About the macOS High Sierra 10.13.1 Update - Apple Support

Doesn't mention that it solves a problem where everything freezes though.

I updated to the High Sierra three days ago, and in addition to the Adobe CC package not working properly, my MacPro freezes several times a day, typically if it has been left unused for more than 10-15 minutes. I have tried to turn the screen saver on and off - no difference there.

If iTunes is running, the music plays on, so it's typically only the freezing screens, but there are no courses, neither mouse nor keyboard seems to work. The only option is to restart on the power button.

I have tried to reinstall High Sierra again, but it is the same problem.

It's really a big problem - and I hope Apple is working on a quick fix as it's impossible to work on such an unstable machine :-(

I suspect there's two different issues:

1. All Apple computers occasionally freeze with High Sierra - seems to be MacBook and iMac as far as I can tell. I'd love to see the system log at the time of the failure. Perhaps this is file system related?

2. Mac Pro suffers from screen freeze after a period of inactivity. -> log fills with com.apple.DumpGPURestart. This is a GPU driver issue - I'd bet on it.

My Mac Pro runs all day without issue (other than slow iCloud updates, spinny-beachball, etc.) but when left for a few hours without activity, the screen freezes and the log fills with com.apple.DumpGPURestart. The machine is still accessible via SSH and can be safely shutdown, though not powered off.

Eureka! I now have my iMac back, thanks to Apple Support and others. My iMac is a late 2013 running 10.13 with 8MB of RAM. It froze regularly when I used more than one app but we could find no other clue to the issue. Eventually after a full OS update and running only Apple apps we traced a problem whereby the system seemed to be trying to run a backup on Time Machine but this was freezing after about 5 minutes and by then the whole system had to be shut down via the wall socket. We had noticed spikes in the kernel and at times memory running near to maxed out. I changed the external WD hard drive for another, known to be working and tried again. Success! A full backup of the 147 GB was done in about an hour and my system is now back to normal. I have not yet added memory (still can do it with my iMac) but will monitor things.

Click on the link at the end of the post (copied here again (bugreport.apple.com)) and fill in the report with the info you have/collected and attach your latest System Report's log from — use Console (Utilities).

Also happened to me after upgraded to Sierra on my MacBook Pro 15" Retina mid-2014 with discrete graphics.

I even did a clean install of macOS and the issues came back up after a while. For me it seems related to the way macOS handles the GPU because it mostly happens to me while I'm using with an external display attached or while the Mac is using discrete graphics.

I downgraded back to Sierra and don't have the issue anymore. So, that's that.

Edit: I also have a late-2012 MacBook Pro 13" Retina and High Sierra runs flawlessly.

You know, guys, what I find really odd? That with all that is going on about this freeze/crash problem, in this "official" blog here, and also in many other forums, Apple has so far not given a single statement or acknowledgement of the problem. Or have I missed something? With something so crucial happening normally they would at least say:"hang on, we know about it and work on it". But even the guy at the German phone support which I called Monday had not heard about it - or so he said... What is going on?

My is also nVidia: Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M

... and this is true that problem usually (as far as I remember) happens when there is need for GPU, possibly it switches to more powerful one.

I turn off switching (what means use of NVIDIA always) and I will see whenever problem will appear.

Would be fine to collect the "success" stories, aka what did the trick for someone.

For me, since i changed from a 4K to a 1680 x 1050 display i had only one freeze. Thats it for two weeks now.

I also disabled automated Time Machine Backups and avoid using Chrome.

MBP 2012 Retina

My wife's MacBook Retina (12") Early 2016 has had no problem whatsoever, life as smooth as ever. It's definitely hardware related, but which model range is the question. Looks like they did not include proper support for models earlier than 2016. The problems show up everywhere. When I wake my machine after a while, long enough for automatic screen lock, just after I press any key to wake it up (or to light up the display), you're expected to see the lock screen authentication dialog. Instead I see a glimpse of the last desktop view (well under a second) and only then the lock screen. This is a privacy issue. Also, when I boot the machine and log on, as windows from last session pop up, parts of the screen flicker black and white (I think). Not a hundred percent sure, but I'd swear this only happens on exposed portions of Safari windows. When things got really bad, like more than one freeze a day, I reinstalled the system over itself, needless to say it changed nothing. As of yesterday night just before class, I no longer have Safari open (read previous phrase above) and transferred all my open bookmarks/sites to Chrome. So far so good, but I shouldn't even speak that or else the thing decides to tell me otherwise :-(

Please try not to divert the discussion. This is not an isolated problem, This is a generalized issue with the graphics card and the high Sierra. Take a minute an read the previous posts. You can start a different discussion if you have an isolated problem with safari etc...

What you are doing is really demoting the problem...

Download Onyx for High Sierra, go to Maintenance tab, then go to the Rebuild tab.

be aware that Onyx has enough functionality to ruin your OS, so use it wisely

I did SSH reboot and here is what happened after attempting several times to open and close the clamshell while connected to the 5K LG (max resolution in both screens).

Also started to experience system hangs, crashes and graphics glitches since upgrading to High Sierra my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014). Before the upgrade I didn't have any issues at all. System hangs occur 6-7 times a day, so this is a total productivity killer.

In addition, the system occasionally loses connection to the two external 4k monitors (1-2 times a day). Disconnecting and reconnecting cables will not help, only system restart helps. I'm running scaled resolutions on all three screens.

😀 That is Identical system, identical configuration and identical symptoms as I had. I tried all the tricks people suggested in this thread and nothing helped. The only thing that helped was downgrade to 10.12 (Sierra) and my system has been stable since.

For everyone who believes their gpu problems have been solved, try opening Photos and cropping an image

There's another thread full of ppl who do not know this is a gpu issue
