot)? Hate to waste a seemingly good piece of hardware.

Yes, that is what I am experiencing. I never had a problem before High Sierra. Was starting to worry that I had a virus until reading everyone´s posts. Whenever my IMac goes to sleep, it freezes. I can close everything using the Force Quit but nothing works except a reboot. Who has time for that everytime you sit down to the computer. I teach online and am on and off the computer all day. This is getting old. It does not happen on my Mac Book Pro which is also running High Sierra. At one point I thought it might be Microsoft auto update but turned that off and the problem persists.

This just happened to me tonight too...TWICE in a row!! First time it has happened tho' on my new iMac Pro.

Funny thing is that I came home to find out my iMac had restarted for some reason...so it must have crashed and restarted when I had been away. Hmmm... I am really bummed especially because this is happening on my brand new shiny iMac Pro...

I am hesitant to insert further insanity into the Mac HD vs USB fray, but as I’m already confused with the high school-like Vikings 7 - Eagles 38 NFL score, here goes…

Although my boot drive with 2 “Containers” (partitions, MAC HD & Attic) updated to APFS rather quickly (15 minutes, I was impressed), after waiting 4 hours (frozen, no warning, wasted my time) and forcing a power off (button), it stated the external drive could not be formatted to APFS, so it remains Time Machine is still HFS+. Totally wiping the drive made no difference. Mac did not want to APFS format an external 2Tb USB3 drive.

Is my external drive messed up? It checks fine otherwise.

It’s plugged directly into the Mac, not a hub.

Does the Mac have a problem with mixed marriages such as APFS and HFS+ in the same home, even though the HFS+ is living above the garage?

It must be worse than that, even when evicted (USB disconnected), it still showed up. In my case, it is more pronounced in frequency and duration later in the day.

Temperatures are the same all day.

Is APFS clogging up with it's phantom (other volumes) shown in "Disk Utility"?

(hint, none of the betas worked either, so don't think being a developer is better)

Is this just older Macs? (At this point, you may insert your own speculation.)

I recently upgraded to High Sierra and am experiencing the same problem (freezing immediately after start up and having to reboot by pressing the power button). I searched for updates and am now running 10.13.2 but it froze again this morning. I had been wondering if my desktop hard drives were behind the issue?

However since they are not solid state (solid state doesn't provide enough storage space for film making) I assume that I should not try reformatting them to APFS and that they work better left as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? Reformatting would wipe the contents anyway.

Would unplugging all the hard drives, so that they are not present when the Mac boots, stop it freezing after start up? I had just one left one when I booted the Mac this morning (a USB device so a newer one) Or would the Mac still freeze occasionally when subsequently starting them up?

I have a Mac Pro (Late 2013) with a 3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5 Processor and 16 GB of memory

The desk top hard drives are Seagate and Lacie and are all Mac OS Extended (Journaled) running from either Firewire and USB.

My hard drives are all showing as being formatted as Extended Journaled (though I had read that if the Mac doesn't know what they are - that is what it calls them). I can't use SSDs as they don't provide enough storage for film. I hope Apple will address these issues as Macs need to work with hardware that film makers use. Its no good Apple deciding that external disc based storage is old hat if SSDs aren't able to provide enough storage.

After all of the updates to High Sierra my MacBook pro no longer freezes... it now crashes and reboots. Awesome.

They are less frequent (every few days vs every few hours), but now it just reboots. At least when it was hanging/freezing I could terminal in and close out apps etc.

I guess after this long we should no longer expect a fix from Apple. We're expected to just go out and buy a new MacBook.. how sad.

Hi again, despite all of the above (my reformatting external HDs etc), and 2 weeks of bliss with a functioning mac, the Finder freezes have started again - albeit less frequently. Vainly hoped that the 10.13.3 upgrade would help, but no. Am advising my colleagues to stay away from HS for a (long) while yet...

I thought it was fixed, but it was a ruse. The momentary system freezing "hiccups" (often up to 1 minute in duration) now occur later in the day and the "SiriNCService quit unexpectedly" errors after a few minutes of use (about 6 questions, then permanently "error claiming 'no audio' although it's fine.) At least I can get a few answers, now. Before it was 2.

In short the freezing and Siri problems appear deflected, not fix, which makes it more troublesome, thinking it was all fixed with the update. Restarting is no help, powering down all night delays the inevitable.

I'm back on this group, I've started to experience the short pauses after a lengthy uptime with 10.13.3. I'm also experiencing, what is likely a secondary issue, maybe unrelated, a reboot takes around 5 mins to complete as it seemingly pauses during disk mounting.

I tried the ultimate, a new 2nd user, with the omnipotent "root", no luck, but it did take a bit longer before it failed, too.

Tried all manners of reboots and reinstalls.

Safe boot (hold shift) freezes.

FYI: Did you know command-r allows you to create a APFS, but has no idea what it is?

I had to buy a new HD, to format it to HFS so command-r will recognize the HD and I can restore it from Time Machine.

But, Siri is still just as broken.

All new user.

Used "root".

New HD.

Fresh reinstall.

The new HD with macOS 10.13.3 Disk Utility knew what a APFS was and was able to fix the internal drive (Siri still not working). I'm staying with the larger 2Tb USB3, just as fast. Redirected Time Machine.

Still nothing.

Is there a way to erase and reinstall Siri as a stand alone app?

Must I eliminate everything I worked for in the past 15 years to create a whole new macOS with no ties to any of my files to make Siri talk? Is it worth it?

Is it part of the Apple obsolescence game? Watching it wither?

I don't have the cash.

Is this what m$ users feel like?

I never use Siri so have no idea whether or not it might still be working. I can report annoying issues with text edit. It won't allow more than a fixed number of pages - after that it won't let you scroll down. You have to change the format to wrap to page. Irritating for those of us who use it for html friendly writing prior to transferring this to websites.

I have read elsewhere on the forums that its not possible to downgrade fully, as the Mac won't uninstall all of High Sierra, so the problem will just re-occur.

There might be some method of wiping everything before doing a reinstall, but if so I'm not keen as I have already upgraded my other software, including FCP and converting my libraries to the upgraded FCP which is probably a one way journey.

But good luck and I hope it does resolve your problem. I've not had a freeze for a week now - don't know why not. Before it was about every three days.

I see I am very late to this discussion but I have been having the problem for a while. I would like to report it but don't understand what or where my console logs are! My computer freezes, including the mouse usually, when I am using word for mac and safari (that is the most common in fact). It seems to be happening more and more frequently, several times a day. The only thing I can do is switch off - no proper shut down as cursor won't move. Usually I get loads of recovered word files when I re-open but today the file I've been working on all afternoon re-set as if I'd done nothing! No auto recovery so presumably no auto-save. Grrrrr! I hope there is a fix that I have missed!
